Coronavirus and school trip

Child about to go on a school trip to France in a few days, school seem to be going ahead but I’m getting increasingly anxious. I am trying to be level headed but am wondering what others think?

It’s in both France and the Uk, so what do you gain by staying here?

cologne4711 · 07/03/2020 12:37

I believe France has banned school trips for French schoolchildren so they may end up cancelling it.

Also the state of NRW in Germany has banned school trips to high risk areas.

MamaKarmaLlama · 07/03/2020 13:22

I guess that preventing unnecessary travel would help contain the outbreak. I wouldn’t necessarily be worried about my child as they are pretty healthy and supposedly low risk but worried they might carry it and pass it on to unsuspecting members of the family, some that are elderly or frail. I’m not sure if I’m being rational about it so just Touting for opinions.

We have a trip to France in March. We can’t cancel yet as official guidance is to still travel. The trip will go ahead until and unless government advice changes.

MamaKarmaLlama · 07/03/2020 17:46

Okay, that makes sense. I guess I will go with what the school advises. Thank you.

Agree that your son himself is probably low risk but I think that limiting travel to limit spread is very sensible.

Awkward1 · 07/03/2020 17:55

There are 2 children in uk in hospital with it. (Though could be quarantine I guess)
For me the concern is catching it at a point when nhs can't cope.
I wouldn't go
If he goes he could need to self isolate on return.

waterhorse123 · 07/03/2020 18:00

You have to think of the vulnerable members of society when you make this decision. So far, no one seems to be doing that. Okay, kids and younger people may be fine if they get it, but what about the people they come into contact with, what about the sick and the elderly? It's imperative to act without being selfish.

Evenquieterlife33 · 07/03/2020 18:04

I’d be concerned too. I’m not sure how they would deal with containing groups of children abroad if one child became ill amongst them for e.g. I wonder if they would isolate the group as they have with the cruise ships.

MamaKarmaLlama · 07/03/2020 19:06

@waterhorse123 if you read my comments you would see that’s the main reason I am concerned.

OP posts:
waterhorse123 · 07/03/2020 21:01

Well don't go then. Plain and simple. Why ask if that's what you're thinking? If you know it would be wrong and ill advised, don't bother to ask.

MamaKarmaLlama · 07/03/2020 21:46

I don’t necessarily think it’s wrong to travel but am aware of the possible problems and trying to do the right thing. I know lots of folk who wouldn’t hesitate to go and think I’m being dramatic. I guess I’m confused and weighing up the pros and cons. It’s a trip that my child is very excited about and the odds are they’ll be fine so I’m just working out how I feel about it and how it might impact on others. I’m sorry but It’s not a black and white, right/wrong situation. This is what this platform is for isn’t it, to gauge opinions? Typical dismissive mumsnet, you do know it doesn’t cost anything to be kind, especially when this situation can be very anxiety provoking. Thanks for your amazingly useful feedback. Hmm

@Evenquieterlife33 yes, o think that’s the other issue. If they had to quarantine the kids elsewhere. I’d be upset if they got stuck somewhere.

My DC is also due to go to France next week. The official guidance is that they can still travel. I’m concerned if they get stuck somewhere and quarantined.

We are in a v low risk area and they are travelling by ferry and coach to another v low risk area.

They’re going late next week so we’ll have to see if the situation changes. When is your DC due to travel OP?

Evenquieterlife33 · 08/03/2020 14:43

I’d say keep an eye on it, one of our kids is due to travel end of the month, I’m watching the area they are going to with interest. If it gets high they won’t be going. I’d hope the trip would be called off by the school anyway if it would be risky. No teachers want to be stuck out anywhere with other people’s kids x

MamaKarmaLlama · 08/03/2020 16:45

DC to travel this coming weekend. Watching and waiting. Lots of parents seem totally unconcerned but my pharmacist sibling said no way would she send her child. 😳

OP posts:
MamaKarmaLlama · 09/03/2020 22:44

I’m
Concerned about them being stuck there too and do not want to contribute to the spread.

Some people will advise you to go, others not to.

My son was returning from Northern Italy on a school trip the day they announced lockdown in certain cities. We didn't have full details and wondered if the airport would be impacted.

It was just a horrible feeling. Wondering if he'd be stuck there. Realising I might not see him as planned - that there may be disruption/quarantine.

So no, my son would not be leaving the country right now.

MamaKarmaLlama · 09/03/2020 22:56

I know. Such a difficult decision and not sure what to do for the best...

OP posts:
middleager · 09/03/2020 23:01

And only you can decide that.
You have a few more days and this may become clearer.

I don't think the school will cancel (colleague has child on school trip to Paris. They left today for EuroDisney just before its case was announced).

MamaKarmaLlama · 09/03/2020 23:04

Yes. I’m pretty sure school will not cancel here. They are following protocol and guess there will be no refunds but am not worried about losing the money.

OP posts:
middleager · 09/03/2020 23:10

It is a difficult decision.
We didn't know about the risk at the time and although he seems fine, his brother is asthmatic so we ran the risk of infecting him (and grandparents).

Plenty would take the risk. It may not even be on their radar.
Personally, I would not, because he felt a long way from home when lockdown was announced.

Good luck with your decision.

MamaKarmaLlama · 09/03/2020 23:58

Thank you. Just hope things become clearer!
