New year new name /red cherries .I didnt "get it wrong " simply followed a link to GH from the Independent .thats all! .I assumed that while out somewhere and lack of soap /water might be of help to people finding it hard to track down anti bac ! It was never my intention to say its an alternative to good hand hygiene with soap and water !The recipe is theirs not mine FFS! Hopefully more stocks of anti bac should be along soon .

Reading comprehension not a strong point, eh OP?

Redcherries · 08/03/2020 13:22

I didn't say you got it wrong? The article got it wrong if its saying that that recipe would protect against the virus, you were just trying to help others!

That doesn't take away from the fact that articles like this, where there is no feed back to correct it (Unlike here) can create issues if people believe they have some sort of protection and take less precaution with hand washing due to this.

As I said upthread, its valuable to have conversations on these things as it gives a chance to discuss and identify the good and the bad in the media, encourage people to research and learn more and benefit from a collective wisdom/conversation.

Red Cherries Thank you .This was only my intention to help others ,who may not have been able to access any hand Sanitiser .Obviously soap and water are best ,but not always avaliable! I assume they mention vodka as it is more easily sourced .

I had an unbelievably frustrating "well something is better than nothing" argument with someone the other day. Hand sanitiser has to be at least 60% alcoholic to be effective against Coronavirus. Less than that, or alcohol-free = pointless. In fact it's more dangerous as people think they're fine when they aren't.

ARGH!!!!!!!!!

Dctyke · 10/03/2020 08:43

I’ve got all the ingredients however the aloe Vera get turns to ‘snow’ when I mix with the rubbing alcohol. If I leave it it settles into a lump at the base of the bottle. Any ideas please?

LangClegsInSpace · 10/03/2020 08:57

WHO guide:

www.who.int/gpsc/5may/Guide_to_Local_Production.pdf

They recommend 75% alcohol (+/- 5%)

You can get isopropyl alcohol on amazon.

HIGHLY FLAMMABLE

  • use in a well ventilated area
  • no naked flames anywhere near it
  • keep a lid on it as much as possible
  • clear up spills straight away
  • if you spill a lot, pour plenty of water on it before cleaning it up

A level English but spaces before punctuation marks eh Wink

These threads are so unhelpful. Pouring vodka on your hands isn't going to help anyone.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 10/03/2020 09:52

I work in a university and my mate in the chemistry department has made some kind of hand sanitiser in the lab. No idea what's in it!

Twenty2 · 10/03/2020 10:22

Lots of soap/cosmetics ingredients sites sell isopropyl alcohol, such as the Soap Kitchen (their P&P is quite high though). I bought some ages ago from eBay.

It's a virus.

fairlygoodmother · 10/03/2020 11:19

Dctyke I had the same issue with aloe vera gel clumping. I used vegetable glycerin instead.

Evilcat · 14/03/2020 16:00

So I have 500ml bottle of 70% rubbing alcohol and a 453g bottle of aloe Vera gel - could someone clarify what I'm supposed to do with them (and will it any use).

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 14/03/2020 16:10

Does anyone else remember the great recipes on here for making flavoured vodka in the dishwasher? Seem to recall you would pour a pack of fruit pastilles or similar into the bottle then put it in the dishwasher on a hot cycle and you got flavoured vodka?
Anyway that seems a better use of spare voddie.

Dctyke · 14/03/2020 16:23

I ordered 1ltr of rubbing alc two weeks ago at £6.99. Order never arrived and cash returned. Now for sale at £54.99. That about sums it up, ALL other suppliers similarly priced up too.

We're moving this over to the Coronavirus topic now. Flowers

Smirnoff?

Either use it as it is, or, if you want to eke it out a bit further, decant it into smaller bottles with a bit of aloe vera to dilute it slightly.

90ml of rubbing alcohol+ 10ml of gel will produce 100ml of 63% alcohol mixture.

@PotholeParadise. Thank you
