Corona Virus...I live in Australia, nobody's even talking about it much

FortunesFave · 03/03/2020 21:30

And we don't have a shortage of hand sanitizer or face masks...nobody seems bothered.

There have been 31 cases in Australia as far as I know...and compared to the UK's 51, that's high considering how small the population in Oz is.

I'm curious as to why nobody here is panicking....I'm not seeing posts on Facebook about it among my Aussie fb friends but I am from my UK fb friends....

No one is panicking on my Facebook or in real life either. It’s barely even mentioned when I talk to people!

RogueV · 03/03/2020 21:31

That’s interesting... but also sounds sensible

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 03/03/2020 21:32

At a guess, it may well be down to how the media are portraying it in the different countries.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 03/03/2020 21:33

I have 2 friends in Australia, in different states and both have posted pictures today of empty supermarket shelves.

puds11 · 03/03/2020 21:34

My sisters in Aus, she’s talking about it...

lilyfire · 03/03/2020 21:34

I have friends/family in Canberra and Perth who have sent me photos of supermarket shelves emptied of loo rolls and said it’s because of Coronavirus. Maybe a very specific form of panic.

FortunesFave · 03/03/2020 21:35

Chelsea really? Do they live in big cities? I live in Adelaide which is admittedly a bit of a backwater....but it's still a city. Our shelves are as full as usual.

Oakmaiden · 03/03/2020 21:35

I'm in the UK and I don't think anyone I know has posted anything.

Oh, actually - there has been one joke.

FortunesFave · 03/03/2020 21:39

Oak maybe Mumsnet is giving me a false picture...there's so much about it on here! Daily.

I live in Washington state on the US. We have a population of 7.5 million and there have been 9 deaths on this state. 8 of them all in the same county. All the deaths in the USA have occurred in Washington.
No panic here. The company I work for has its head office a few miles from the nursing home where 5 died and at least 50 have the corona virus. Not worried.

Mummyshark2019 · 03/03/2020 21:49

I have a friend in Melbourne who sent a picture of empty supermarket shelves. Family in Adelaide though say it's pretty low key.

HappentoHappen · 03/03/2020 21:49

My cousin in Sydney posted a photo today of the supermarket shelves emptied of all paper products, no tissues or loo roll to be seen!
My family members have all been very matter-of-fact about it but somebody’s been stocking up!

VivaLeBeaver · 03/03/2020 21:51

Really? Because from photos I see on Twitter it looks like the panic buying is worse in Australia than here? Is Coles the supermarket? Photos upon photos of bare shelves!

WhoDisNewPhone · 03/03/2020 21:53

My friends seem very unconcerned (as am I) but the supermarket shelves in Melbourne are devoid of loo rolls (really don't understand why!) and Chinese restaurants are closing.

So something is going on but I am not sure who- no-one in my circle!

Rayn · 03/03/2020 21:54

Mmm. My friend is a gp and she isn't worried! Sometimes we know too much about what if...

maxbabi · 03/03/2020 21:55

Friends and family in adelaide complaining about empty shelves and panic buying loo paper! A lot of fb posts about loo paper actually!!!

HoppingPavlova · 03/03/2020 21:56

FortunesFave no offence but I’m not surprised. Adelaide.

I’m in Sydney. We haven’t been able to get hand sanitiser for a couple of months now. Every chemist has a sign saying no face masks. No sanitiser in visitors stations in hospitals. Main story in news every day. Todays is a Dr in a local hospital has contracted it and is now in ICU at the local tertiary. All hospital staff who were in contact with them (45) have now been isolated. All patients they have cared for are now self-isolated. A woman here has contracted it from person to person here locally, had not brought it in. Our supermarket shelves are totally empty of toilet paper and pasta. Rice nearly gone, pasta sauces nearly gone etc.

Normally I would say not so lucky with Adelaide but in these things it has its benefitsGrin.

HeyMicky · 03/03/2020 21:59

I've just seen a guardian story saying Woolworths is going to ration loo roll

Flipswhitefudge · 03/03/2020 22:11

I'm in the Shoalhaven and It's business as usual here. We are all panicked out after the bushfires.

wheresthehope · 03/03/2020 22:17

I live in New Zealand. Not to much chat about it here and in fact I have a friend who is on holiday atm in Italy. Willingly flew there last week knowing of the risks. I do wonder what will happen upon on her families arrival back into New Zealand.
We have a strong “it won’t happen to me mentally “ so I wonder if she will quarantine her family or send kids to school.
I have a young baby so I am being as aware as I can

ViveLEntenteCordiale · 03/03/2020 22:21

My family in Aus don't seem too worried about local risk, but they are thinking of postponing their trip to Europe...

AlunWynsKnee · 03/03/2020 22:24

I too have a friend (in Melbourne) who has posted about empty shelves.

Smidge001 · 03/03/2020 22:25

Article in the Sydney morning herald saying people are stockpiling bog roll. www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/supermarkets-stockpile-toilet-paper-production-runs-24-hours-20200303-p546hm.html

LilyMumsnet · 03/03/2020 22:29

We're just moving this over to the right topic now. Flowers

squeekums · 03/03/2020 22:33

Its a bit of a running joke in my circles here in SA
Our local shop hasnt been raided, we rural, unless you include the icecream freezer, but granted it was half price ice cream lol

Now that the SA government talking detention and arrests, you can bet people wont even mention the possibility or get feeling unwell checked out simply cos we dont want to be detained for nothing.
Me and dp now joke the most dangerous thing to do is cough near a cop or politician or in an airport as you may get locked up

no offence but I’m not surprised. Adelaide
Hey hey, not all in SA are stripping shelves.

Wollies now have a 4 pack limit per customer though
