UK holiday in July - not sure whether to pay the balance or cut my losses?

We’re booked to go to Butlins the first week of the summer holidays. Only paid a deposit at the minute and the balance is due in about 6 weeks. At the minute, the very last place I want to be is in the middle of a crowd of people; it would be different if it was a cottage holiday somewhere quieter. I can’t decide whether to pay the balance and hope the situation improves by then, or to assume it won’t have and lose my deposit.

Also booked to go to the Netherlands at the end of August, but that’s a cheap Sun holiday and not paid for the ferry yet, so not worrying too much about that.

Just to add, I’m asthmatic and have an elderly parent with COPD so trying not to take any unnecessary risks.

What’s the general consensus on holidays over the summer? I know nobody has a crystal ball, so we don’t know what will happen, but would prefer to use the £250 balance on a different holiday rather than pay out and lose the lot.

This is a long game, but worst should be over in 3 months. The virus will definitely still be around over summer and probably circulate until we have a vaccine, maybe in a year.

There’s no easy answer to your questions and depends how you view loss of £250. If you’ve had corona yourself by summer and recovered then you’ll be immune. I think it’s too early to make a call on it.

Thanks. I’m definitely leaving it right until the last minute to decide whether or not to pay. £250 is a lot of money for me to lose. I know it’s gone whether or not we go on the holiday, but if I pay and then we don’t go, I’m not going to be able to afford to book anything else in it’s place.
