Why don't they get it?

OP posts:
goingoverground · 03/03/2020 23:15

Yep, you've got, KenDodd. The Wikipedia link is just the model in its simplest form but that's pretty much it.

halcyondays · 03/03/2020 23:20

The lucky ones
Hermits, the older I get, the more appealing being a hermit sounds!
People who have it so mildly they don’t know they’ve had it.

They will never know exactly how many people have it as it’s not practical to test everyone.

Lumene · 03/03/2020 23:24

I heard that some people are immune to HIV and they can be traced back to people who survived the plagues!

Surely we can all be traced back to people who survived the plagues or we wouldn’t be here?!?

ChipotleBlessing · 03/03/2020 23:25

Even in those ski apartments with superspreader Steve there were people who didn’t catch it even though they ended up living with something like 8 people with it, as well as having the Steve exposure. Whether it’s luck or some people having natural immunity or something slightly different about their habits, who knows.

DropYourSword · 03/03/2020 23:27

@Lumene excellent point!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 03/03/2020 23:43

Surely the 80% (I also read that figure, in the Guardian I think) who catch it will have it to varying degrees - some will be critically ill, some die, but for others it will be a week of moping about in pyjamas, drinking tea and watching Netflix?

tud41 · 03/03/2020 23:45

Well China has peaked and it infected a whopping .......0.0014% of their population so if we get anywhere near 20% of government has failed miserably

goingoverground · 03/03/2020 23:46

I heard that some people are immune to HIV and they can be traced back to people who survived the plagues!

10% of Europeans carry a mutation that makes them resistant to HIV infection, a much higher percentage than in other populations. It has been suggested that it is because of an epidemic that happened in Europe that resulted in " natural selection" ie more people with the gene survived. But as the plague is believed to be bacterial, it is unlikely that is the cause, more likely a viral epidemic.

Surely we can all be traced back to people who survived the plagues or we wouldn’t be here?!?

Many people will have "survived" because they didn't come into contact with the plague or get infected, not because they have immunity. The PP means people who recovered from the plague.

Mycatismadeofstringcheese · 03/03/2020 23:47

The 20% are the ones who sing the national anthem while washing their hands.

(No other song has the same anti-viral effect).

Butterymuffin · 03/03/2020 23:48

People who tick as many of the following boxes as possible:

  • young
  • physically fit
  • good immune system
  • good hand and general hygiene

It's a good job I wash my hands thoroughly as I'm screwed on all other counts. Hopefully I can hide until herd immunity kicks in.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 03/03/2020 23:51

I’m taking precautions but I think it’s only a matter of time until I get it, as I have clients come to my home to pick up their dogs, after their foreign holidays. I’m screwed.

goingoverground · 04/03/2020 00:00

It's peaked for now but populations are dynamic, restrictions may be lifted, people will come in and out of the country, move around the country, some, or even just one, might be carrying coronavirus. It doesn't mean there won't be an increase in infections again at a later date.

tud41 · 04/03/2020 00:06

Oh I totally understand that but for them to suggest 80% now just seems Silly to cause a panic. Sort of like when they show a map of what New York would look like if water level rose by X amount when it is only predicted to raise a 10th of what they quoted.

I get the point about mentioning the worse case scenario but people can and will interpret that to mean that over 1 million people in the uk will die of this.(obviously doesn’t help when the media forget to mention in the story That it is a worst case scenario)

catspyjamas123 · 04/03/2020 01:07

Under 18s don’t really get it.

stellabelle · 04/03/2020 01:12

Healthy young people who don't go out much .

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 04/03/2020 06:15

Are we saying China’s has peaked because of its draconian restrictions? But everywhere else isn’t bothering with doing similar because they don’t want to do travel bans. Man that’s depressing...

FourTeaFallOut · 04/03/2020 06:40

Tea drinking misanthropes? 🤞

catspyjamas123 · 04/03/2020 06:50

I wouldn’t believe the figures from China. We aren’t hearing a lot about what’s happening there at all.

Russellbrandshair · 04/03/2020 06:55

That’s how immunity works. Some people will be immune to corona because their immune system is perfectly formed to fight off those kind of viruses. Other people have immune systems that fight off bacteria more effectively etc. There is a theory that you are drawn to sexual partners by their smell. The reason for that is we are attracted to mates who have DIFFERENT immune systems to us so that any offspring will have a wider and more comprehensive immune system which protects against a larger range of illnesses. Sometimes if a persons smell puts you off (and isn’t the obvious BO etc) it’s because your immune systems are too similar. It’s your body’s way of rejecting that person as a mate.
Lots of studies on this.

KenDodd · 04/03/2020 08:46

I saw a map about how it might spread through the UK and noticed an assumption it wouldn’t spread to the far north west of Scotland. What a load of shite. Loads of tourists head that way. It’s as likely to get to north west scotland as it is anywhere else

Maybe because people are more widely dispersed though they have less human contact. They're not all going to offices every day with hundreds of people.

OP posts:
happywifey · 04/03/2020 08:48

Hmm..Those with no contact with people until the coronavirus passes, but I expect that there are people who may have natural immunity too, perhaps due to genetic variants. Also , asymptomatic people prob count for some of that 80%. Interesting question OP

goingoverground · 04/03/2020 15:56

Are we saying China’s has peaked because of its draconian restrictions?

Exactly that. The less people you come into contact with, the less likely you are to catch it and if you do, the fewer people you will pass it on to.

enjoyingSun · 04/03/2020 16:35

I heard that some people are immune to HIV and they can be traced back to people who survived the plagues!

www.aboutderbyshire.co.uk/cms/11/sensational-aids-cure-fou.shtml I think they started with Eyam over 300 years ago known for self isolating.

But as the plague is believed to be bacterial, it is unlikely that is the cause, more likely a viral epidemic.

Seen quite a few programs and articles recently that are saying that researchers going over it again are less and less sure what is was and even how it spread.

I did wonder if asymptomatic people would be in that 80% - I assumed rest would be genetic lottery, luck at avoiding or isolation, of some form - self or geographic.

BMW6 · 04/03/2020 16:56

As I understand it loads of people could have it and not know - they may have no symptoms, or low level so think they just have a cold.

Even Plagues, Sweating Sickness and the terrible Flu pandemic of 1918 didn;t infect 100% of the populace. Some people are immune or just were plain lucky.

LizzieMacQueen · 04/03/2020 17:40

@bumblingbovine49 is spot on.

Hoping I'm one of the 20%. I'm the least healthy in my family if 5, the other 4 are willing to be part of the 80%. {if only it could work like that}.
