Dove soap - stupid question

whatnow40 · 08/03/2020 09:08

I've always used bars of soap instead of liquid or shower gel. I've avoided Dove because it's not actual soap - but a moisturising bar.

I've not been panic buying! But noticed Dove is getting left on the shelves, is Dove ok for all the extra hand washing? Or not? If it's ok, then I'd prefer to use it so that I can save my proper soap for the shower.

Oh hadn’t even thought about this. I use dove for sinks and bath. I refuse to go out to join mayhem. I’m thinking dove will have to do here.

I always thought moisturising bars cleansed like soap, but also moisturised to stop skin from drying out, so better for you than normal soap bars.

Ooh I was wondering exactly this, this morning. I've got a couple of bars Sefton soap which I've got by hand wash bowl but we've got Dove in the shower and all our stocks are Dove. I've got a feeling that it doesn't work against CV as it's not soap as such. I bought it originally as it had no animal ingredients in - not sure what to replace with now - I don't think there will be any dettol soap around for a while. I'd still use the Dove on my face but no point as a hygiene thing for hand washing I don't think.

No idea what Sefton soap is that was meant to say Dettol.

Any soap or detergent will do as it ruptures the cells to kill them

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 08/03/2020 09:31

It's a detergent so kills bacteria and viruses just as effectively. A lot of shower gels etc are also detergents and not technically soap

ChipsAreLife · 08/03/2020 09:32

Oh we use Dove, I assumed it was the same as other soap!

CoffeeBeansGalore · 08/03/2020 09:34

Found this info:

Doveuses a non-soapsurfactant called alkyl isethionate. It is a lot milder on the skin thansoap. ... normalsoap doesnotkill germs. these surfactantbarswork to rinse awaybacteriaas well or better thensoap does.

Ah that's brilliant, thanks. I found another bar of soap in the bathroom cupboard so I think I can avoid a panic buy just yet!! Wink

normalsoap doesnotkill germs

Lol what?

LipstickTaserrr · 08/03/2020 10:54

I had this panic after noticing the packaging actually says dove is not a soap. I've swapped back to handwash but my hands are so dry and itchy after multiple nappy changes on top of normal hand washing.

dementedpixie · 08/03/2020 10:57

It might not be soap but it is a detergent so should work perfectly well. Part of the way it works is that the water rinses the germs away too so it's not just the detergent action that helps

Not a stupid question, quite the opposite. I was just wondering exactly the same, and this thread came out top of my google search. Thanks OP, I’m reassured!
