Supermarket making possible coronavirus carrier work

Was in supermarket today and all the checkout ladies were really upset and telling customers how worried they were as their collegue had come back from Coronavirus high risk zones and was still coming in despite warnings from the government to self isolate as they won’t pay her two weeks of leave. I am disgusted at them as workers hsve bills to pay and supermarket does not care about them potentially infecting vulnerable people.

I wonder if the "high risk" zone was somewhere like Rome where you only have to self-isolate if you have symptoms. People do not understand Italian geography.

I doubt a supermarket would be this stupid, really.

YANBU just because this basic measure will undoubtedly mean any efforts to delay the spread of the virus until warmer weather/vaccines can be used will be completely scuppered because no one will voluntarily starve/make themselves homeless for the greater good.

All companies should be mandated to pay sick pay or be fined substantially for failing to implement government advice without substantial detriment to their staff. It may well be that this particular supermarket isn't guilty of what has been suggested by their staff, but I've read about plenty of businesses that have already said they won't pay people self-isolating.

I'm pretty ambivalent about catching the virus, but understand why people with vulnerability are terrified at the prospect of it spreading on Spanish Flu levels.

Where is this? And where has she been?

HoneyBee03 · 08/03/2020 21:52

Had she been to a place like Iran, Wuhan or a lockdown city in Italy? If not then I believe the advice is to only self isolate if you have symptoms. I have friends who have recently got back from Northern Italy and Thailand and they're all just carrying on as usual as per government advice.

This thread would also be better suited to the Coronavirus board.

Maybe the person in question should apply for a job in your supermarket, I'm thinking that maye they aren't all the same.

Are you quite sure that the coworkers have their facts right?

AlexaShutUp · 08/03/2020 22:30

I've seen loads of people on here complaining about people failing to self-isolate, but usually, when you ask for details, it turns out that they've been somewhere which only requires them to self-isolate if they are experiencing symptoms. The guidance really isn't well understood, it would seem.

I doubt that many employers would allow people to self-isolate on full pay if this was not based on government guidelines.
