Closing schools over 10 deaths would not help

All those teenagers would be hanging out together and roaming all over towns.

THis is why the chief medical officer is not doing it, he knows best I think

All schools & universities in Ireland are closed, as of this evening, for an initial 2 weeks

BorneFeet · 12/03/2020 16:26

and no evidence it will even help

Surely a large number of teenagers would be in their rooms on xboxes and playstations.

It will likely go from 10 to double figures very quick. I think Italy are regretting not closing earlier. All outdoor events over 500 and indoor over 100 are told not to go ahead. Work places have been advised to stagger breaks and no face to face meetings are to take place. I am going to meet with my line manager to see if I can work from home as I have two primary school children and school is closed for 2 weeks from today in ROI.

I think Ireland's chosen a better route children could be vectors of infection for older people and taking a harder line on closures now will hopefully contribute to containing it earlier and making the risk to public exams in early summer less.

It's perfectly possible the UK will follow suit.

I don’t think it’s that simple though. Children are known to be super spreaders for things like flu so nothing to suggest that won’t be the case here even if they aren’t at risk themselves. Reducing the amount of people that they come into contact in a confined space would well help massively to reduce the spread of it. Seeing one or two friends isn’t the same as spending all day every day with hundreds of others

Isadora2007 · 12/03/2020 16:33

Closing care of the elderly wards and respiratory wards plus all care homes to all but essential visitors is a better move than closing schools.
Spacing people at outdoor events is a good idea and even at indoor ones as well.
But not mass banning of all events and gatherings and closing schools. That’s just too far.

Evenquieterlife33 · 12/03/2020 16:38

I love the way ALL kids are thought to just automatically be hanging around the streets. FFS is that the case in Ireland? In Poland? Nope. Guess what they even have teenagers in those countries too! The only reason kids schools are open in the U.K is to ensure that key workers are not lost and the economy keeps on ticking. The only small consideration is that as infection climbs through children’s contact at school key workers will be lost and the economy will tank and more lives will be lost. Also the idea that NO kids anywhere are effected is premature. Nobody knows how this is going to go or mutate. Nobody.

If the final death toll was going to be 10 there might be some sense to your "arguement ". And why would they be roaming round town?

BorneFeet · 12/03/2020 16:51

What about all the nurses with children? Hospitals can't run if they're all at home as schools are closed.

I think Ireland's chosen a better route

It would have been more sensible to quarantine all the lot who'd been to the Cheltenham festival. But I guess that would affect a lot of men 🙄

Teateaandmoretea · 12/03/2020 16:56

And why would they be roaming round town?

You think if schools are closed all the kids will stay in? Why is that to turn it round 🤷🏻‍♀️

Then their parents should be dealing with it FFS

Porcupineinwaiting · 12/03/2020 17:44

Not all nurses are lone parents of young children. Do you know what happens to medical personnel when the hospitals are overwhelmed? They become exhausted, run down and perfect virus fodder. And because their viral load is disproportionately large they get disproportionately sicker than the average Joe and have a higher death rate than others in their age class. Is that what you want for them?

Teateaandmoretea · 12/03/2020 19:41

Well two possibilities. They may be feckless or at work y'know nursing the sick or trying to keep a roof over their head or something.
