Coronavirus!No soap in school

Just been informed by my 11 year old son that they haven’t had soap in school all week,I’ve checked with other parents and their children are saying the same, how can this be happening when we are all trying our best to steer clear of Coronavirus,I’m baffled!!called up KCA school in Kempston and they don’t seem to be grasping the urgency of needing soap,I was told it’s going fast because the children are going a little mad with it,No!! They are obviously using it more as directed. I was rudely told that the soap dispensers are already being checked a couple times a day!suppose we just have to wait until all our children have caught this deadly virus and passed it onto their sick or elderly relatives.

Emmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm send some in with him. The place is awash (pun intended) with people stealing soap. Kids are also probably using way more than necessary because their parents are warning them about the importance of washing their hands.

Well...I’m going to call him lunch time tomorrow,if no soap is available I’m going to go and collect him from schoolsmile

And that will help how?? That is just a silly statement. There is none to be GOT! The school is probably all out. Give him some from home and send him in. Christ.

They will struggle to get it at a supermarket. I work in one and since Friday we have been absolutely manic. Sales have equalled Xmas week. We have run out of sanitizer, soap, hand wash, anti bac wipes, toilet roll, coffee, tea bags, pasta, rice, beans, bleach, petrol and diesel. It is crazy.

exLtEveDallas · 05/03/2020 18:47

Our Primary School is about to fall into this trap.

We haven’t run out, yet. However our usual supplier is now stating up to a 4 week wait for liquid soap to fit our dispensers and 4-6 weeks for hand sanitiser. When we bought bar soap the children abused it/stole it/played with it and it’s more expensive.

If we go for another supplier it will take around 2 weeks to set up an account.
We have no petty cash, no debit card and no finance staff - it is now all centralised with our MAT.

So it’s not as easy as ‘just go to the supermarket/chemist’ and I think a lot of parents don’t realise that.

If our parents would send their children in with personal soap supplies it would be great! But that’s not going to happen.

Butteredtoast55 · 05/03/2020 18:56

As others have said, school suppliers are struggling. We have heard that the supply of hand sanitizer comes from affected areas like China and their factories have shut down.
Our school ordered supplies at half term with enough to get us through March as this is also the year-end and schools tend not to order when they are closing one year's budget and setting the other. However, we are getting through what we do have at twice the rate as usual. The timing could not have been worse and, yes, people are panic-buying and making the situation worse.

Porcupineinwaiting · 05/03/2020 19:00

My company usually supplies hand sanitizer to staff. Trying to reorder this morning, all gone. For the office workers it's not so bad as soap and water are still available but not good for site staff.

Ask, I think given the unusual circumstances you wouldn’t surprised. I would rather know of it was a problem and be able to address it than not know and find out later.
Your PTA would probably be happy to go down the cash and carry and buy soap as a donation if you had a need due to a delay setting up an account. It’s an emergency situation, most parents will step up.

walker1891 · 05/03/2020 19:01

We have been told not to wash hands more as we can't afford the extra soap and paper towels as the budgets are that tight. I was also told not to use the cleaning products more to wipe surfaces as again we can't afford it. I have been and bought supplies for my class along with anti bac wipes for handles etc. I spent 30 minutes cleaning before class this morning as the cleaner will not do extra either as it isn't what she is contracted for.

HouseOfCrayCray · 05/03/2020 19:07

So strange because my DC came home saying the exact same thing last week. Difference being there'd been no soap for at least 2 months, in one classroom at least!!!!! I had a word & they went & bought supermarket soap that same day.

HughGrantsHair · 05/03/2020 19:19

We're having trouble with supply too. Lots of my children have been bringing in their own this week. I've even pinched some at times, with their permission of course. I'd send my children into school with some if I could, but can't find any!

Helenj1977 · 05/03/2020 19:24

That's disgusting. My children wouldn't be going to a school with no soap. Yep, send them in with some but as soon as they leave the loo they'll have everyone else's germs on their hands.

PerfectParrot · 05/03/2020 20:08

I think that's disgusting, and not just cos the corona virus. Ordinary bugs will spread like wildfire if nobody is able to wash their hands after using the toilet! They shouldn't open in hand washing facilities aren't available. I'd go nuts at having to work in such an environment, and I'm surprised it is legal.

mumme111 · 05/03/2020 20:17

My sons school hasn't had running water in the downstairs toilets for months it's ridiculous x

twinnywinny14 · 05/03/2020 20:32

I went in to 3 supermarkets on my way home and all 3 had sold out of every single type or soap there is. This problem is only going to get worse!! Slightly concerning as most of the population obv never washed their hands before this virus!

Icarriedawatermelon82 · 05/03/2020 20:35

My dd says they only have shampoo to wash their hands with?? She says it's been like that for a while. Very small school with a very small budget but really? Now I know I shall either buy myself or get PTA to fund!!

MyHairNeedsASnip · 05/03/2020 20:46

This is 'normal' in DD's primary school and has been for the last 4 years. I used to send her with a hand gel in her book bag but...

I must ask her in the morning if there's any soap in the toilets

WwfLeopard · 05/03/2020 20:56

We’re using washing up liquid instead 🤷‍♀️

ElderAve · 05/03/2020 20:58

Over the last 10 years I've been responsible for buying the soap in three different schools. One infant, one junior and a secondary.

I can tell you that the only places in schools where soap is actually used is the infants and the ladies loos, regardless of what your kids tell you, everywhere else soap lasts forever Grin

Lunafortheloveogod · 05/03/2020 21:01

Get a travel bottle and fill it from the big household one? He can keep it in his pocket n squeeze a bit as he needs it. Saves him deciding the big ones heavy and abandoning it too Grin

Barbararara · 05/03/2020 21:03

I’m baffled why a school running low wouldn’t ask parents to help out. Not everyone will or can but a few would make a difference.

NewName54321 · 05/03/2020 21:29

I’m going to call him lunch time tomorrow,if no soap is available I’m going to go and collect him from school

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just send him in with some soap?

ElderAve · 05/03/2020 21:32

Sorry, and the kitchen! Kitchen staff are very particular about handwashing.

If everyone washed their hands properly all along, no one would be running out of soap because the usual supply would be plenty.

itsallthedramaMickiloveit · 05/03/2020 21:33

DH has an email in work today zenith are out of hand sanitizer.
I can imagine schools, restaurants and bars are all going to be going through the same.

They won't close. We just have to use what we've got.

mumwon · 05/03/2020 21:34

I was going to suggest washing up liquid too (I use that when I am in the kitchen)
question (& I am teetotal too Grin) if you rinsed hands in gin or vodka wouldn't that kill germs (if you were out - I have visions of people with tiny bottles of spirit at work "honest guv its just to clean my hands!" Grin) Obviously you cant give that to dc at school - but the teachers might appreciate it!

mumwon · 05/03/2020 21:35
