The FCO/government have said travel to Northern Italy is forbidden however easyJet are not offering refunds because the airport's are open!

We're due to go on Thursday and were waiting until tomorrow to change our flights but due to this news, I'm guessing it's gonna be really hard to get through.

We paid by credit card so does anyone know if we'll be able to get a refund from them?

Really shitty of easyJet, really shitty.

Surely you could claim on your travel insurance?

HappyHammy · 08/03/2020 21:01

What airport, I think Milan is closed.

Cohle · 08/03/2020 21:03

Surely it will be covered by your travel insurance given it's now against FCO advice to travel there?

Frazzled2207 · 08/03/2020 21:03

I would hope that perhaps easyjet will now finally cancel the flights which should mean an automatic refund.
Agree that it's ridiculous to expect you to travel - they just don't want to refund you. They cancelled a flight of ours a few months back and they didn't want to reimburse me for that either.

StrawberryFizz26 · 08/03/2020 21:03

I'll call my travel insurance tomorrow. Fingers crossed

easyJet are still flying.
The airports in Milan are still open.
Some airlines are choosing not to fly into Malpensa.
Travel insurance is unlikely to pay unless you have a cast iron covering all bases policy unless there is an actual ban on flights going in. In that case the airline refunds.

Hugglespuffed · 08/03/2020 21:08

I assume that this is what travel insurance for?
I can see why easy jet aren't cancelling flights if the airport is still open. You only have to look at how quickly other travel companies have collapsed in the last year. They need to keep money coming in where possible.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 08/03/2020 21:10

Travel Insurance won't pay just because you decide not to travel.

StrawberryFizz26 · 08/03/2020 21:19

I'm not choosing not to travel. I'm following official government advice.....

I know, but it won't count probably. Not if the airline is still flying into there.
Things may change over the next few days but your policy should already make it clear what chance you have. If it's a good solid one you might be OK.
Is it Malpensa?

StrawberryFizz26 · 08/03/2020 21:28

It's shit really, easyJet will hopefully bow down to the public pressure & offer refunds!!

Yes, it's Malpensa. My travel insurance is via my bank so will need to give them a call tomorrow. We were going to change the flights tomorrow anyway. Hopefully I'll be able to get through to do that & they don't put the fairs up!

On ITV they've just announced Venice airport closed to other than domestic flights.

Frazzled2207 · 08/03/2020 22:24

OP - guardian is now reporting that easyjet IS cancelling flights to northern italy
A spokesperson said: “Following a decree issued by the Italian authorities implementing further restrictions for anyone living in Lombardy and 14 other central and northern provinces in Italy, easyJet in common with a number of other airlines is reviewing its flying programme to Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Venice and Verona airports for the period from now until April 3 2020.

“In the short term, we will be cancelling a number of flights to and from these destinations on Monday March 9.”

The airline said affected passengers would be informed of cancellations by email and text message.

“Customers on flights scheduled to operate to and from these airports will be given the option of a full refund or to change their flight,” the spokesperson added.

“We expect to continue to reduce the number of flights in and out of Milan Malpensa, Milan Linate, Venice and Verona airports in the period up to April 3 and will provide a further update on our schedule in due course.”

Wigeon · 08/03/2020 22:34

Following - we are booked Naples-London with Easyjet but not til 16 April, so waiting to see if the restrictions extend to the rest of Italy, not just N Italy.

Sorry to hear of everyone else’s holiday woes!

StrawberryFizz26 · 08/03/2020 23:37

Thanks frazzled* I'll check tomorrow

StrawberryFizz26 · 09/03/2020 09:11

frazzled where did you see that?! I can't see anything relating to it & easyjet website still saying flights are non refundable

Frazzled2207 · 09/03/2020 09:26

It was on guardian website last night. Also easyjet Twitter def official.

Knowhowufeel2 · 09/03/2020 09:32

@StrawberryFizz26, I'm flying to Geneva with Easyjet tomorrow. There's no restrictions atm, so again we wouldn't get our money back if we cancelled.
My oh wants to cancel and lose the flights (not covered) as he's worried about getting back into the UK, whereas I still think we should go as I hate the thought of wasting that money.
We've checked in, but will decide tomorrow whether we actually go or not.

It's so hard to know what to do.

StrawberryFizz26 · 09/03/2020 09:45

knowhow we'd decided to change our flights until later in the year and were waiting until tonight to see if the flight was cancelled or not. I think at the minute the least easyJet can do is not charge for changing the flights.

I guess you're going to lose your money cos you're after 48 hours! It's a right bloody pain.

I am covered by my travel insurance but DP didnt get it at the time of booking!

@StrawberryFizz26, we ended up going and had a lovely time.
The flight there was half empty and it rained all day, but we made the most of it.
The flight was much busier on the way back though, and many of those seemed to be returning from skiing.

The main thing I noticed was that most places had hand gel available to use at entrances, etc. Other than that most people seemed to be going about as normal, although we did see a few wearing face masks.

StrawberryFizz26 · 12/03/2020 11:12

knowhowufeel2 I'm really glad you had a nice time. Do you have to self isolate now? Our fights were cancelled yesterday, thankfully and we were able to change them free of charge to September. I'm glad I waited as easyJet were wanting to charge us another £400 to change them!!

OP posts:
Knowhowufeel2 · 13/03/2020 00:07

No, we've not been advised to self isolate, so are carrying on as normal. I take immuno-suppressants on a weekly basis and will continue to do so unless advised against it.

I'm glad that you have been able to change your flights foc and hope you have a lovely time in September.
