Poorly kids - WWYD

My 8 year old came home from school looking awful. Took her temperature and it was 38.7. She said she has a sore throat and had been coughing at school.

I then noticed the baby had cold hands. Took her temperature and it is 38.1.

We haven’t been in an at risk area in the last 14 days or been in contact with a confirmed case so NHS 111 says to do nothing. Normally I would say winter bug BUT we were in Belgium/the Netherlands at half term and DH came home with some terrible lurgy which we were joking was the Coronavirus.

So WWYD? Doesn’t seem possible to get tested but don’t want to spread to others if it is Coronavirus...

Re baby. Cold hands with a temp could be a sepsis indicator so I would definitely be getting some advice for them

gamerwidow · 09/03/2020 17:34

yes cold hands and temp would make me go to UCC to rule out meningitis.
Re: eldest my DD has those symptoms last week which turned out to be bacteria tonsillitis.

Fishlegs · 09/03/2020 17:36

How old is the baby?

LondonUnited · 09/03/2020 18:07

Baby is 8 months old. I’m not too worried about the cold hands as all my DC do that with a temperature and after some ibuprofen she is now happily waving some toys around.

Kids temperatures half an hour ago were 39.2 & 38.8 though. I’m assuming a virus as they both have it, but unsure how worried to be bearing in mind the possibility of Coronavirus!

Call 111 and get some professional advice.

HappyHammy · 09/03/2020 18:12

Those temperatures are high, ring 111 and ask for medical advice. Don't assume they have a virus, it could be anything. Hope they feel better soon.

Fishlegs · 09/03/2020 18:13

My understanding is that no-one will test the children as they don’t meet the criteria. Have you called 111 to discuss? I’d also be worried about the baby (not because of Coronavirus, just because of the symptoms you’ve described) although happily playing is a good sign.

Selfsettling3 · 09/03/2020 18:14

Definitely get it checked out. My oldest was running around the garden the morning seeming fine after I had been up all night with her trying to control her temp so I thought her oral antibiotics had kicked in but 2 hours later she was admitted hospital for 3 days of IV antibiotics. Kids mask illness well.

Selfsettling3 · 09/03/2020 18:15

They could have a none corna related bacterial infection that needs treating.

todayisnottuesday · 09/03/2020 18:18

Temperatures that high are very common in young children as their hypothalamus is still immature.

Keep an eye on them, and give regular call etc. Coronavirus should not be your worry here though, sepsis is far more deadly so it's signs of that you need to be alert to (very high temp/ breathing rate, decreased urine output, non blanching rash).

Hope they feel a bit better soon, kids are generally very resilient though Flowers.

Lifesabeach86 · 09/03/2020 19:06

No children under 10 have caught the coronavirus

Lifesabeach86 · 09/03/2020 19:08

Actually forget what I said, I read it somewhere but that was a week ago and you can't believe everything you read

MulaDd1 · 09/03/2020 19:11

No children under ten have died as of now, but they have caught it.

Jerseygaly · 09/03/2020 19:15

A small percentage do get it just generally not that ill.
You are at day 14 of coming back and also could have got it from dad.
You could do the online check .But will probably only look at high risk countries.

Selfsettling3 · 10/03/2020 09:27

@Lifesabeach86bthe youngest person to get it was only a few days old

Just by way of update the baby seems fine but my 8yo’s temperature was 39.5 this morning. GP didn’t want us to come in but we had a telephone consultation and they seem happy that it’s a viral sore throat so no need to worry for now...
