Australia family wedding

MIL's wedding is at Easter. We had a baby daughter a few months ago, and understandably MIL is very excited to see her granddaughter again and for us to attend her wedding. I have massive anxiety over the possibility of us becoming stranded in Australia. If things remain as they are with the virus I would have no qualms with going, but realistically it's very likely that thinks are going to get a lot worse here over the next few weeks. My worry is that things will be at their peak just before we're about to head off.

AIBU for wanting to seriously suggest to DH that we don't go? I've tentatively already brought it up with him, but haven't pressed it as I felt so selfish.

Well it obviously depends where you're going in Australia. But to be honest, they have a lot fewer cases there than we do, so you're probably safer over there!

I'd definitely go.

BIWI · 11/03/2020 22:25

As of today, these are the confirmed cases:

60 in New South Wales
15 in Queensland
6 in South Australia
2 in Tasmania
15 in Victoria*
4 in Western Australia
10 associated with the Diamond Princess cruise ship

  • Note: Victoria case count includes a case detected in NSW. Under the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System reporting requirements the case is considered a Victorian case. Further details: 15 of the initially reported cases in Australia all had a direct or indirect travel history to Wuhan, China 10 cases, including 1 death, are associated with the Diamond Princess cruise ship repatriation flight from Japan 18 cases are reported to have had a direct or indirect travel link to Iran 39 cases are reported to have had a direct or indirect travel link to countries including the United States of America, United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, Italy, Iceland, Singapore, Thailand, the Republic of Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, Nepal, Egypt, Austria, France, Spain, Hong Kong. 27 cases, including 2 deaths, do not have a reported history of overseas travel 8 of these cases are associated with an aged care facility in NSW. 2 residents of this facility have sadly died 2 cases are either directly or indirectly associated with attendance at a workshop 17 cases are close contacts of known cases, with further details pending The likely place of exposure for a further 3 newly reported cases is under investigation Of the 112 Australian cases reported, 24 of these cases are reported to have recovered.

That's some helpful data, thank you.

It's not however so much that I'm worried about one of us getting the virus (although I am asthmatic), it's that I would worry about the return flight being cancelled once we're out there or either Australia/UK being placed under a strict lockdown, restricting travel. I really, really don't want to be trapped on the other side of the world. Don't know if I'm being ridiculous though- and feel v selfish for even thinking it due to my MIL who is obviously very excited!

Oh fuck it - stay in Australia! That's what I'd do! (Love it there Grin)

MoltonSilver · 11/03/2020 22:43

The decision might be taken out of your hands. As the situation in Europe escalates you may find that Australia won't let you in.

Their figures are low but they are only coming into traditional flu season, we are nearing the end of it.

worried8 · 11/03/2020 22:47

@MoltonSilver hmmm hadn't considered that it's start of 'flu season for Australia! The selfish parts of me would rather they announced that decision sooner rather than later if they're going to do it.

As much as I love Australia as a holiday destination- I don't want my DH, DD and I to be trapped there!

Things are moving quickly. She may have to postpone the wedding.

BIWI · 11/03/2020 23:01

Sadly I agree with@MoltonSilver - it could very well be the case, given the way the disease is spreading here, that you might not be allowed into Australia

worried8 · 11/03/2020 23:01

The thing is, she speaks to DH quite often and so far she hasn't mentioned coronavirus once. Don't know if she genuinely hasn't considered it might be an issue, or if she just doesn't want to bring it up in case it prompts us to consider not going!

Just seen the news from the US. I know the ban doesn't include people travelling from the UK, but do we think this increased the chances of Australia imposing such a ban soon, or is it just Trump being a bit odd?
