Panic buyers!!!

In the wake of the corona virus in sure we’ve all seen the clips on social media of crowds of people going in and buying all the loo roll.

I get that some people are scared and would like to self isolate and be prepared for this which is fair enough.

I’m not so scared of the virus but I’m scared of not been able to buy baby milk for my son as it’s all been bought. I can understand that some of the panic buyers are buying because the shelves are clearing in record time!

I’m no longer breast feeding so that’s not an option, I just hope that people will see sense soon and stop being so god damn selfish.

Idiots. Stay calm. Be sensible.

Heartburn888 · 12/03/2020 02:02

Indeed

Just waiting for the petrol panic buyers to start..I filled up yesterday as was empty and that will last about 4 months as rarely use the car....seems some people will just buy mountain s of anything to be part of the frenzy !!

JingsMahBucket · 12/03/2020 02:29

Was there a reason why you didn’t stock up in the past few weeks?

Heartburn888 · 12/03/2020 10:42

I’m not going to join the procession of panic buyers and leaving nothing for other people it’s plain selfish. It’s another stain of the flu it’s not a zombie apocalypse

I went to morrisons this morning. No pasta, no dog food, not much tinned food. Loads of loo roll though. No bread mix, no bread flour.

bellinisurge · 12/03/2020 10:46

Please don't start with the "it's just flu " nonsense when you are making otherwise sensible point

Morgan12 · 12/03/2020 10:47

I've basically been forced to stock up on some things now before they completely sell out. It's ridiculous. But I have two fussy eaters who need certain kinds of beans etc. So needs must.

I see no reason to assume that the people deliberately clearing the shelves of a particular product are any more responsible for shortages than those buying an extra on or two or replacing easier than they otherwise would. Especially not products which are always or sometimes limited to a small number per customer anyway.

polkadotdenim · 12/03/2020 10:52

I’m really pissed off about this. 8 months pg and housebound. No baby milk, anti-bacterial products or toilet paper available with online food shopping in my area is it’s a fairly small town. Nothing in the shops when partner and family have been. I genuinely cannot clean my home because of selfish idiots. I’ve even checked through the whole of Amazon. No anti-bacterial wipes or sprays, only stuff in bulk for £30+ which I don’t need as I can make a bottle last a month. All I have in the house is Flash Bleach Spray which I don’t want to use on kitchen surfaces etc.

I always thought there was a 2 tub limit on baby milk as people were buying them to sell overseas and make a profit. And why the hell where customers not prevented from buying a surplus of products? I remember a very calm couple in an East Mids supermarket being filmed brutally dragged on the floor by supermarket security for refusing to leave when trying to buy a large amount of bottled drinks. This is because they presumed they were selling them on which they insisted they weren’t. What’s to say some of these so called ‘panic buyers’ aren’t selling the surplus on? I’ve already seen hand sanitiser on Shpock and Ebay. The video in question went viral and made me feel sick to my stomach watching it. Disgusting, fat cat hypocrites only want to make loads of money when it suits them. They’ve definitely been taking advantage of the hysteria. Wouldn’t be surprised if they start putting the prices up on everything once it’s restocked!

DroppedBoxxedRuth · 12/03/2020 10:54

You know what's going to happen, why aren't you preparing?

The shelves are clearing because they're not manufacturing enough. And people are buying a bit more, which is now showing as 'panic buying'

I'm in Aus. We have stocked up on toilet paper as we can't get to the shops every day at restocking time so have only bought toilet paper once in 3.5 weeks.

We also have a big bag full of non perishable food stored away that will get eaten eventually.

Don't blame people, blame Just In Time manufacturing and the fact China went into lock down.

bingbangbing · 12/03/2020 10:56

The panic buyers are selfish twats. It's vile

Loppy10 · 12/03/2020 10:57

Really the only thing more tiresome than the "it's just the flu, calm down lol" types that were criticising us for prepping a few weeks ago is the same people now coming out and chastising us because they didn't bother to prep and now can't buy anything. All while still spouting patronising lines about it being "not the zombie apocalypse"

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 12/03/2020 10:59

It's all well and good being sanctimonious and calling others selfish, but it's my job to make sure my kids are provided for, I have done just that (over the last 2 or 3 months, but if I hadn't I would be stocking up when I can now), if others want to keep telling everyone to calm down and not be selfish and assume that shelves will be full, that's on them, this will last a while yet, so I would be stocking up on baby milk if I were you. Its not just the virus, there will be supply issues with lots of things too so you would be wise to plan ahead. I'm not going to apologise for making sure my kids are ok.

bingbangbing · 12/03/2020 10:59

@Loppy10

Not everyone can hoard.

Income, storage, ability to get it all home etc

VegetableMunge · 12/03/2020 11:01

Yeah I think in a lot of shops there are formula limits. Afaik it isn't the same as paracetamol where it's a legal requirement though.

mamamalt · 12/03/2020 11:02

I was in Sainsbury's this morning. No loo roll, no rice, no pasta, no hand soap. Lots more empty shelves that I don't know what should have been there. But there was loads of formula and nappies

VegetableMunge · 12/03/2020 11:08

I've a great deal of sympathy for people who can't prepare, but the OP is one of the it's only flu brigade. Meaning even if she could prep, she's not been responsible enough to educate herself.

polkadotdenim · 12/03/2020 11:08

Quite a lot of people live on week to week wages and have to be frugal in order to afford a nice home, car etc. Like in my post, I do have the option to spend £30 on a bulk pack of expensive anti-bacterial cleaner. I don’t want to have to spend £30 when I should be able to spend £1-2 on one bottle and make it stretch a month. Other £29 can go on baby stuff and food shopping.

AllPointsNorth · 12/03/2020 11:08

I think it’s very thoughtful of all those who neither prepped or bought in bulk to leave the stock for others, because otherwise it’d be selfish.
But odd that they didn’t think about what they’d do to manage if they had no stuff, having generously put others first.

bellinisurge · 12/03/2020 11:11

If they'd bought in slowly a bit at a time over several months as budget and circumstances allow - like a prepper not a panicker- this wouldn't be a reason to panic.
Plenty of advice on here about that for well over a year.

Skyejuly · 12/03/2020 11:17

Buy a different brand if need be?

Yep so many people said I was over reacting but I have children that need certain things so yes I stock up as I have a responsibility to do so I think. Soon as wuhan went into lockdown I made sure I brought extra of everything plus a bit more for luck.

I have a small house. I store it under beds and under stairs.

bingbangbing · 12/03/2020 11:17

Those blaming vulnerable people for not hoarding, obviously have never had £5 to last the week, arthritis and/or a tiny, damp home

Hoarding is not possible for some. It's not that they are stupid. They just can't.

No sense of communal responsibility.

Findumdum1 · 12/03/2020 11:18

THIS THIS THIS

All the people moaning on facebook and here a couple of weeks ago about "calm down, its only a flu ffs/flu kills more people you know" are now the same ones moaning about not being able to buy things that very predictably now harder to get in the supermarkets because most people have been buying one or two more than normal - again, very sensibly and very predictably.

CAUSE ...... EFFECT

I also wonder if those same people re making any extra effort to go to the supermarket early, try corner shops, garages etc or just complaining that the thing they want to buy isn't there in the afternoon when they normally go shopping.
