Do you believe the Chinese government?

The source of the Coronavirus. One and a half billion people. Many cities overcrowded with millions of people living in intensely close proximity.

But no new cases outside of Hubei province?

Do you believe the Chinese? Even with the lockdown they've created, I just don't believe them at all.

Nope don’t believe them

IndianaMoleWoman · 06/03/2020 22:33

It seems highly improbable.

EdithHope · 06/03/2020 22:38

"Many cities overcrowded with millions of people living in intensely close proximity. " Where'd you get the idea that they're overcrowded? Are people in London overcrowded?

What's "intensely closer proximity"?

Whether they're telling the truth, they have managed to shut down and quarantine cities and millions of people. More than we have done or ever likely to do.

cantQuiteBeliveIt · 06/03/2020 22:40

I’ll be honest I think they have messed up to put it mildly
It’s clear that this ‘virus that is mild for most people’ is causing huge huge panic amongst governments. They seem to be saying one thing to try and reassure yet outing measures in place that seem excessive for the ‘mild off most’ message and I’m sure in years to come the truth, whatever it may be about the origins of this virus will come it

cantQuiteBeliveIt · 06/03/2020 22:41

outing-putting
come it-come out ...

cantQuiteBeliveIt · 06/03/2020 22:42

Mild for most ffs autocorrect 🤣

LadyMarathonRunner · 06/03/2020 23:40

I think it seems very unlikely, the numbers just don't add up to me.

TheQueef · 06/03/2020 23:44

Fuck no.
I've not got a tin foil hat on saying they GM modded a virus to tackle their aging population but NO.
Don't believe ours either, it's just crowd control now.

@FragrantLikeRice
I have lived in China for 12 years. The govt has taken extreme measures to control the virus and these seem to have been successful. I live in Jiangsu province and new case numbers are dropping. Control measures are starting to be relaxed in my city and office workers went back last Monday.
There are definitely unreported cases as some people will have had a very mild case, thought it was a cold and did not seek any treatment. Similarly I am sure there were cases in other provinces before the shut down.
Re the numbers not adding up- what is this based on? No other country has taken the extreme measures that China has so we have nothing to compare it to.
I have been accused on threads of being blindly pro the Chinese govt, but my comments are based on what I have personally seen and experienced. From a purely anecdotal view I don’t know anyone who has been ill. as part of the foreign community mixing with lots of nationalities and people who work in many different companies, somebody would know of someone who was ill or who has died if cases really were dramatically higher.
However, my comments apply to Jiangsu province. I have no idea what the situation is in Hubei.

GinDrinker00 · 07/03/2020 08:34

I do. But only because they’ve been out there disinfecting everything, forced people into isolation and those who do venture out well if your not wearing a face mask or taking precautions the China government are punishing them for it. (Seen footage of people being beaten in China for not having face masks). Obviously there will be new cases but I don’t think to many. But that’s what everyone needs to do, get off their backsides stop having this “well be fine” attitude and be proactive before it’s to late! If only China had done this back in November/

Yes, measures are strict for non compliance: the protection of all trumps the rights of the individual.

AnyOldSpartabix · 07/03/2020 09:23

The WHO inspectors seemed to back up the claims. China, after an appalling start has now ratchetted up their response. They have the means and infrastructure to produce the required tests and the power to enforce proper isolation, which will be far more difficult in the west.

AnyOldSpartabix · 07/03/2020 09:29

Here’s the WHO report, for anyone interested.

Echobelly · 07/03/2020 09:33

I'm not sure.... I get they might not want to it to look as bad to the rest of the world, but if the reality is totally different they must know the truth will get out and that would make them look even worse.

What exactly are we supposed to do other than wash our hands and cough into our elbows?

DippyAvocado · 07/03/2020 09:44

I actually think the Chinese government (eventually) instilled far more draconian containment measures than will ever be tolerated in other countries, or would even be possible as the Chinese government had a lot of infrastructure available. It's probable these measures have slowed the spread of the virus. I don't think we will be able to contain it as successfully as they have done.

However, we do have the advantage of being aware of the virus and being able to implement prevention early so hopefully it won't take hold as fiercely as it did in China during the first couple of months when measures weren't taken.

slipperywhensparticus · 07/03/2020 09:50

@EdithHope

To me london seems very overcrowded 🤷‍♀️ and yes china compared to many places is crowded they live in smaller spaces taller buildings etc etc it's not knocking them to say that they have a beautiful country it's just very full compared to here

DippyAvocado · 07/03/2020 10:00

Cities in China are crowded but don't forget that a lot of the country is still very rural. I read that the containment measures have severely affected the economies of rural regions as they can't get agricultural supplies etc and has set back China's programme to eradicate poverty.

UnderTheCherryTree · 07/03/2020 10:03

I wonder if the warmer weather in southern China is helping to stem the spread of the virus?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/03/2020 10:07

Although I think they aren't detecting all the cases, yes, in general I do believe China at this point, because WHO officials back up what they are saying. China appears, outside of Hubei, to be breaking the chains of transmission. I suspect that at this point, in terms of CV it's the safest place to be.
