Scenario 1
In 2 weeks I am putting on a school production. Cast of 60 plus crew aged 10-13. Large musical with lots of dance routines involving hand holding, lifts, floor work, partner work, connected lines of children etc. Includes hugging but not kissing (they're 13 so refuse point blank!). We use radio mic headsets. Expected audience of around 180-220 per night. 2 performances plus a school performance. Children have been rehearsing for 3 months.

Colleague asked me today what I'd do if it was cancelled. I laughed and said I'd cry. She said she was serious and if it was her child she'd have pulled them already. It made me think and worry.

Would you want your child in this production? Would you watch it? Would you want it cancelled?

Scenario 2
In 5 weeks we have a performing arts tour in France (Normandy). Trip is fully paid for. Involves performing 3 concerts, a workshop, watching a concert, a museum visit and a beach trip. Would you want it cancelled? Would you let your child go?

Scenario 1 - it depends on if there’s been an outbreak in the area but I’d not pull my child unless there was a huge risk.

Scenario 2 - I’d not let my child go

Remember this board is not reflective of the uk in general. I work in the nhs and dont really know anyone thats taking the same measures that people are on here.

Im going on a large trip to London which no one has really questioned

I'm with bog, I'd let the dance show go ahead but only if there's no cases in your area. Anything remotely connected and they'd be out. Expect and be prepared for a lot of questions.

No. I would not let me child travel separately from me in France.

Meruem · 04/03/2020 23:22

I agree with bog and pickle on both scenarios.

manicinsomniac · 04/03/2020 23:29

Thank you Bog, Pickle and Mereum.

I'd much rather cancel the tour than the show so I'm at least half cheered up by the responses.

We don't have anything in the area (that I know of!) yet so will wait and see for a few days more.

Marlox - I know most people aren''t worried yet. But I want to be prepared for the concerns of those parents who will be.

I'd let my dc continue to do both - unless the FO advice changes between now and the trip.

The media are over-hyping the danger and risk to life, IMVHO.

Chocolateandchats · 04/03/2020 23:38

Yes to the production while there’s been so cases in your area. No to France, too risky for my liking.

Italy has a 3.4% death rate at the moment, so I don’t think the media are over hyping this, I think the government are under hyping it ! Even if you are young enough to not be too worried, many of us are not, and many of us have family members who are high risk. Acting responsibly means drastically cutting social interactions involving groups.
I have two dc under 16, but I am in my fifties, with auto immune issues. I think it is very sad for you and the children to not hold the concert, but in order to cut down the wider risk to the community, I think all events like this need to be cancelled or postponed. We all need to be proactive in reducing community spread, to slow the virus.
