Why are people booking holidays?

Saw a friend on Monday, they always go away in the Easter hols for their birthdays but hadn't booked anything yet, they have since booked a week to a Greek island.

Chose it based on current number of cases (I'm assuming low/zero) but I don't understand the logic.

So many people say that they'll go on a pre-booked holiday unless told otherwise because they can't afford to lose money/booked it months ago etc but why would someone book a holiday now?!

We have not. We are waiting to see what happens. Also due to my son doing his GCSE this year. And not really knowing when his exams or him having to stay at school longer. So we not wasting our money at the moment.

middleager · 12/03/2020 06:40

Well it has reached the Greek islands, so all those island hoppers will ensure it spreads. There's also airports, planes. Anybody who thinks they are 'safe' is living under a false sense of security.

Colleagues are still planning to go to Tenerife and DFIL loves the idea of a bargain, despite being in a very high risk group.

I wouldn't even book a UK break in the current climate.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 12/03/2020 06:43

Because it's cheap and there's just as much chance of catching it here as anywhere else now?

Mumdiva99 · 12/03/2020 06:43

I booked a UK break yesterday. If I had the money I would book a bargain break abroad - but I don't. If this becomes a massive spread virus we will probably all get it at some point anyway. No need to stop life forever because of it. (I got the UK one booked quick because I think prices will rise because of this virus as many people don't want to go abroad - or have holidays cancelled and look for alternatives).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/03/2020 06:47

I admit I've just booked something for February next year! But just the hotel as it's free cancellation.

Wouldn't be booking anything for this year now if I wasn't already booked. We're supposed to be going to Butlins at Easter but I'm holding off booking the train tickets yet.

teenagetantrums · 12/03/2020 06:57

We going to book for September. I presume this will be all over by then.
We came back 2days ago from canaries was very busy. I think most people are just carrying in life as normal.

Caspianberg · 12/03/2020 07:06

We need to fly in September ideally (to family). I will be keeping an eye on flights over the next few weeks and will book refundable ones if the prices drops.

Grufallosfriends · 12/03/2020 07:14

If cases continue to rise in the UK, we may well not be welcome abroad, especially in countries with less cases!

Skyejuly · 12/03/2020 07:19

I think it will be the case people shut doors to the UK too..

IceColdCat · 12/03/2020 07:22

I'd be worried about getting stuck abroad and not able to return to the UK if flights are cancelled. Not booking our summer holiday at the moment.

Oblomov20 · 12/03/2020 07:23

I want to book a holiday and haven't been able to! With Ds1 finishing early (I'm still optimistic that GCSE's will go ahead in some format!) and Ds2 finishing primary SAT's early, we can afford a nice holiday in term time, say end of June.

But now can't. What a bugger!
Wink

Purplewhitelie · 12/03/2020 07:24

You think it will be over by a few months? Think again.

milveycrohn · 12/03/2020 07:32

Well, I have postponed booking a holiday.
( was originally planning to go to Italy, duh!)
However, I am recently retired, so not restricted to school holidays - in fact we usually go outside of school holidays.
So, I am currently waiting... I will see what the situation is like in June. We may just stay in the UK.
I am still planning days out. (Doesn't mean it will happen).

funmummy48 · 12/03/2020 07:39

Because I could be knocked down by a bus\killed in a car accident I the way to work this morning or some other unexpected disaster could befall upon me. I'm the child of a "prepper" and lived in a constant state of anxiety as a child. As an adult I'm determined to make the most of life and not to live in fear of something that may or may not happen.

Greggers2017 · 12/03/2020 07:45

We've got several holidays booked this year and intend to go on all of them unless we are told otherwise.

Whoknows11 · 12/03/2020 07:50

I'm due to go to NYC in 3 weeks and gutted it might not happen now! I have worked so much over the last 6 months to be able to take my children there and so disappointed.

Double3xposure · 12/03/2020 07:52

Me too. I’m just as likely to catch it in the big city where I work.

DoubleAction · 12/03/2020 07:54

Lots more failing travel agents and airlines then?

How long is no one going on holiday for?

If there are fewer cases where they're going won't they be safer than staying at home?

madcatladyforever · 12/03/2020 07:57

Because they are stupid selfish arses who don't care if the spread the virus about and cause deaths so long as they get what they want. It's as simple as that.

okiedokieme · 12/03/2020 07:58

I am, I'll go unless they ban travel (and I'm insured) going hillwalking by motorbike, staying in a tent so hardly high risk!

madcatladyforever · 12/03/2020 07:59

It's not all about YOU and what you might catch it's about what happens to vulnerable people you infect.

middleager · 12/03/2020 08:00

It's not about being safer.
It's about falling ill in another country and not being able to get back.

These are very worrying times for the holiday industry, but it's unfair to have a go at people for not wanting to travel and for only singling out the travel industry.

I too worry about DH's job in insurance. It would also cost the insurance industry unprecedented amounts to put people up in hotels and cover medical bills when people have knowingly travelled amid this and then require treatment or additional accommodation/new flights etc.

dalmatianmad · 12/03/2020 08:03

We're booked to go away next week, Cape Verde, will go unless advised not too.
I think its very likely that most of us will catch it anyway and I say this a front line NHS worker.
Its going to be survival of the fittest.....

Kazzyhoward · 12/03/2020 08:09

Yep - that sums it up. "I'm going to do what I want to do and sod everyone else, and I'm going to kick and scream if they don't let me." Pure selfishness, but would you expect anything else from the snowflake generation of me, me, me.

Sunshinesky1981 · 12/03/2020 08:10

We are supposed to go to Florida in the summer holidays. Am preparing myself for not being able to go , especially now that the USA has banned travel from a large number of European countries. Am thankful that we got our travel insurance and paid extra for travel disruption. If we tried to get insurance now we would be more worried as the insurance company is not even offering it as an option anymore
