Covid
Yoga, fitness classes etc. Would you still go?
BrokenBrit · 09/03/2020 09:17
I know it’s a ‘first world problem’ but I have health conditions that these classes really help me manage.
However it’s also 10- 20 people in a small studio using the same mats and blocks.
Would you still be going at this time?
Jollitwiglet · 09/03/2020 09:27
I do aerial fitness and still go. I just use hand sanitizer as soon as I have finished and then use soap and water as soon as I get home. I have a joint condition so exercise is really important and this really keeps my muscle tone up which in turn helps with the pain
Hugglespuffed · 09/03/2020 09:30
I am not currently stopping gym classes etc... but I suppose if it becomes really widespread in my area then I will. I think catching it is really likely anyway and I plan to lead my life as normally as possible until the government advises otherwise.
Hugglespuffed · 09/03/2020 09:31
I use an online booking system for exercise and swim classes and have not noticed a drop in number, it is still difficult to get on and not often last minute spaces. I guess time will tell if people start slowing down on these classes.
Florianna · 09/03/2020 09:37
I must admit I've not gone to Aqua Tone this morning - I'm not too worried about in the pool, bit the changing rooms are making me feel a bit squeamish at the moment, especially with already being immunocompromised.
Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 10:17
I have skipped my aqua class today same as above, the changing rooms making me a but squeamish, thinking of taking my own mat to yoga instead of using the communal ones though and using antic on hands after.
I have to say ours has grim toilets atm (local sports centre) which also puts me off a bit. They need to sort it out.
i use a swipe card for entry though and no need to speak to people / exchange cash etc makes it a bit easier
Marilynmansonsothereye · 09/03/2020 10:21
You think catching is really likely hugglespuff ?
I have a pole class tonight and a gymnastics one tomorrow. Not planning on not going.
Frazzled2207 · 09/03/2020 10:36
I'm going to an exercise class later today but I'll just be in and out and showering at home. I take my sons swimming and I must admit the thought of the changing rooms with all the kids in there just being kids, worries me a bit.
Hugglespuffed · 09/03/2020 10:57
@Marilynmansonsothereye it depends where you read.. I'm not worried massively but everytime I go on the 'worried about CV tbread' (which I find is actually really informative) it makes me think that there is a high chance that lots of us will get it. Unless people are lucky enough to stay at home throughout the whole of this then I think lots will catch, especially if we follow Italy.
But because I don't know how long this will go on for and I have to earn a living, I will be carrying on as normal.
bengalcat · 09/03/2020 11:02
I'm carrying on as normal . I'll stop if at any time the gym closes its doors .
chillychicken · 09/03/2020 11:05
I'm still going to the gym 3x a week at the moment. I guess if/when the situation changes then that'll change. For now though, I'm carrying on as normal.
LittleMissGrumpyGrot · 09/03/2020 11:09
I'm still going to a Pilates. My instructor is sanitising all the mats and equipment every day.
Sosososotired · 09/03/2020 11:09
Yes, in fact I’ve been to my fitness class this morning. But I use my own mat, don’t use a shared mat anyway as pretty grim at the best of times
ellanwood · 09/03/2020 11:09
I'm still going. I love yoga. Just bring your own mat and blanket and spray the blocks with dettol spray before use. You could wear a mask too if you feel nervous.
ellanwood · 09/03/2020 11:10
Agree with @Sosososotired that shared mats are gross. I used to use shared mats and they always stank of men's feet. Put me right off!
Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 11:13
Sorry the thought of a mask in yoga made me smile! No need for that surely is there?
We do the alternate nostril breathing in my yoga, not sure that is ok with 'not touching face' hmm. Will just use hand gel. before and after
I might do some yoga at home. It has got very busy at the gym after Christmas. I hear Yoga with Adrienne online is good. Also have a pilates roller and hand weights in case need to exercise at home.
DreamingofSunshine · 09/03/2020 11:20
I've just bought an exercise ball so I can do my physio exercises at home. I'm happy going to my PT in his own gym as I know he cleans it thoroughly and it's his own gym, so not hundreds of people going through the door.
My normal gym is one of the cheap ones and I've been put off by the uncleanliness of it for a while, and I don't like the keypad entry system.
puds11 · 09/03/2020 11:21
I’ve just done one. We were asked to disinfect the mats after if that helps @BrokenBrit
bengalcat · 09/03/2020 11:23
Although a minority of people bring their own mats at my gym we also use equipment such as balls and bands . All you need to do is wash your hands after the class .
daisychain01 · 09/03/2020 11:35
However it’s also 10- 20 people in a small studio using the same mats and blocks.
You've got to do a risk assessment based on your health condition and the set up of your classes.
I'd never use a shared yoga mat, at the best of times (you could pick up a varucca which are very contagious) and I Zaflorad mine this weekend, as I hadn't cleaned it for ages to my shame.
Our teacher said she was going to make us do lions breathe at last weeks class, but in view of CV she cancelled that, and said she'll modify any poses or breathing so they are CV friendly as much as possible.
The benefits of exercise outweigh the risks and you have to hope that if someone is exhibiting symptoms or has been to a high risk area, they will stay away and be responsible.
Orangeblossom78 · 09/03/2020 11:48
I picked up a yoga mat in TK Maxx, they also had blocks and things, Or could order online from Amazon. It was not expensive and rolls up to carry with an arm handle thing
ShirleyPhallus · 09/03/2020 12:00
Do people usually NOT wash their hands and use the sanitizer for the equipment when they go?! All those sweaty people handling the equipment is enough for me to make sure washing hands is the first thing I do when I get to the changing rooms
daisychain01 · 10/03/2020 20:22
The normal etiquette in the gyms I've been to is that the person creating the sweat is the one to anti-bac the equipment down, as soon as they've finished (that includes spin bikes in studios), so by rights, no - people probably didn't wash their hands or antibac the equipment etc beforehand.
Don't forget this virus is unprecedented in that people now feel extremely vulnerable having never been exposed to it in their life, and in the knowledge if they catch it, it can be extremely nasty. Before CV, people's hygiene and cleanliness was suboptimal. To a lot of people, washing their hands numerous times a day is a very novel experience.
Pipandmum · 10/03/2020 20:25
I bring my own mat but the teacher has provided alcohol wipes to clean the other mats after every use. Some elderly participants have decided not to come, however.
It depends on your conditions but I'm still going.
caulkheaded · 10/03/2020 20:28
Just back from a class and will go swimming tomorrow. Will continue until there is advice not to.
