Holiday to Venice in early April - should we cancel?

A couple of months ago I booked us a lovely long weekend in Italy. Plan was to fly to Venice, spend 2 days there, go to Florence for a day and then Pisa for another day.

But .... With the Corona virus I'm now thinking of cancelling. We have insurance but I'm not sure if they'd be willing to cover it.

Insurance generally isn't covering unless FCO advice changes to avoid all but essential travel for area going to which is rare for them to change.

I would just keep watching and waiting, also Tripadviser Venice etc forum has people on the ground. Think chance of catching it is very low but not sure what will be open, if you'll be caught in quarantines either on return or there. On the other hand maybe the same chance staying here by then though its also not clear what insurers pay for if you are caught abroad. Certainly check terms and conditions very closely if you do go ahead though mine has a lot of maybe's in.

Contact your insurer and see what they advise.

Bear in mind the situation is evolving, so in April you may find that the airlines are not flying to Venice. Some airlines have already reduced their flights to Italy.

Or check with the airline and hotel to see if you can reschedule your flights for a few more months.

Yes, you should cancel- the flights are unlikely to go, anyway- how much have you already paid?

chillychicken · 03/03/2020 12:24

I wouldn't cancel unless FCO advice changes.

FCO advice is avoid all but essential travel to several towns nearby.

Have tried calling insurance company but no luck getting through.

I've only paid for flights (cheap Ryanair ones) and hotels are all refundable so we would be too much out of pocket.

Wait and see - why would you make the decision now? The situation is changing really quickly. If the FCO advise changes to advising against travel, you'll get your money back, but you won't if you cancel now.

We're in the same boat for early May so I do understand where you're coming from!
