Would you still let your kids do extracurricular activities?

Would you let your kids go to extracurricular activities indoors in view of this week’s developments? Like, dance classes, gym classes, etc? DP and I are currently having a heated discussion as to whether this is an avoidable risk and we should stop attending for the time being, or a pointless step if we are still sending DC to school...

Yeah I would until the club's cancel

MillyMollyMooMum · 12/03/2020 21:28

I am still happy for DD to go to ballet as it's no different to going to school, but can't decide on swimming.

JoyceByersWasRight · 12/03/2020 21:29

I think that they are in school, using public transport etc anyway so what would be the point? Different if it gets to the stage when they deem it is necessary to close schools. I think I'd stop then.

alliejay81 · 12/03/2020 21:35

Yes definitely. Children only get mild cases (no fatalities under age 10 worldwide - I think?). DS is fit and healthy as are DH and I. If we were in close contact with anyone at higher risk I'd rethink.

I will however be keeping a very close eye on any symptoms and we have been practising good hand washing technique!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/03/2020 21:38

I've noticed that swimming seems a lot quieter... There was 4 in one DDs class, 5 in the other. Usually at least 8.
Cubs attendance was at normal levels on Tuesday.

Mine are still attending. If cases increase locally, we may reconsider. But there's 2 in our county currently. None in our town.

BeardedMum · 12/03/2020 21:40

Nope. They only go to things they have to go like school

Notlong20 · 12/03/2020 21:48

Yes. Mine have been both swimming and dancing tonight.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 12/03/2020 21:51

whilst they are still at school yes they will go to activities. I am not sure how I would feel about swimming though if they did it - I think that is one I would probably avoid. logic would say chlorine should kill germs but I don't think I would want to risk it. low contact, small extra curricular activities I think are ok at the moment

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/03/2020 21:53

Optimistically writing birthday party invitations for the end of the month currently. Have a feeling it won't happen. Maybe a joint party with her sister in June....

ColaFreezePop · 12/03/2020 21:54

With swimming the risk is around the pool and the changing area not the actual pool water.

One advantage of WFH you hear experts in public health explain everything.

APurpleSquirrel · 12/03/2020 21:59

Both DC are still attending clubs including swimming. Until schools close or clubs close we'll probably keep going.
Yesterday there was only two cases of Covid 19 in our county, todays the figures say only one? So at the moment the risk is minimal for us.

GaraMedouar · 13/03/2020 07:34

Yes DD does all activities still. Our county has 0 cases at the moment.

silverdollarcity · 13/03/2020 07:35

Yes, DD did karate last night and the instructor made everyone wash their hands before the class started.

Babyfairy0923 · 13/03/2020 07:37

Nope! And in a week or 2 I’m guessing they’ll be a hell of a lot more no’s!!

funmummy48 · 13/03/2020 07:37

Yes, business as usual until further notice.

CarolineIngalls · 13/03/2020 07:40

I am attempting to stop rugby one game or practice at a time.

Rugby is the opposite of social distancing and most every week someone ends up at a and e. Surely we shouldn't bother the nhs with stupid boy sport.

Teen boys not on board with social distancing.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/03/2020 07:41

Yes. DS does Beavers and swimming and he's going as usual. Beavers have stepped up hygiene practices.

megletthesecond · 13/03/2020 07:42

I'm not sure about DS's karate. I don't think the teachers are making them keep their distance. They could practice katas, do punch bags and walking techniques but they're still doing close contact.
I might keep him off next week.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 13/03/2020 07:44

DS is still going dancing but we've had an email from the dance school asking that children wash their hands as soon as they arrive and before they leave. Seems sensible. It's his only extra curricular activity though. If schools close I will re think.

At the moment I'm still having to go to work in an open plan building with 2000 people So that's a higher risk than his one dance class a week with 15 other kids I reckon

idontlike789 · 13/03/2020 07:48

Yes unless it's cancelled carry it on .
We are in the delay stage so if ill stay home . We can't stop the virus just delay spread so carry on with life as this will probably go on for months .

Waxonwaxoff0 · 13/03/2020 15:08

DS's Beaver leader just messaged to say sessions are cancelled until after Easter.

halcyondays · 13/03/2020 15:12

At the moment yes, but think they’ll soon be stopped anyway.

TwoKidsStillStanding · 13/03/2020 18:41

Thanks all - think DC is off to gym class tomorrow but suspect it will be the last one for a while.

Our swimming school has said they're continuing for now with extra hand washing before & after.
Didn't get told anything at gymnastics yesterday so carrying on as usual for now.
