AIBU to think a lot of the "panic" is being driven by people hoping for some time off work?

The rational voices seem to be coming from those who have important jobs that would have to be done anyway or those who wouldn't be paid for time off. However, there seems to be a large contingent desperate to stir this up enough so the government is forced to close schools etc and give everyone a nice holiday. Which may be good for some but will be a disaster for others.

My personal opinion is that schools will close, probably for a few days before the Easter holidays to try and get the message across that travel should be restricted during the holidays but it's far too early to impose those restrictions now, as by the time it really matters, people will have had enough and be breaking whatever rules are in place.

I think some people also my be realising they might me out of a job.

  • Might be.

Of course. Or wanting to save money and time on commuting to work, so wanting to work from home.

And then there are people who think if the schools can close, they can have lovely extended holidays with their dc, forgetting that it won't work like that.

I do wish they'd close swimming pools though. I usually swim on Monday evenings but opted not to go yesterday especially as COVID-19 has been found at a leisure centre about 5 miles from me.

Yes. I think so too.

If we do go under quarantine I think it will be around easter when it's least disruptive economically and makes more sense timing wise.

I think panic is being driven by people who pay attention to the need to slow this virus down, to give our health service has a snowball's chance of coping.

If working from home and avoiding busy places slows it down and reduces mortality (which it does), then why wouldn't you?

If everyone who could stay home did, then those who have to go out will be safer.

nellodee · 10/03/2020 07:49

Oh ffs. Yes, we're making it all up because we want some time off work.

Have you never heard of ringing in and saying you have D&V? It's a lot easier than making up an entire pandemic, you know.

Grasspigeons · 10/03/2020 07:58

Yes if we all do what we can do then those that have no choice are in a better position. The schools are tricky because front line workers have children - but if it goes round a school the teachers will be ill anyway. Schools here have closed from norovirus before when so many staff were hit at the same time. So the government needs a plan for 'what do we do with all the children of essential workers' even if schools in general stay open.

Haha.

Just wait.

Some people are using the panic for time off but dont forget some of the more extreme preppers getting the fanny gallops because there fantasies are coming true.
Some posters using it as an excuse to whinge about the evil Tories.
Not seen anyone fit Brexit and trans in there yet but give it time.

I was thinking the same thing op.
Stay off work if you have a mild cold, yes but what pay do you get? SSP is about 90 quid a week. Not everyone has a great job with full sick pay.

Not really if I can’t work then I can’t earn as I’m self employed. I’m worried but not panicking.

IsisCam · 10/03/2020 10:12

I think it’s the opposite - those for whom quarantine would cause significant disruption due to the nature of their work prefer to ignore the seriousness of the situation. It’s human, I guess.
