Hi everyone, I booked my son's 5th birthday party at a indoor playcentre for early next month but I'm wondering if I should postpone it....what would you do

I’ve told both my DC their parties will be postponed til ‘after’. I hadn’t booked anything yet though.

Have you sent out invitations? If not I’d definitely cancel. If you have, I’d maybe wait. I’m assuming everything will become much clearer in a couple of weeks. (Ie it’ll be bad so you’ll not think twice about cancelling).

Poppydaisies · 11/03/2020 16:09

I'd definitely postpone!

I expect things to get much worse over the next 4-6 weeks. And we may all have to quarantine them, like in Italy now?

TheVanguardSix · 11/03/2020 16:10

Postpone. It sucks, doesn’t it?
I was going to book a church hall for DD’s 10th birthday disco next month but it wouldn’t be the right thing.
We’ll just have to have ‘later’ celebrations.

Rory786 · 11/03/2020 16:34

Thank you everyone. We did book, pay and send out invites! However the manager said we can have a full refund so I think I will definitely postpone and individually call each parent. Xx

My son’s is booked for the end of this month, soft play. Haven’t taken any action yet but I’m assuming I’m going to have to postpone/cancel.

stripes416 · 11/03/2020 16:47

Does this mean nobody is going to soft play centres at the moment? I'm not sure what to do with my lo as I don't want to keep her in all the time but I'm also wary of taking her to groups or play centres at the moment. Not sure what to do for the best

womanaf · 11/03/2020 17:29

Outside, stripes.

(For as long as they’re in school, I’m not sure it matters but if LO is pre-school, then definitely.)

ItchySeveredFoot · 11/03/2020 17:31

I would postpone. Dd's 6th birthday is in 3 weeks but luckily it's a small private place with the people she already sees at school so we were lucky. Nearly booked a soft play weeks ago and was just saying today how glad I am that we didn't.

theflushedzebra · 11/03/2020 17:33

I wouldn't go anywhere near a soft play right now, that's for sure - I've even cancelled a social event at the pub tonight.

So yes, I'd postpone.

Feedthispiggychoc · 11/03/2020 17:37

We have a gymnastics 6th party booked for two weeks and invites were sent last day of Feb half term. We are going to go ahead and still have it but I've antibacterial wipes on hand in case parents want them

wonkylegs · 11/03/2020 17:46

I will be avoiding soft play parties for the moment as I'm immunosuppressed and feel that it's an unnecessary risk - too many people including children who lick, sneeze, wipe noses on everything even if they are washing their hands
We will reassess next month when it's DSs birthday depending on how the situation changes but we were planning an outside party (treasure hunt) which would be less risky and as it's at ours, no problem with bookings so we may just postpone for a bit if we need to.

BothALarkAndAnOwl · 11/03/2020 17:50

I have a disco party booked for a church hall this Saturday for 25 10 year olds. Have been dithering about what to do but am now veering towards postponing......

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/03/2020 17:54

I think a disco party for 10yos would be fine. Its soft play that worries me. I was at a soft play party at the weekend and my 2yo was licking the Cosy Coupe and mine sweeping recently vacated tables.Envy

BothALarkAndAnOwl · 11/03/2020 17:57

Do you, Dione? That’s encouraging - I think. They’re all schoolmates so presumably already share germs....

trilbydoll · 11/03/2020 18:05

If the party guests are all at school together and schools aren't closed I can't see what difference a party makes. Once schools close it'll be a different matter.

I'm just booking a hall for DD2 5th party at the end of May, we will see what's going on once we get closer to the date.

PatchworkElmer · 11/03/2020 18:05

Postpone it- I think a lot of people would drop out/ not turn up anyway.

We’ve got 2 parties at the end of the month that we’ll be making our excuses for if things get worse- we’ll still send a gift, but I will feel bad for the birthday children. Not worth the risk for us though as DH has a chronic health condition.

Brunelofbrio · 11/03/2020 18:08

We’ve got invites to 3 softplay type parties in the next couple of weeks. I am holding off RSVPing until I can see that there is no chance for DD to go, but reading this thread is making me think I need to send my apologies sooner rather than later.

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/03/2020 18:25

Like you say BothALarkAndAnOwl, they're at school together and it sounds like a dump and run party as far as parents are concerned so I would go ahead.

I will not be going to soft play again in the near future as DC2 now has a temperature and is producing copious amounts of snot.Envy
