Skiing in France- WWYD?

Due to go next weekend, Haute Savoie region. Massive hotel so hoards of people. They've organised temperature testing and strict hygiene measures but obviously there's lots of people close together, v v close to the N Italy border.

FCO are still saying all OK. We're lowish risk and can self-isolate on return. I'm more worried about being stuck there on lockdown than anything else. WWYD?

I just got back from skiing in Haute Savoie and was v worried before going. It was fine and we had a great time, although I now have a mild virus! We decided to go ahead as we were in a chalet with just the we friends we were going with.
Your circumstances are very different..the crowded accommodation would worry me. I think HS has the second highest number of cases. I probably wouldn't go tbh, sorry!

I'm in Haute Savoie right now, and it's pretty normal other than large gatherings and festivals etc are cancelled.

Thanks for the feedback- I think I'm just going to watch and wait this week...

Watching and waiting here too. We’re due to go on 28th March. Personally I suspect they will have closed the French ski resorts by then, they involve too many incomers and too many people in close proximity (queues, lifts, bars, ski schools etc) and it’s the end of the season anyway so not as much to lose. Italian resorts were closed yesterday and France seems to be only a couple of weeks behind Italy.

As to the risk... well we have booked a self catering apartment and private lessons so relatively self contained but there’s still the flights, airport and ski lifts plus eating out at lunch... any holiday is a risk at the moment really unless it’s on a private jet to a private island (I know what I’d be doing if I was an A lister!!). I would probably still take the risk though as we live in a city here so no different, but as I say I expect the decision will be out of our hands.

We're due to go 28th March too & just resigning myself to the fact that it likely won't happen. Will be gutted though.

We’re due to go to three valleys area 4th April. Ideally FCO will have advised against travel so that we get the cost back on insurance, but suspect that they won’t do and so if the resort is closed we’ll be screwed....ah well

Orangeblossom78 · 10/03/2020 14:26

I was there at half term, but we stayed in a gite, so not with others around. We did get a nasty flu type virus a week or so after though so much that Dh needed some antibiotics in the end to clear a chest infection...but this was before the cases started nearby

cathyandclare · 10/03/2020 15:48

I think everyone going later will get more clarity- this weekend the French Gov and the FCO may not have changed anything.

Orange- hope your DH is healthy and well now. i always think gondolas and cable cars are potentially petri dishes for infections.

Checked insurance and cancellation policy and we're not covered unless the FCO or French advise against travel. It's AI, so ski passes, food, wine etc etc etc all paid for- two of us, so well over 2.5k.

No cases in or around the resort at the moment, but obviously loads of people coming from around Europe risk spreading the infection. Head says no, heart says it would be lovely to get out into the fresh air, onto the slopes and away from the news and social media.

In case people haven’t seen the news, all french ski resorts will close today for the rest of the season.
I can only hope the FCO issue a “all but essential” travel so we can claim on insurance

Tbh I wasn’t going to go anyway as think the situation has escalated a lot in the past few days and suspect my annual leave will be cancelled anyway

cathyandclare · 16/03/2020 16:07

It closed just in time for us, many many people fighting their way home. I really think the decision should have been made 24 hours earlier to prevent 30k people travelling.

Battling with insurance at the moment.
