Thee toilet roll buyers

Still confused as no one had answered this:

Why are people fighting over toilet rolls and rice when you can buy it online cheaper?

They all have smart phones so know they have internet access?

Even with delivery it’s still cheaper?

Because people want it in their house as soon as possible in case they have to isolate. They don't want to wait a couple of days and hope item is delivered.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 18:40

It arrived pretty quick.

I have a plentiful supply of newspapers if we run out...it was good enough for our ancestors when they had outdoor privies, so it's good enough for my backside Grin

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 11/03/2020 18:42

Joking...it would block the loo.

ElenadeClermont · 11/03/2020 18:42

Not everyone can be at home for home delivery I guess.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 18:43

I say throw it over our gate if I’m at work?

The Romans used a sponge on a stick. It was kept in a jar of vinegar.

TweetUsOnFacebook · 11/03/2020 18:48

I guess a lot of people don't want to buy online. My inlaws on their 70s don't trust it.

I've got some in my amazon basket ready to buy when we need it. 45 rolls for £16 ish delivered is a great price.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 18:49

Yes I find amazon the cheapest.

Not sure about the vinegar Smile

Yes, I always get the bulk packs from Amazon when they drop the price a bit as they often do, I didn’t need to get any at the moment as I already have plenty in

DontCallMeShitley · 11/03/2020 18:59

I buy TP for the office. I left it until it was close to being needed and ordered on Amazon before the madness really took hold. One small order of an eco one arrived quickly (sensitive) but the normal order didn't arrive on time, delivery date changed, finally received a refund notification.

If you are going to buy online be aware that sellers are obviously selling on more than one venue and you may not get it anyway, even if it says 200 in stock, it won't be and no guarantee you will get it.

viccat · 11/03/2020 19:50

Lots of people don't shop online. My mother for example has never bought anything online and is very suspicious of card security etc.
Online supermarkets are running out of stock too as they use the exact same suppliers.
You can order something online and it'll be out of stock by your delivery day so you won't actually get it.
People are unlikely to change their shopping habits completely - if they always shop at the local Tesco, they are unlikely to suddenly look elsewhere if they don't have to.

PleasantVille · 11/03/2020 19:54

I still haven't seen a proper explanation of why they need to panic buy it at all. It's totally bizarre that there are a group of people eating only pasta, washing their hands and going to the loo.

Saying "chuck it over the gate" is all well and good if you have a garden, but no use to people living in blocks of flats. The last flat I lived in I ordered something and it was delivered while I was out so the driver left it with my neighbour, even though I hadn't left any instructions to do so. When I went to get it from him later he was very abusive and threatening and basically said if anything else ever got delivered to him I'd never see it again. Sadly we don't live in a world where everyone has a back garden or a friendly neighbour.

Having said that, I now have both a back garden and a friendly neighbour and I still buy my loo paper from the supermarket. It honestly never crossed my mind to get it from somewhere like amazon. So I guess... Thanks for the tip!

bellinisurge · 11/03/2020 20:13

Answered this question several times on various threads. People don't want to self isolate with the risk of no loo roll in the house. They are panicking because the situation is so fluid - better to have loo roll in your hand than to trust delivery reliability.
Shows up the difference between panickers and Preppers - a prepper like me sorted this kind of thing out months and months ago but by bit as part of a general preparedness strategy

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 20:17

Well yeh I did buy my stuff about 4 5 weeks ago.
