Does anyone have a cruise booked?

We have a Mediterranean cruise booked for September which we arranged last year (with travel insurance). The deposit has been paid and the balance us due mid June.
I really can't see us going, having seen the palava with the Princess Cruise on the news but dh thinks we should wait and see what happens over the next couple of months.
Anyone else in the same predicament?

If you don't have to pay anything before June, I wouldn't do anything about it at the moment and see how things are in June.

We are going on a cruise in July. Currently we are working on the assumption that we are going. However, we have checked with the company and if necessary we can change the booking and go at a later date. Maybe you should call your company and ask what their policy is?

My aunt is going on a cruise around the Caribbean on Friday! She's going with two friends who are flying in from Europe. I'm really worried about her going Sad

DeadBod · 11/03/2020 18:51

I keep checking on the company's website for the latest updates. I've noticed that they have extended the final payment dates for earlier cruises, down from 90 days beforehand to 60 days.
We've got 3 months before we need to pay the balance (4 if they extend) so we're keeping an eye on it for now.
It sounds like cruise companies are doing thier best to retain business in these worrying times.

We go beginning of April and I'm so worried. It's a Canaries cruise. Tui/Marella won't give any update or options.
Now it's been declared a pandemic, I'm hoping their hand will be forced and we can cancel without penalty. Such a shame, but I'd much rather be safe and not go now.

NotReve · 11/03/2020 18:53

We’re due to go on Tuesday...... no idea what to do!

Greenkit · 11/03/2020 18:55

We have one booked to the Baltics in June, we have just been upgraded and given extra money...

We are going to go, unless told othewise

MinesaPinot · 11/03/2020 19:22

We were very pleased to see the statement from P & O as it gives us a great deal of reassurance. We are going to leave it until the weekend but feel that we will defer and book something for next year, probably around our anniversary in September.

Pootle40 · 11/03/2020 19:27

Yes as part of two week holiday in Florida in October so not worrying at this stage. Out of my control so no point thinking about it until balance due in July. I think we will see all cruise lines doing more cleaning and people need to take responsibility for washing their hands.

Blankscreen · 11/03/2020 19:30

Thing is you're not losing the money if you don't go this weekend. You've already paid the money has gone.

You're losing the experience. Only you know if it's worth the risk.

Fwiw we were meant to be going on a cruise at Easter. £13k. We are not going we've deferred it but still lost £5k in flights /hotel

DeadBod · 11/03/2020 19:46

@NoTreve where are you supposed to be going? What a dilemma for you.
@Blankscreen I know what you mean by saying the money has gone but it's a lot of money to pay out and gain nothing. Some people may have been saving for a long time for a special holiday and might not be able to afford another cruise.
I'm also hoping the pandemic announcement might mean that people will get thier holiday money back.

@DeadBod going to Portugal and Spain; Spain seems to be getting worse and I’m worried about the ship itself! It’s great we can transfer to a future cruise but means we won’t have a refund to spend on doing anything for the next two weeks we’ve booked off. I know you shouldn’t put that above health though...

Hoghgyni · 11/03/2020 22:58

"Blankscreen" I see it in exactly the same way. I haven't lost anything, but the new Carnivsl Ts & Cs are very reassuring.

On a side note, Bergen & Stavanger have banned all cruise passengers from disembarking until further notice. That has potentially stuffed the maiden season of Iona as it can't go elsewhere. I think Carnival Group have some huge issues to deal with, but are trying to do whatever they can under the circumstance.

PondLover · 11/03/2020 23:04

No, but my SILs and their families were leaving on a Caribbean cruise in a fortnight — they pulled out today, and are gutted, but didn’t want to potentially risk being stuck on a virus-infected ship indefinitely.

NotReve · 12/03/2020 16:18

We’ve decided not to go now, don’t think it’s worth the risk.

DeadBod · 12/03/2020 22:00

@NotReve have you delayed it for another time? It's probably a good call as you'd maybe be on edge for the full time worrying about what could happen Sad

MIL heard yesterday that over 70's shouldn't travel. Their cruise in next month in the med, but they haven't heard a thing from their cruise line! Both their insurance and the cruise line numbers don't answer and they have no info on their website!

Egghead68 · 13/03/2020 06:15

Boris Johnson said yesterday that over-70s and those with relevant pre-existing conditions should not go on cruises.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 13/03/2020 06:21

Planning on going on one in September (if I’m ok - underlying health issues). We were going to go in may but decided that’s probably too soon to call it. A friend had booked a Med summer cruise & got a good deal as she knows she can cancel if necessary.

Parkmama · 13/03/2020 06:36

We are due on P&O Iona in August around the Norwegian Fjords: Our balance is due in May by which time I think we'll have a clearer view on the situation. As they have said we can transfer up to 48 hours before sailing, I think we'll probably pay and do just that if it looks unlikely. Really tricky to make a decision just yet. P&O said they will screen passenger symptoms but if you're in the incubation period and not showing any, that's going to be hard 🤷‍♀️

VanCleefArpels · 13/03/2020 07:30

@Elouera I think give it time for them to absorb this news - I’m meant to be going with an oldie too and plan to go into travel agent next week to discuss what happens now
