Surely if they want herd immunity to kick in then no one should be washing hands?

How much does washing hands actually protect you?

Yes but people will either recover and get immune, or they will die. Hmm And the idea is to stop 1000's of people dying.

Not to mention the NHS is in no way prepared for 1000's of extra ill people. It can barely cope with winter. Especially when they are likely to have thousands of staff off with coronavirus themselves, or self-isolating as a precaution, or having to stay home to look after kids if there are school closures.

Handwashing is the best way we have of keeping hands clean and preventing passing on infections.

They want herd immunity but to get there slowly. So that those who do fall ill don’t all arrive in hospital at the same time. Washing hands, staying in isolation if you have symptoms, all will help to try and keep the infections manageable.
