How do I know if she's ill with usual viral infection or corona?

So my 4th daughter is 8 and has started with a temp after school today. She said she's has a headache all day. I gave her paracetamol and it only worked for an hour or so and only brought her temp down slightly. I am not sure whether it's normal cold or this corona virus. She's the one of my children who's hardly ever ill, very rarely gets temps when now this. Do I ring anyone or just wait? I've just given her nurofen and see what that dies. She said her throat hurts a little and her head hurts and she feels cold. Not heard her cough yet.

Ring 111

Is Coronavirus confirmed in your area?

Has she been in close contact with someone I who had tested positive for covid-19?

If no, my recommendation is to sit tight unless you get to a ward.

Does she have a runny/stuffy nose? Any sneezing? My mum was in an affected area and called 111 when she started feeling ill and they said a runny nose and sneezing is a sign that it's probably NOT covid19.

I'd ring 111 to be safe, be prepared for a long time on hold and have your number to hand to tell them as they triage you and then get a nurse or doctor to ring you back.

I honestly mean this in the nicest possible way but does it really matter whether it’s a cold or CV? treat your daughters symptoms as needed (as you rightly have done with paracetamol) and seek help if she gets worse.

Cv affects most people in a mild way so there must be lots of people who have CV and don’t even realise it.

Hope your daughter feels better soon Flowers

There is a bug going around dc's school, there were 12 off in dd's class alone, all with fever, lethargy and a cough.

As a pp said there will be loads of people who have it without knowing.

purplebob · 06/03/2020 22:46

Why would it be corona virus?

Mine came home with a sore head and a temp so I gave her ibuprofen and thought no more of it.

Children aren't at risk even if it is covid 19. Give her calpol and care for her as you would with a virus normally. If her symptoms concern you, seek medical advice.

shortytrekker · 06/03/2020 23:02

They're carriers though, so whilst it's so reassuring to know children aren't at risk themselves, we need to be mindful that they could pass the infection on to those who are more vulnerable.

There's a virus going round of headaches and a bit of a temperature. Kids round here had it in half term and then the week after. I've had it mildly this week. Do what you'd do with any other virus, cold or flu. Keep them off school if they are not well enough to go.

Thanks everyone. We have not been abroad, haven't been in contact with anyone who's known to have the virus or suspected to have it. She did say one of her classmates went on holiday (only know this because this is the reason she couldn't attend my daughters party) and has come back but not sure where she went on holiday and nothings been mentioned in school about anyone having it. I live in greater Manchester so there has been a few cases. It's Just a worry because out of all my children she's the least one who gets ill

My ds is the same he caught a really nasty virus a few weeks ago. Hed never been this ill before and I'd never seen his temp that high before.
He had 3 trips to the doctor in a week with it, it took him 2 full weeks to properly recover.
I caught it as well and it completely wiped me out. 3 weeks later and I still haven't fully recovered.
Did you ring 111?

SophiaLarsen · 07/03/2020 20:32

DD aged 9 had very similar. Nasty headache, sore throat, temp, dry cough. However, not in CV area (yet). I think there is definitely something (not Covid19) also doing the rounds.
