My friend who’s at high risk has gone to Italy. Should she self isolate when she returns?

Long story short......

Friend has cancer and lupus.

Booked flights to Japan which were cancelled.

She and husband rebooked and have gone to Rome. She’s actually quite poorly now with ear infection (burst ear drum 2 weeks ago) and a high temperature.

She’s due to come back on Monday and both her and husband are due to a attend a conference next Sunday.

Should they really be there or should they self isolate?

Do I say anything to her?

I'm sure she can decide for herself!
If you don't approve of her decision, then you can always isolate yourself from her.
Heck, I spoke to an Italian person yesterday ... should you even be reading this?????

Collision · 07/03/2020 22:59

@katy1213

Sarcastic much?

It was just a question.

I’m married to an Italian fgs.....🙄🙄

Just ignore me if you cannot say anything nice.

She sounds pretty ill OP😕
I can see why you're concerned 😕

Theowbh · 07/03/2020 23:01

But what’s it to you?

VivaLeBeaver · 07/03/2020 23:02

I don’t think Rome is in the high risk area. A journalist in Rome earlier said it was business as usual there but obviously worrying it may spread from the north. But currently I don’t think it’s worse than the U.K.

Saying that I probably wouldn’t visit. But know, according to official advice she doesn’t need to self isolate l

PotholeParadise · 07/03/2020 23:02

Tell her to use the 111 guidance on Monday.www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/advice-for-travellers/

Collision · 07/03/2020 23:02

I’m going to the same conference 🙄🤷🏻‍♀️

Do you think it's likely to be Corona though I know she has a fever but wouldn't she have a cough, or do you just think there's too high of a chance that she might have picked it up over there?

UYScuti · 07/03/2020 23:05

you never know... by next Sunday things might have deteriorated such that gatherings are banned and we will have to stay 5 m away from everyone 😳😲

KaptenKrusty · 07/03/2020 23:06

none of your business

Collision · 07/03/2020 23:08

I think I think she’s very poorly anyway and vulnerable to picking up everything around her and that she shouldn’t have gone abroad while she is so ill and it really wouldn’t surprise me if she did contract coronavirus and actually she should stay away from everyone and not attend the conference.

That’s what I think but who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ Like you say, things change quickly and I’m not a paranoid person who’s freaking out about coronavirus.

With respect, it his her decision. And keep your lip buttoned, or your door firmly closed on her return.

That is your decision.

Cuddling57 · 07/03/2020 23:09

How close to her are you? You could mention that you're worried about her - isn't that what a close friend would do?
Also if she has temperature now it may be more obvious what it is by Sunday?

PotholeParadise · 07/03/2020 23:09

If she goes through the online screening pathway, or calls 111 and answers the questions honestly, she might be advised not to go to the conference.

MamaKarmaLlama · 07/03/2020 23:12

I’m sure all Brits have been warned to self isolate returning from Italy, and that’s all over Italy not just the North...

OhMargo · 07/03/2020 23:14

I dislike the way some people think they can order another person's life like this.
Unless the OP is in fact the subject.

Collision · 07/03/2020 23:16

@ohmargo

It’s just a question.

I’m really not trying to order anyone’s life. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Rome is fine (or at least no more risky than Surrey!)

PotholeParadise · 07/03/2020 23:18

Currently it's self-isolate, however chipper you feel, if you're returning from northern Italy.

The rest of Italy, it depends how you actually feel. If you're well, you don't need to isolate. If you have symptoms, you should seek personalised guidance from the Coronavirus line.

KoalasandRabbit · 07/03/2020 23:19

If she has a fever then she should call 111 on her return and self-isolate for 14 days. 71 cases in Rome atm.

I think as an adult it's up to her, if you are worried for you all you can do is not attend the conference. If you are worried for her maybe say to her she should call 111 to get help. Would doubt its coronavirus but important she gets medical treatment if she's that sick.

KoalasandRabbit · 07/03/2020 23:21

Italian data is here.

amaryl · 07/03/2020 23:28

Surely her fever is because of the ear infection?

worldgonemad2020 · 07/03/2020 23:36

Current advice is if you return from Italian hotsports self-isolate regardless, from anywhere else in Italy, self isolate if you have symtoms however mild. I think she would be seen as having symptoms.

Meme05 · 07/03/2020 23:39

The advice is to self-isolate if coming from anywhere in Italy, not just the Northern parts.
