Inspired by the "excuses" thread..

All these posts saying "just use a credit card" "it'll be hard but you'll get through it"

NO!!

It fucking won't.

If you want people to be able to self isolate here is what you do....

*if you are a LL let your tenants have a rent break....otherwise you are a hypocrite

*Lobby the government for these changes...
*force energy companies to allow payment for key meters online/give customers a break from payment
*force LL to allow rent breaks
*force companies to pay full pay for self isolation

Otherwise all your handwringing is fucking pointless.

We, like I suspect millions of people, cannot afford to self isolate, due to circumstances we have no savings, no access to credit, and 2 weeks ssp will make us homeless because our LL literally couldn't give a shit (I know there are Good LL- never met one though!)

We have key meters and can't top up online.

It's all very well and good being all fucking smug and saying we should have been prepared....how???

We are stuck in a cycle of private rent and debt and general shit and barely make it every month....as I think loads of people are but don't want to admit it...

Seriously....start shouting at your MPs.....please think of those who are too terrified to self isolate because the whole family will be out on the street.

Where when the shit hits the fan, our system means there is no support (ssp is a joke amount for those paying a fortune in rent)

Ironically, the very poorest will be less affected than those who are just above the level where universal credit is no longer payable.

People already getting UC to help with their rent will get more UC in their next payment if they have to go onto SSP or self-isolate without pay, but people having to claim UC for the first time will be lucky to see any money inside 5 weeks, and possibly even longer if they don't manage to sort out something about the verification appointments.

But anyone who thinks their pay may drop for any reason would be well advised to make a claim for UC asap.

As long as we don’t go into recession again

^well that boat has sailed.

A functioning economy needs workers and economic collapse causes greatest hardship to the poorest in society.

ChrissieKeller61 · 13/03/2020 14:21

@Tulipstulips which tbf is correct but I thought we judged society by how it treats it weakest members

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 13/03/2020 14:22

Sadly Tulip I think you are right.....but I didn't want to make this political.....just about the wide gulf between what some people can do, and what others literally can't

On the excuses thread, some one literally said if your LL is that shit you should just let them evict you....like
A) eviction isn't a horribly traumatic thing
B) social housing isn't already non existent in loads of areas
C) they'd all be happy living in a one room b&b for months
D) why the fuck should this even be a thing???.....would they be happy to lose their home because the Government refuse to budget for this??

OP posts:
PersephoneandHades · 13/03/2020 14:24

People who are angry at LL are completely misdirecting their anger.

My parents owned a property that they rented out, it paid for the mortgage on our home and it paid for our food and electricity when my dad was made redundant. Once my bed broke and we didn't have the money to replace it for two months so I slept on the floor. But yes, my parents were truly awful people who revelled in stealing from all you poor tenants.

If your are unhappy with the system then you need to lobby the people who ACTUALLY have a choice and the power to change things. Don't get angry at people who are just trying to live their lives and happened to have more luck than you. If you were the one who had had the luck you would be a LL right now, don't lie.

This isn't directed at the OP.

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 13/03/2020 14:29

Oh and @AwdBovril
Sorry I missed your post.

I'm so sorry you were evicted.....we were there a couple of years ago and both me and DS have PTSD and anxiety now....

It was fucking awful and people don't understand that being forced to lose your home through no fault of your own can be terribly terribly shit. Flowers

If LLs can work with tenants then they should, after all it’s in their best interests however, I think there may be a lot of LLs who don’t have sufficient insurances, back up so I think the horse has already bolted

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 13/03/2020 14:32

I get it Persophone I really do....

But as you have kindly demonstrated...it's not LL in general, but both the Government who won't help either tenants or LL in this situation, and the LL who won't make even a little concession.

OP posts:
Tulipstulips · 13/03/2020 14:34

@ChrissieKeller61 yes. Probably it will be better to take his viewpoint, in the long run, for the majority of the UK population. It’s not something I could decide to do, but then I’m a dyed-in-the-wool, red or dead, lifelong Labour-voter.

nicknamehelp · 13/03/2020 14:34

Why as a LL am I being a hypocrite if I dont give my tenants a rent break??? Who is giving me a break?

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 13/03/2020 14:35

Also there are LL who, sadly, will gleefully take a mortgage break, while still expecting full rent, can we not do something about this??

OP posts:
AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 13/03/2020 14:35

nickname please read all my posts....I have explained what I mean over and over

OP posts:
Tulipstulips · 13/03/2020 14:36

Not that I’m saying a Labour government would take a different path, to be honest. Just that I’m a liberal who doesn’t believe people who are disabled or young or poor are of less worth.

Oysterbabe · 13/03/2020 14:36

It isn't your LL's fault that you are poor. They aren't a charity that owe you free housing. You should be the one lobbying the government for money to cover your rent. It isn't your LL's responsibility.

Shinygoldbauble · 13/03/2020 14:39

To all the people saying where would renters be if no one rented out their house - do you understand that people owning multiple properties increases demand for housing and pushes property prices up therefor pricing many buyers out of the market? Also in the absence of large n numbers of buy-to-letters there would be more properties available for councils to buy for social housing.
But it is a capitalist society. There is nothing to stop those who can afford it buying up multiple properties.

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 13/03/2020 14:42

Oyster ffs read all my posts....I'm arguing for support for all LLs and tenants.

Jesus does no one read anymore.

OP posts:
womaninatightspot · 13/03/2020 14:42

I have to say I find all this landlord hatred strange. I was born in a city and privately rented various flats throughout my twenties. It was fine, there's absolutely a need for private properties to be rented unless everyone has to live with their parents till they can buy something?

AnIdiotNeedsHelp · 13/03/2020 14:44

do you understand that people owning multiple properties increases demand for housing and pushes property prices up therefor pricing many buyers out of the market? Also this is a Good point......like I said....this is exposing all of he flaws in our systems.

OP posts:
DowntownAbby · 13/03/2020 14:44

Why do you think landlords should stand you not paying their bill but others should be paid?

What about supermarkets?

Surely they have a backup plan for if you just decide not to pay for your shopping?

Or the energy company? Just don't bother paying your electric bill - it's their tough shit if they don't have a plan to cover that.

It's all someone else's problem, isn't it.

Sickoffamilydrama · 13/03/2020 14:51

Businesses can not afford to pay start that aren't producing, I run an SME manufacturing company employing 80 odd, in order to get money in we need product going out. If we had everyone off and then paid them, we'd probably run out of cash in less than a month then no one would have a job.

I would love to be able to provide everyone with sick pay but ensuring long term employment for as many employees as possible has to take priority.

LizzieSiddal · 13/03/2020 15:39

Why as a LL am I being a hypocrite if I dont give my tenants a rent break??? Who is giving me a break?

Your mortgage provider will give you a break! And you should know this as a LL. Someone said upthread that LL aren't stupid. Well reading this thread I beg to differ.

ChrissieKeller61 · 13/03/2020 15:43

A mortgage break just means extra interest charges though, which compounds. People do not understand how finance works clearly

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 13/03/2020 15:49

The interest rate has been cut, and there is talk of mortgage holidays. There should be legislation to force LL to pass these benefits on to tenants - i.e. if they don't have to pay their mortgage, the tenant doesn't have to pay the rest. In other countries I've lived in any interest rate cuts have to be passed on in lower rents.

And people who are self isolating should have their costs picked up by the government (the government should force employers to keep paying them - and if it will pose a real risk to business government steps in - if employer is Amazon or Google or many other large companies they can suck it up as they've avoided paying their taxes for years - I also suspect Amazon is going to do very well from COVID what with lots of people stuck at home).

ChrissieKeller61 · 13/03/2020 15:58

I’m on a two year fixed, nothing changes for me

userxx · 13/03/2020 16:03

The interest rate has been cut

Great news for people with tracker mortgages. Fixed rate mortgages not so much.
