Can't decide whether to cancel trip to New York or not. Help us decide?

DH and I have a trip to NY booked, flying out on Monday. We are not the worrying sorts but my DH is keen to cancel. He really has his eye on the ball with the CV issues as he is in charge of the current plans re the virus for the large international company he works for and he believes things in NY will get worse soon as he has been talking with staff there. He fears having to self isolate at any point. His work are already under massive pressure and I know they are already going to struggle without him for a week while he goes on holiday.

We can cancel our accommodation with no penalty and get a refund on our flights (we were using airmails to travel). Our trip to the the UN has already been cancelled due to CV concerns and refunded by them. We have tickets for a gig and a show. If they are not cancelled by them we would lose that money and they were very expensive.

Do you think it would be prudent to pull out now? Wait a few days and see what happens in NY? Go anyway? DH wants to discuss our plans this evening and I want to have my thoughts straight.

@BettyBo33 if you go, please will you update the thread on conditions on the ground, so to speak? I would appreciate it hugely.

FredaFox · 11/03/2020 23:27

I’m going mid April, will lose money if I cancel right now so I’m kinda hoping the government step in but it’s still a good month away, will the virus have peaked and started to wane by then?
It’s the flight that worry’s me more. You are contained in a box with everyone’s germs

Ratrace123 · 11/03/2020 23:32

We’re meant to be going at half term. I’m in watch and wait mode. We booked a Virgin holidays package and I’m so glad we did as it gives us better protection. If FCO advice changes for the worse we will be offered chance to defer holiday or change destination (during same time window). Both options will have additional charges and subject to availability.

TheFlis12345 · 11/03/2020 23:35

Hamilton on Broadway??? Not a chance in hell I would cancel that. Infection rates in NY are really low and if you got stuck there, any decent insurance will cover it (but they won’t cover cancelling unless government advised).

AndWhatNext · 11/03/2020 23:41

Flights and accommodation minimal, but concert and theatre ticket cost maybe not... I would cancel.

My (no qualifications) is that concert and theatre may be cancelled.(Hamilton is on in London too...)

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 23:47

Health is wealth.

PickAChew · 11/03/2020 23:49

I would cancel. Lots of places there on lock down and no guarantee that if you could get in you could get out again.

Frazzled2207 · 11/03/2020 23:57

We saw Hamilton in west end and the weekendA tickets were fully refundable at the box office up to 48h before. We got one of our 4 tickets refunded this way. Worth asking.
Hope you get to go another time.

BettyBo33 · 11/03/2020 23:59

@LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett Yes I’ll update you all

GiantKitten · 12/03/2020 00:07

Have you cancelled Hamilton for a refund, OP?

DD lives in NYC & it took her 2 years to get Hamilton tickets. She would buy them off you like a shot to go again!

(She’s a teacher & her spring break travel next week has been cancelled Sad)

Ratrace123 · 12/03/2020 00:13

I just noted that Virgin holidays are allowing you to defer holiday without FCO advice changing, goodwill. I’ll probably make a decision in next week. Such a shame as we’d all been looking forward to it. Next issue is how far ahead is safe to defer?

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 12/03/2020 00:16

Donald Trump is making a statement about 1am our time and is expected to discuss banning travel from Europe into US. So the decision could be taken out of your hands yet.

We are supposed to be getting married in NY in 2 weeks. I dont know what to do.

Ratrace123 · 12/03/2020 00:19

Oh no Snip, I’m so sorry - how incredibly frustrating. I really hope you manage to sort something out. Do you have wedding insurance?

QOD · 12/03/2020 00:19

I’ve been planning to go in June for about a year. I haven’t actually physically booked anything as dd has struggled with her uni placement
I will not be booking or going
I could go for a Third Of the price but half the sights will be closed !

Knowhowufeel2 · 12/03/2020 00:25

I'd go for Hamilton alone, but I'm kinda obsessed with that show, and I flew to Geneva for the day yesterday, so probably not the best to give advice.

DulciUke · 12/03/2020 01:16

Trump just cancelled all travel to, and presumably from, Europe for 30 days, starting Friday.

JWrecks · 12/03/2020 01:19

I think he said the ban does not include the UK?

eeeyoresmiles · 12/03/2020 01:20

Snip, can you get married here instead and postpone the idea of a special trip or party until next year? I don't know how it works if you were planning to do it abroad, but I think I'd want to get it done now one way or another just to be married.

The NY version or repeating of vows could be a lovely thing to look forward to after all this is over.

SecretWitch · 12/03/2020 01:21

I just read the travel restriction does not include the UK

Parker231 · 12/03/2020 01:22

US President Donald Trump has announced sweeping new travel restrictions on Europe in a bid to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
In a televised address on Wednesday, he said all travel from Europe would be suspended for the next 30 days.
But he said the "strong but necessary" restrictions would not apply to the UK, where 460 cases of the virus have now been confirmed.

HoldMyLobster · 12/03/2020 01:24

Ah shit - I'm sorry :-(

wafflyversatile · 12/03/2020 01:27

The US govt response has been even worse than ours. I'd cancel.

Parker231 · 12/03/2020 01:27

Trump’s ruling does not affect the UK.

Silvergreen · 12/03/2020 01:30

Don't go. I'm in the same position and I'm not going either. It's just not worth it.

MoltonSilver · 12/03/2020 01:36

There ruling doesn't include the UK for now. That could change at a moment's notice. I'd cancel.
