The grandmother has become the oldest person to recover from the deadly disease so far - days after a 101-year-old man also beat the virus in Wuhan.
A 100-year-old man with Alzheimer's disease, hypertension and heart failure also recovered from the virus in Wuhan this week after being treated by military doctors.

Tbh a lot of people on this topic don’t want to hear positive news. They’d rather focus on how everyone is going to get it and etc

BruceAndNosh · 11/03/2020 14:39

I am taking a lot of the News coming out of China with a large pinch of salt and a dollop of hand sanitiser

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/03/2020 14:40

They’re reiterating the point of no underlying health conditions. Most types of flu, etc (and I know this isn’t flu!) only prove fatal in the case of the already ill or immunocompromised.
This is the same pattern.

I'm just trying to show that not everyone who has underlying conditions is actually going die.

Thanks for sharing. It gives hope.

SabineSchmetterling · 11/03/2020 15:02

Of course they won’t. The death rate in over 80s is very high, but the vast majority, even in that demographic, do recover. It’s dangerous for older people but I don’t think anyone has claimed it’s certain death.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 11/03/2020 15:11

Yes, very dangerous for older people but still most survive IF THEY HAVE ACCESS TO MEDICAL CARE, which they don't always currently in Italy and they won't here if NHS overwhelmed.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 11/03/2020 15:12

This is the point of delay measures, to ensure everyone who needs them has access to medical care. most people will catch it eventually but there's a big difference to doing so with or without a functioning NHS.

Inkpaperstars · 11/03/2020 15:20

Totally agree with @Langbanned about the medical care, which is why I am so worried about the govt not having taking any delay measures re Italian travellers etc

But thanks for highlighting these cases, I have screen shotted and will be telling some of my older relatives to cheer them up! Good to hear some hopeful stories.

GrumpyHoonMain · 11/03/2020 15:20

In China people over a 100 years old tend to live at home or in special care homes while those who are only a few years younger may still live independently. So it’s very possible these individuals received quicker treatment than the people who died.

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/03/2020 15:22

What treatment are they currently being offered, though, I thought there was no treatment? Ventilators, maybe?

HopeClearwater · 11/03/2020 15:40

That poor guy with Alzheimer’s, let’s hope something else carries him off soon

Thisismytimetoshine · 11/03/2020 15:44

Yes, indeed. It doesn’t seem like a kindness that he was saved, really Confused

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 15:46

Well my gran lived to 100 and used to smoke 40 fags a day. But I wouldn’t recommended it as not everyone makes it. True story.

Langbannedforsafeguardingkids · 11/03/2020 16:57

Yes ventilators - but the Chinese cases talk of other drugs - not sure what - antivirals, I think there's even been some talk of experimental antivirals which have been used in China and elsewhere such as remdesivir
