Devastated they’ve shut Disneyworld

We have a holiday booked for 23rd May and have to pay the full balance at the end of March. Flights BA so separate and probably non-refundable. Totally don’t know what to do. Will have a very disappointed 3 and 7 year old. I know I will get people telling me to get a grip because of the wider situation but that doesn’t change how I’m feeling right now.

Do I cut my losses and cancel (but situation may be improved and we have missed out on our long planned holiday) or do we sit it out and wait?

Things could be different by then but I would probably cancel what you can for now. If things get worse you will cut your losses. If things get better could be some great last minute deals.

I know the feeling as we booked our Vegas wedding and then sept 11th happened and all flights cancelled.

BathshebasBane · 13/03/2020 03:58

Do you have to pay the full balance regardless?

Hippopotas · 13/03/2020 03:59

Things may change by then. Just think yourself lucky that unlike my family you weren’t due to go next week :(

Incontinencesucks · 13/03/2020 04:01

If they've closed what have they said about refunds? Yanbu to feel disappointed, no one wants a cancelled holiday.

thegreenlight · 13/03/2020 04:04

I’m so so sorry for people who are due to go sooner. We haven’t paid the balance yet, due to end of March but flights were £3000 and booked directly so won’t get that back. I’m sure Disney will refund, their customer service is amazing, just not sure how I feel about hanging on.

And you can’t really do last minute deals for Disney - we are staying in Animal Kingdom Lodge and have all our dining booked. 10 days away from booking fast passes. I have horrific anxiety about booking things in advance but was getting over it (went to Disneyworld last year and all was smooth sailing) feel like I’ve gone backwards now and will be loath to book in advance again.

I'm so sorry for you. We went on 9th April last year and I'd just be gutted if we were going this year and hearing the news. It's such a 'big' holiday that (most people) have to save up hard for.

Peridot1 · 13/03/2020 04:15

I would hold off on cancelling your flights yet. We have a similar situation with a trip planned to go to Chicago in two weeks. BA seem to be one of the only airlines who are not letting people change their flights with no charge. Even EasyJet are doing now. I think there will be a big back lash against BA and they might have to start letting people change their flights. If not we certainly will never use them again.

Winterlife · 13/03/2020 04:18

Coronavirus is expected to peak around Easter. Disney world currently is only closed until March. So I wouldn’t cancel yet.

thegreenlight · 13/03/2020 04:24

I think it’s just even more stressful because we still have the balance to pay so have to make that choice. God, my boys are going to be devastated. We have bugged this up so much as we are so excited about going back again.

Thankyou for those replying at stupid o’clock. My husband isn’t interested so sat here alone feeling rubbish.

I’m I. Canada and it’s 10:37 here.

Disneyworld will credit or refund you. Ask them what your options are if they’re not open, or the virus is raging.

I believe by May 23, the worst will have passed.

StoppinBy · 13/03/2020 04:46

If you wont be getting a refund on most of it anyway I would hold off until the last minute.

While it makes sense to close it I can totally understand how upset you would be, if we ever make it there it would be something we could only afford to do once and it would also be crushing for me to have to cancel.

Iamtooknackeredtorun · 13/03/2020 04:47

It’s closed until the end of the month. You’re being asked to pay for a holiday at the end of May. If you pay it and then they close again then wdw will refund I’m sure. I appreciate the disappointment factor of course but I’m pretty sure by then (especially give the California sunshine) the peak will be flattened a bit.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 13/03/2020 04:48

Also in Canada. I’m seeing reports that it’s not a refund but the opportunity to rebook before Dec 20.

thegreenlight · 13/03/2020 04:57

Being a teacher I’m super limited in when I can go - add free Disney dining (we treated ourselves to a deluxe dining upgrade but the free dining deal took a large whack off) Which is limited and I’m worried about rebooking. Thankyou for all the support, it’s really been helpful and great to have some positive and hopeful reactions, I was expecting a unanimous call to cancel. I think I will call Disney in a couple of days (to let things calm down) and see where we stand.

MaggieAndHopey · 13/03/2020 05:25

I agree with a PP that if you can't get the flights refunded anyway even now, why not hold off - presumably Disney will refund you your payment if they remain shut over your booking and it sounds like there's a chance they'll be open again by then.

I don't think anyone would slate you for being worried and disappointed. I hope you do get to go.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/03/2020 05:27

They’ve got to give you the same ts&cs for a rebooking, surely?

sam221 · 13/03/2020 05:31

Claim on your insurance, if possible and I can appreciate you will some very disappointed children. Maybe hold off till you completely cancel, the situation seems to be constantly changing.

blindmusicmum · 13/03/2020 05:35

Personally, I would wait it out. Things may change.

Cherrysherbet · 13/03/2020 05:53

Oh that’s a shame op. I really feel for you 💐

LEELULUMPKIN · 13/03/2020 05:59

Have you paid any part of it on a credit card OP?

If so you may be able to get a refund from them.

It’s certainly worth checking out and then depending on their answer You will be able to make a more informed decision.

I definitely wouldn’t cancel yet. We are in uncharted territory here and the situation is shifting so rapidly.

There is a heck of a long way to go yet.

Good luck!

LEELULUMPKIN · 13/03/2020 06:06

I forgot to say what rotten luck and I can empathise totally.

DH and I are due to fly out for a once in a life time bucket list holiday to The Maldives in 13 days for my 50th birthday and the waiting is agony.

It’s the not knowing, which means you can’t even allow yourself the pleasure of the exciting build up, which for us is a huge part of it.

It sucks!

Flibbitygibbit · 13/03/2020 06:16

OP, their website says a month from tomorrow, so 🙏 You could be ok. Saying this you could do a last minute holiday in Florida (been there a lot) but you may have to go elsewhere to stay , ( we stay in Davenport) . I've been looking at Its Orlando time on Facebook and am truly gutted for those meant to be going in the next few weeks. Bad times ☹️ Hope you can rearrange
