Do you feel life is on hold?

Are we all just holding back a little bit from job hunting, booking holidays making plans with friends etc?

I feel that I’m just going to work & going home & staying there, haven’t been shopping for 10 days

I’d planned on going to Portugal at the end of this month but had to cancel those plans due to other reason, haven’t booked any holidays for this year or made plans with friends

Anyone actually make future plans?

Can't believe that people are so impatient that they can't just hold back for a few weeks/months - most will have many years ahead to catch up.

Selfish people who are carrying on as normal are putting the vulnerable at increased risk by potentially carrying it and passing it on.

Only this last weekend, people still not washing their hands in public toilets after going to the loo. Are they really so stupid and selfish?

Yesterday some arrogant twat/client came into our office for a meeting. Glibly announced he'd just come back from an Italian ski resort. I almost literally kicked him out of the door.

People really do need to wake up and smell the coffee. They're insanely selfish if they think they can just carry on as normal. I've got diabetes and lung impairment, my OH is having chemotherapy.

After yesterday, we've decided to ban meetings with our clients - we'd assumed clients would have the common sense to self isolate (like they've been told to) but apparently they're too stupid and selfish to do that, so we have to protect ourselves.

Our school aged kids are all at home as schools shut down here. Beyond that, business as usual. Will keep Easter Holiday.

ToughGuy · 11/03/2020 09:31

I have health issues. TBH I am not sure that I would survive if I got it thats even if I were to be treated.

Snuffkindle · 11/03/2020 09:33

Yes I am not making plans and am waiting to see how plans already made pan out. It annoys me that people are carrying on regardless. My manager is going on holiday on Sunday. She got bronchial pneumonia a year ago when she travelled. I have no idea why she would put herself at extra risk. All this just a bit of flu business really winds me up

lynsey91 · 11/03/2020 09:36

Me and DH are carrying on as normal. I don't work but DH does. He is self employed and cannot afford to just sit at home for who knows how long. He works in customers' homes and, at the moment, none of them have cancelled their jobs.

I don't tend to go out that much anyway when DH is working but I am still walking my dogs. We went food shopping yesterday and there were plenty of people about and no empty shelves.

The only thing we haven't done is book a holiday but that's because we don't want to lose the money. We usually book last minute but were actually going to be more organised this year!

We have a couple of concerts to go to and a trip to the theatre in London. We are not cancelling any of them

codenameduchess · 11/03/2020 09:37

I appreciate the financial markets are suffering, much like when brexit was going to end us all, and many business are suffering too I don't see the need to completely change mine or my children's lives at this stage. By not going out, shopping or eating or whatever as normal small businesses are going to suffer massively.

I'm on maternity leave so work isn't an issue, I'll still be paid my tiny mat pay regardless, dc1 is still going to school, I take the baby to a few groups and for walks, food shop as normal.... the first case was confirmed in our town yesterday though so things may change if gatherings are restricted. My dh has been told to bring his laptop home every night as contingency but I can't see that happening anytime soon, same for school closures.

chocolateandpinkgin · 11/03/2020 09:39

@ElderAve
I dont think the Marathon will be postponed. If it doesn't happen, it will be cancelled altogether. They simply won't be able to secure another date to close the roads

Yep you are right. I know other marathons/events are being postponed but London is literally the biggest marathon in the world. It takes them the whole year just to organise it and sort all the road closures and just the general logistics of the day. There's no way it would be rearranged, it would just have to be cancelled which would be a massive shame (particularly as it's the 40th anniversary) but it is what it is I guess. People's health has to come first. I do feel so sorry for all the people currently training though and under so much uncertainty.

Had to speak to the kids this morning as we are due to go to Butlins in the Easter and a few Merlin trips out over the next few weeks and although we will still be going if everything is open, we are aware that there is a likelihood that things may be closed.

We booked Butlins a year ago and is our annual family holiday we have with just us and we all look forward to it so much so there were a few tears. But I just wanted to prepare them as they are so excited and ask Alexa every morning how many days!

It is a horrible feeling of limbo. I am not particularly worried even though I work in London at a hospital with 6 confirmed cases. We will get full sick pay, none of us are in the at risk groups and we work shifts around the kids school so one of us is always at home so won't need to take time off. But it feels like just existing at the moment and waiting to see what will happen! Not making any more plans for the time being!

swishthecat · 11/03/2020 09:40

But what the hell are we supposed to do? We can't all just stay at home?

janinlondon · 11/03/2020 09:40

We have just added flights to our early suummer villa holiday, to make it ATOL protected.....

Babytigerrr · 11/03/2020 09:40

yes, a little. This is the only time i have been glad i havent got a (abroad) holiday booked. We have one booked in the UK for June but hopefully things will be ok by then!

I'm trying not to spend any unnecessary cash as well in case i have to take unpaid time off work, though i will try anything to avoid that!

Nothing else has really changed though, still sending DC to nursery, still coming to work, probably go for a walk at the weekend etc, nothing unusual in the day to day stuff if you see what i mean.

I am having to book my online shop a week in advance though!

SlippedRoofTile · 11/03/2020 09:41

I'm job hunting. I have a holiday booked in May. I'm not holding back!

thegreylady · 11/03/2020 09:42

We are getting a new car tomorrow and driving up to Yorkshire on Friday for a wedding. It will mean two nights in a hotel. We hope to avoid motorway service stations and will take travel cups with us.
We are both old (76 and 83) , have sanitiser gel, wipes etc and feel we should stay at home but the bride is terminally ill...

Scbchl · 11/03/2020 09:47

I'm not feeling in limbo at all. There is only 27 cases in Scotland..There was one in my county announced a week or so ago and that's not grown. I dont think Scotland will be in lockdown in two weeks when we have such low figures.

We have a concert in two weeks, a wedding to italy in June (not sure that will go ahead) my daughter has her exams, she is going to majorca with her friend end of June and we are booked to go July too. And we also had a holiday already booked for October.

I'm getting on with life as normal until anything changes.

Krong · 11/03/2020 09:49

Not at all, I'm going long haul next week! Unless they literally close the borders I'm going. I'll be sensible of course, but I'm not ill.

Oakmaiden · 11/03/2020 09:52

Not on hold as such - but it has a good deal of uncertainty.

I am a Rainbow and Brownie leader, I operate photofinish at athletics matches, am applying for jobs in secondary schools, my daughter dances and acts has has shows coming up in the next few months, as well as her GCSEs - and although I am planning and preparing for all these things as normal, I don't actually know if they are going to happen. But I am mostly carrying on as normal until I know for certain that I can't. Think I would go mad otherwise.

crazydiamond222 · 11/03/2020 09:52

It annoys me that people are carrying on regardless

There is a balance to be stuck. If we all stop doing everything businesses will fold, there will be mass unemployment and people will not be able to afford to feed themselves. Most of the population will eventually get the virus anyway but we need to spread it out so the nhs can cope.

We are continuing with our extension - knock through happens this week and we will be without a kitchen for 2 months which will be a nightmare if we catch the virus but what is the alternative - layoff the builders who then will loose income and put off the knock through for 2 years until there is a vaccine?

Evenquieterlife33 · 11/03/2020 09:53

Yes, I have a large mass event on Friday in London- I’m twitchy- do I go or not?? We have been invited to another at the end of the month and my initial reaction was - we can’t accept we don’t know what will be happen wing by then. My son is supposed to be traveling with school last week of half term, to a place where they now have cases and a school is shut. I don’t know what to do. I’m at the point where being on hold might mean just decide to opt out. Our school have apparently mentioned to some parents they may close for an extra week AFTER Easter which makes no sense to me, before would seem much more sensible.

Kazzyhoward · 11/03/2020 09:57

but I'm not ill

Like I say, selfish.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 09:58

Not on hold, but taking a bit more care in daily life

The gym emailed to tell us about how they are using sprays on the gym equipment and to wash our hands etc and classes still going on, it is important for me to go for my mental health and fitness, so just taking more care there.

DC still going to school etc, also washing hands, DH too, no holiday plans as yet though but that is normal for us this time of year. Maybe later in summer will see how it goes

Finding it slightly tricky with grandparents wanting to see us and the DC when one of them has a lung condition and how to deal with that situation. Maybe can see them but just not kiss / hug as usual, I guess.

Orangeblossom78 · 11/03/2020 09:59

There is a balance to be had between 'life on hold' and 'continuing as normal' isn't there

NeckPainChairSearch · 11/03/2020 10:01

I don't feel necessarily that life is on hold, but we're living it differently I suppose. I'm realistic enough to know that making travel plans to go abroad is unwise - the travel landscape in a month, two months etc. will be vastly different to the one we have now.

cologne4711 · 11/03/2020 10:03

I know other marathons/events are being postponed but London is literally the biggest marathon in the world

I don't think it is. And it's not the biggest event in the UK - the Great North Run is bigger. I still think a postponement is an option. But we'll see.

PinkMonkeyBird · 11/03/2020 10:05

No, I'm still going on my holiday abroad just after Easter. Unless the Government locks down the country, I'm still going ahead.

meercat23 · 11/03/2020 10:05

Last year, for health reasons, we had to cancel all three of the trips we had planned for spring and summer. We had just rebooked for this year when Covid-19 exploded everywhere. Fortunately we have booked everything with the ability to cancel so wont loose out financially but it is looking as if we wont make the trips this year either. It does feel like a very strange time.
