Can I bring just a bar of soap or liquid soap in a zip lock bag and a bottle of water to rinse them or does it need to be hot water?
I'm thinking if I've been shopping and get back to car I could do this...bit concerned that I cant get any hand gel

If you are that concerned take a thermos of hot water and leave it in the car, just be careful not to burn yourself.

dementedpixie · 09/03/2020 16:40

Dont think water temperature matters tbh

SpeckledyHen · 09/03/2020 16:42

The best water is warm . If it’s too hot or too cold it’s uncomfortable to wash them for the 20 recommended seconds . If you can stand cold water for that length of time you will be fine.

Set up a washing station in your car boot. Flask of hot water, bottle of cold, small bowl for washing, penis beaker (just in case), soap, towels and a container for the dirty water....

Or just do what you can with wet wipes and wash hands when you get home!

I cant believe I didn't think of a flask of waterHmm great idea thanks!

@starfishmummy Grin

Flask sounds a good idea but don’t burn yourselves. Reminds me of music festival days sorting contact lenses.

Wish they had some hand sanitizer out and about the shops etc!

The temperature of the water shouldn't make too much difference. I remember a QI episode where they mentioned that for water to be warm enough to kill germs it would need to be scalding/boiling. The thing that removes the germs is the physical rubbing of your hands and then the rinsing the germs away.

So yes to bottled water and liquid handwash. The only issue is handling the bottle of water and liquid soap packet again afterwards. Oh also take something to dry your hands with (e.g. paper towel).

I take a bottle of soapy water with me on days out in the car. Always have since I had toddlers who liked to hand plant in mud.

I'm pretty sure it has to be running water to ensure your hands are rinsed properly of the soap and therefore bacteria/viruses. Although I guess it's better than nothing.

PickAChew · 09/03/2020 19:17

It doesn't have to be warm. It's not like you can put your hands in water hot enough to sterilise anything without scalding yourself.

ElderAve · 09/03/2020 19:23

Unless the water is hot enough to kill bacteria (over 60 degrees, so no it's not if you're washing your hands in it) it makes no difference if the water is hot or cold. Warm water feels nicer and helps the soap lather but doesn't actually make any difference to how clean your hands are.

You can buy hand gel here. 500 ml bottle plus smaller top up pump bottles of 100ml. It's 60-70% alcohol, tea tree oil and rosemary oil, both of which are anti viral. It smells lovely and doesn't dry your hands out. Mine has just arrived (thank god)
