So yesterday I had a phone call to say my brother is seriously ill in hospital (not coronavirus) and for me to go up as soon as possible. I spent 7 hours at the hospital.
My sister who works at a different hospital then had a message saying the hospital I was currently visiting had a full ward above us full of suspected cases!
I have woken up this morning with a runny nose, cough and a aching head! My head feels all fuzzy and my eyes are all puffy.
I work in a nursing home and I am due to be back for 4 nights starting tomorrow.
I'm looking for some advice on what I should do. I'm only young and this has really panicked me as these symptoms have come up less than 24 hours afterShock

Well I doubt you'll have caught it yesterday as that would be quite a quick incubation period. I think it's generally a few days?

But the advice of quite clear, and you do have a new cough, so following the new guidelines you should self isolate for 7 days.

Rhubarbpeony · 13/03/2020 06:08

Have you taken your temperature? Fever and a dry, recurrent cough are the headline CV symptoms, so if you don’t have those it’s more likely a cold. I understand if you want to play it safe, so you may still have a decision to make, but if you don’t have a fever I think it is more likely a cold. Might be worth speaking to your work though and getting their view on what you should do.

Coffeeaddict201 · 13/03/2020 06:09

I work in a hospital with 15 cases and none of the staff have caught it... your panicking over nothing. You probably have caught a cold.

Fatted · 13/03/2020 06:12

The incubation period is approx 14 days, so you can't have caught it if you were only at the hospital yesterday.

JustVisiting9 · 13/03/2020 06:12

Hi,

This is an awful situation and you have my sympathies.

But you must follow the government instructions and stay at home as you have a cough. I know this will be difficult but you need to tell the care home that you cannot go to work.

You may or may not have Coronavirus, but I if you do, I think it's unlikely you contracted it yesterday because it takes a few days for symptoms to develop.

You should let the hospital that you visited yesterday and now have these symptoms so that they can consider any possible impact on people you came into contact with.

Winifredgoose · 13/03/2020 06:13

The guidelines are that you should stay at home for 7 days. You shouldn't call 111 unless you think you cannot look after yourself at home. They are no longer testing mild cases.
You probably dont have corona virus, but these are the guidelines.

Cherrysherbet · 13/03/2020 06:14

You must self isolate for 7 days re the official govt guidelines.

@meredithgrey1 - I know that's what I thought it's usually a few days I felt like I had a cold last week but it went so didn't think much else of it
@Rhubarbpeony I don't feel warm at all if anything the opposite feel so cold!
@Coffeeaddict201 - I know I'm probably just panicking over nothing it's just so hard with the full country panicking and all these things in the news
@Fatted- I felt like I had a cold last week but it went pretty quickly
@JustVisiting9 - I know I need to tell them. I've just went into a state of panic as I woke up at 4am as I couldn't breathe properly through my nose. It's highly unlikely I have it. In all honestly I don't really care about me it's my residents welfare I'm concerned about
@Winifredgoose @Cherrysherbet - thank you for the advice! There is just so much going on that it's all very confusing. The full country has just went into a state of panic

It's not my welfare I'm concerned for it's my residents. Every resident is end of life/palliative care so are the most vulnerable and I would never forgive myself if I gave them anything as the likelihood would be that they wouldn't make it

coved-19 aside, if you have

runny nose, cough and a aching head! My head feels all fuzzy and my eyes are all puffy.

then you ought not go into work at the nursing home, as you could pass on a flu type virus to extremely vulnerable residents, some of whom have serious lung diseases and would be put at serious health risk as they can't fight off chest infections or viruses that affect their breathing or put a strain on their heart,

If you think it is worse than an everyday cold, i think you should call your manager to ask.

Sparticuscaticus · 13/03/2020 06:25

Ah ... cross posted.

Butterwhy · 13/03/2020 06:26

It's likely a cold, follow guidance anyway and isolate I would, especially due to where you work, it's not worth it risk. Hope you're feeling better soon.

fantaa1 · 13/03/2020 06:29

@Sparticuscaticus - yeah I think I will call them today and explain as a cold can be deadly due to how vulnerable these residents are
@Butterwhy thank you!Smile that's what I was thinking it's just not worth the risk even the though the chances are extremely small
I had the swine flu when that came about when I was younger and was admitted to hospital with it so I guess that's making me panic more
