Big cities - what precautions are you taking

I'm in a fortunate position where I can work from home, so am doing that. Along with vigorous hand washing.

However I have small children and am finding it hard to know what to limit. Soft play? Definitely. But they have several parties coming up. Do we not go? Also what about things like swimming lessons etc?

Just interested to know what others are doing.

Certainly wouldn't be going anywhere near soft play, those places are virtually incubation centres at the best of times.

I also would avoid swimming pools, dd always gets a cold.

I'd avoid public transport and provably play groups

Honeybee85 · 04/03/2020 19:57

What we do:
Avoid crowds
Bought extra hygiena products such as handsoap, bleech for the toilet
Carry a handkerchief with me so I can use it to cover my nose and mouth if someone is coughing near me
Keep my general health in good shape by eating healthy so I’m in my best ‘fighting shape’ against the virus

And DH made arrangements with his colleagues at work, they work in shifts. DH leaves the house at 6 in the morning so he can avoid the rush hours when going to and returning from work (public transport).

screamer1 · 04/03/2020 20:02

All good precautions. Think I'm going to knock the parties on the head too.

In London. Avoiding public transport and going out shopping. One of my children is home educated the other in school so she's our real possible source of infection. Hand washing strenuously encouraged and hand gel - luckily I bought 30 bottles back from the US from Bath and Body Works in multiple different scents and 68% alcohol. Not sure what else I can do. Supposed to go to the cinema this weekend but not sure now 🤷‍♀️

HappentoHappen · 04/03/2020 20:04

I’m in a densely populated city which already has a few cases.

I work with just two other people so I will be continuing that. My commute is a walk so that’s fine. I often work from home but I also enjoy a bit of social contact now and again during the working day.

I’ve been reducing my social activities (cafes etc) but not stopped entirely. I think it would really impact on my mental health. I went into town today to get my hair done, it badly needed it and I can’t just stop cutting it indefinitely Wink

My children are school age so I’m not stopping any of their activities (unless it becomes necessary, obvs). We’re non-UK and it’s normal to shake hands with your teacher in the morning and at home time. This has been stopped for the duration- they can now wave, or bump elbows, etc) and the children all know why, and I think that’s impressed on them the importance of handwashing!

I’V e started eating more healthily, having fallen into bad habits over the winter. Making a real effort to eat lots of fruit and veg for example.

I’m not particularly worried for my own health, and I’m certainly not worried for my life, but obviously I’d prefer not to fall ill. More importantly though, I don’t want to unwittingly contribute to spreading the virus and potentially infecting more vulnerable members of society down the line.

screamer1 · 04/03/2020 20:06

Yes finding the trying to keep on top of my kids hand hygiene is pretty hard. The school are being quite on it. But they've constantly got their fingers in their mouths.

Not much. But I’m quite a solitary soul anyway. Don’t travel by public transport, don’t socialise much. I’ll probably try and avoid big crowds of places. I’m taking part in a large charity event next month and kind of hoping they cancel as I think that will be the biggest crowd I’ll have been near for some time.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 04/03/2020 20:08

Avoiding any crowds as much as possible.
Washing hands thoroughly.
Don't use public transport anyway.
Keeping on top of all hhold chores in case of illness.
Taking high strength vit c and zinc.

Not much more I can do really.
I wish the schools would close though. I'm expecting that over the next few weeks.

HappentoHappen · 04/03/2020 20:11

Keeping on top of all hhold chores in case of illness.

I’ve found myself doing that too. I’ve been quite ill off and on over the past few months and I’ve been making an effort to get things very clean and comfortable just in case I end up being really sick at home and feeling rubbish.

YakkityYakYakYak · 04/03/2020 20:25

I’m not doing anything differently at the moment. I wash my hands a lot anyway so no change there. If it really escalates then I’d probably just stay at home a lot more, I’m on mat leave so don’t really need to go anywhere. But I’m just going to wait and see what happens for a little while longer. I don’t see any reason right now to change my behaviour, but am aware that things could change rapidly.

halfsoaked · 04/03/2020 20:25

I live and work in a tiny place so we rarely go to any cities, I wonder if people aren't bothering to go places. We went to a cinema in half term and then lunch at frankie and bennys and were the only people in either.

KaptenKrusty · 04/03/2020 20:30

Nothing really! Just wash my hands a bit more regularly! Still on the tube daily, haven’t changed any plans! Have 5 upcoming flights il likely still
Be taking.

tempnamechange98765 · 04/03/2020 20:36

Gosh. Nothing! I'm in Cardiff and there's only been one confirmed case in Wales to my knowledge so I guess it's a bit different. But I went to softplay last weekend, my DCs are still going to nursery, activities. Life goes on!

Supersimkin2 · 04/03/2020 20:36

London here, 7 miles from the KIngston outbreak.

All work, travel and shopping as normal. Bit of handwashing when I come in but I do that anyway as it's so good at stopping colds. Only had one bug this winter.

Oddly, both GP surgeries I visited were very empty.

Curlyshabtree · 04/03/2020 20:36

None at all

Aramox · 04/03/2020 20:39

Avoiding rush hour tube if possible, nothing else except handwashing. Kid uses public transport to get to school so we’re basically stuffed.

UpperLowercaseSymbolNumber · 04/03/2020 20:42

Well it rather depends on your life doesn’t it. I live in London and have to commute using the tube. If I get it will most likely be due to the tube or the children. Yes there are bits around the edges like washing hands as soon as you get in to work/home, using hand gel, trying not to touch face etc but I can hardly refuse to go to the office for the foreseeable future just in case.

Tbh at this stage I’m more viewing it as a when not if it hits us.

caulkheaded · 04/03/2020 20:44

Birmingham. Nothing except extra hand washing.

fartyface · 04/03/2020 20:56

Birmingham.
Nothing. But everyone else is so it is lovely and quiet on the trains.
