Freezer shopping list
kingcharlesbaby · 12/03/2020 19:10
Forgive me if this has been done, I’m asking for suggestions for a freezer shopping list please?
Frownette · 12/03/2020 19:16
What size is your freezer?
Bread, vegetables, whatever sort of protein you normally eat meat/fish/vegetarian, ready meals, butter (if you eat that), home cooked favourite meal for if you can't get the ingredients.
Ice cream and pudding!
Goawayquickly · 12/03/2020 19:16
Depends on what you like to eat and cook really, are you vegetarian?
I like to keep a little stash of bread products like crumpets and muffins as they’re always useful. I also normally have sausages, fish, chicken, pizzas, a bag of chips, ice cream, frozen peas, sweetcorn.

Wow, thank you, I didn’t realise you could freeze eggs or butter, actually I’ll do my usual shop and see what I can freeze and just get what we would normally eat. Plus lots of bread as that freezes quite nicely.
I don’t have a freezer - just a tiny ice compartment one so I thought I’d order a new tall one and stock up.
Thank you
Frownette · 12/03/2020 19:38
It's quite fun doing imaginary food shopping for the freezer
Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/03/2020 19:43
I always have in mine:
Mixed veg / sliced mushrooms / Peas
Spinach (love these they are in portioned quantities add straight to anything you are cooking)
Veggie protein - sausages, burgers etc
Mixed fruit
Smoothie packs
Chopped banana
Leftovers- i always make a massive pan of soup and freeze portions for work
Cooked rice freezes well
In ice cube trays leftover wine (it does exist!!) to add when cooking
When i soak dried mushrooms i strain & freeze the soaking liquid, use as stock
I freeze all kinds
Between my freezer stuff & storecupboard bits i can rustle up all kinds can go weeks without shopping (only me at home). And often do due to money issues.
Oh and i never, ever pay full price for bread products. Go straight to the reduced section & throw it straight in freezer & just use as and when.
Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/03/2020 19:47
I love thinking what meals i can come up with! Some of my best creations have been when i have about three things left in the house 😂.
Always have a selection of dried herbs & spices & cooking oil to hand & the world of meals out of freezer bits is your oyster!
WhereverIMayRoam · 12/03/2020 19:55
Ours is stocked with things like homemade soup, veg curries, bean and veg chili, veggie lasagne (obviously you can do meat versions we just don’t eat meat). We also have convenient, no effort stuff like frozen fish, fish cakes, quorn mince, potato waffles, oven chips and pizza.
As you’ve posted in the Coronavirus section I assume you’re looking at stocking up in case you’re ill or at least self isolating? If so then I’d suggest making some veg heavy meals for the freezer because if you’re stuck inside it might be harder to get fresh. Not that anyone’s going to get scurvy in the space of 2 weeks of course .
kingcharlesbaby · 12/03/2020 20:10
Yes thank you @whereverimayroam I’m just thinking if the schools get closed and we get put on lockdown. I lost my father recently so I suppose I’m feeling more cautious.
WitchenKitch · 12/03/2020 20:25
Great ideas above. I've stocked up on popsicles, when multipacks are on special, just in case someone here gets a fever. They're soothing, hydrating, and deliver a little energy to someone who is finding it hard to eat.
sewingsinger · 12/03/2020 20:29
I'm not convinced re loaves of bread - they take a lot of room in the freezer and bread is easy to make with strong flour and yeast or buy part bakes that often have quite long dates. Wraps are worth freezing as they don't take much space. If you are prioritising the fruit, veg and meat.
Squash stuff down to make it easy to freeze e.g. take mince out of plastic container and put in freezer bag and squash flat, it can then be stacked like a row of books.
Wavescrashingonthebeach · 12/03/2020 20:35
@sewingsinger
Wraps are a bugger though as if u want to defrost one you have to often defrost the whole pack, as trying to remove one often makes it snap!
Do agree on the big loaves thing, if you have a massive freezer then no prob.
Mine is only small so the winners are those mini loaves & also potato cakes. Because POTATO CAKES! And easy to remove what you need.
BitchHazel · 12/03/2020 20:44
You can put a sheet of kitchen roll or baking paper between wraps before freezing them.
Asmuchuseas · 12/03/2020 20:46
I've a big chest freezer and it's been topped up with reduced bread, pizzas, chips, herbs, veggies and meat
Oxo01 · 12/03/2020 21:20
I've got a spare small chest freezer 99ltrs I have bought a few extra different bits to go in that but I will give to my daughter if she runs out or can't get some bits as there are 5 of them unlike 2 sometimes 3 of us at home.
Always take things out of packets to make more room.
mnthrowaway202020 · 12/03/2020 21:22
This is such a useful thread! I eat out a lot/order in and only buy groceries for about a week at a time, so this is definitely helping me prep.
Beesisabuzzin · 12/03/2020 21:27
Don't freeze bread unless you've got a massive freezer. You can buy part baked rolls and baguettes which have a really long shelf life, or make your own.
If you make double portions of your normal meals you can freeze the leftovers.then fill the rest with veg, berries, bacon, mince, chips. Anything you would normally eat just get a bit extra.
RozHuntleysStump · 12/03/2020 21:27
I keep lots of lovely fish cakes in my freezer. An easy meal with frozen peas and chips. I often don’t bother with chips though. Just try and think about what meals you might make. I often have home made food in there too but none at present. Soup ingredients is another good idea.
Beesisabuzzin · 12/03/2020 21:33
Cheese freezes well too. I always have some mozzarella in there for when we fancy pizza. The Jamie Oliver pizza base recipe is excellent.
Oxo01 · 12/03/2020 21:37
@ 26sleepismysuperpower1
that tip about freezing eggs is great !!
I read that you could freeze cheese and have just put 2 large chunks in freezer but your tip about that now makes me think I should take them out as I do t be cooking with it just eating it in sandwiches, HELP should I take them out and store in fridge instead ?
sleepismysuperpower1 · 14/03/2020 17:50
it depends really, i think it is fine for a few weeks (2ish) in the freezer (again, i think!) but i wouldn't leave it in the freezer longer than that if its just for sandwiches. @Oxo01
sleepismysuperpower1 · 14/03/2020 21:47
by the way, if anyone is looking for hand sanitizer ( i know people are struggling to get some), there is some available on german amazon, here for around £2.50 with £1 ish shipping
RoseDog · 14/03/2020 21:55
Ours is stocked with dog food! If coronavirus takes over the dog will eat well
