So at last it's officially a pandemic, will this change government to be proactive or will they call another meeting?

The WHO chief says: "We have called every day for countries to take urgent and aggressive action. We have rung the alarm bell loud and clear."

Not sure Bojo has heard the alarm bell.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 16:51

Apparently its all scaremongering experts know nothing according to a lot of mums.HmmConfused

NeverTwerkNaked · 11/03/2020 16:51

I think the WHO are very clearly indicating their frustration with Boris and Trump and other minimisers

TheMemoryLingers · 11/03/2020 16:52

experts know nothing

Why am I getting a sense of deja vu?

stella1know · 11/03/2020 16:54

Surely this will trigger a whole set of pre-agreed measures, ratified between countries years ago?

TheMemoryLingers · 11/03/2020 16:55

I feel as though I'm watching the film 'Titanic' - the bit where the ship has just hit the iceberg but everyone's wandering round on deck talking about putting the fire on in their rooms and having a nice cup of tea.

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 16:58

I know it's getting a bit late but I'm urging friends and family to take kids out of school where they can.
I can see why they wanted to keep the economy going, but some of our children don't need to be there.
We are our own childcare and could have helped to slow down the spread.
Schools aren't even bothering to clean now, let alone advise self isolation.
I don't blame the schools they do as they are told, but we don't have to, we are individuals, they don't own us.

Funnily enough, a close friend was trying to get their adult DD (who has three young DC) to try to make some basic preparations today. The adult DD said that 'brexit had happened and no-one noticed' so we'll all be fine.

ShanghaiDiva · 11/03/2020 16:58

I have the same feeling and as a China resident, I know how this one ends...

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 17:02

At first I could even understand a sense of them and us. I was remembering past fears of SARS and MERS, when my dc were young.
I couldn't remember being as scared as I am now, and I would have been considering my dc the same as any parent.
Then I remembered there was a sense of "Oh, it won't come here" "It's them over there, that need to be careful"
I think even in this short space of time we have become more global and now it isn't 'them over there" or those who went on holiday.

Titanic is a good analogy.
I was thinking War of The Worlds. But not any particular bit.

YY @TheMemoryLingers

I took my dc out of school yesterday after a woman on my estate has been confirmed to have it and is now in an induced coma. I'm not too worried about myself or dc catching it - although I'd rather we didn't! - My family are mostly in the higher risk category so I won't risk it. I feel that BoZo has tried to downplay it and I feel abandoned tbh. Listening to WHO and the extremes other countries have gone to over the last few weeks has left me feeling that I have to do what is best for my family rather than being led by our government to keep us safe. I could practically hear the eyes of the attendance person at school rolling when I phone and said that because of the local case I was keeping dc off. I don't care if they think I'm overreacting. It's obviously hard to know just how long to keep them off and I just wish this hadn't happened...

Jaxhog · 11/03/2020 17:27

It means exactly - nothing. According to WHO this is just a word, and doesn't change anything in terms of recommendations. It's still up to Governments to make their own decisions about what to do based on local conditions.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 17:30

Will we get fined though? (I have been thinking of the Titanic all week!

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 17:34

Purple

I don't see how they could if you said you were self isolating, then Easter hols, then decide after.
I'm not suggesting it's for everyone but some have deregistered.
If you have a Y6 would solve SATS problem as well Grin

BBC News - Coronavirus confirmed as pandemic by World Health Organization
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-51839944

WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the number of cases outside China had increased 13-fold over the past two weeks

He said he was "deeply concerned" by "alarming levels of inaction" over the virus

Would that be the UK government? Amongst others US etc

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 18:10

God help us all.

I don't think a lot of younger people realise that when they get it, it might not just be mild like flu, although this kills too.
With younger people being affected and pictures of 20ish/30 ish year olds in ICU, you'd think they had the message by now.

Same.

We're self isolating as much as possible.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 18:21

I worked out a couple of weeks ago what a lot of the problem is.

A lot of the generation who are under 35 mums are the vaccine kids. Many have never had something like measles.

So it’s hard for them to imagine being that ill and feel it won’t happen to them.

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 19:00

Purple

You could be right, but also medical advances.
I was a very poorly asthmatic child, looking back I really could have died, many times over. There weren't inhalers my mum was told to take me near tarmac being put down, or burning some oil. A pink liquid called penidural? that did fuck all.

Me and my siblings all had measles, mumps and rubella. My parents must have been scared shitless. 3 of us all after each other. We had to keep the curtains closed as couldn't stand the light, dsis couldn't open her eyes at one point.

We had chicken pox parties because it was better to get them young.
