Work or not to work - cold like symptoms?

quietlyspoken08 · 03/03/2020 07:11

Would you expect people to stay off work if they have cold like symptoms considering the current situation or would this be something you expect normally?

AIBU to think I should battle on and go to work as I really don't think it's corona and just a cold, (obviously being hygienic AF and keeping my germs away from others) or will I cause mass panic in an office full of people?

If everyone with a cold stayed at home the country would literally stop running. It’s a cold, don’t be such a baby.

Have people removed their brains?!

Simon I think the op is asking how many babies they will encounter.
Op I'd go in. But others may feel differently and I see where you're coming from.

Have you been or know someone whose been out of the country in the past 14days or have you been around a confirmed corona person? Ring 111 instead of asking a chat forum.

I've had a cold for 2 weeks now, and gone in. Its clear it's not Corona. Corona starts with high temp and goes straight to the chest. Most colds start with a sore throat.

I work in a healh setting. We haven't been told to stay away if we have a cold unless we have reason to think we might have been exposed to Covid19. eg spouse has just come back. from Northern Italy etc.

If you are in one of the risk categories that the govt advises to self-isolate, then stay home
Otherwise, go in to work if you just have cold symptoms.

Ditto for kids going to school, unless the school advises staying home for some reason.

Millions of people will have colds and they certainly shouldn't stay home just for that

Genuine flu symptoms are another matter, but you shouldn't normally go in with those anyway,
as they would be far more serious to you and to anyone catching it.

No, I would and have gone to work. If you have cold symptoms, you can be pretty sure it’s not coronavirus.

A runny nose, sore throat, and feeling under the weather is a good sign it’s just a little cold.

If you have a fever and cough and trouble breathing (but no upper respiratory symptoms), that’s different and I would take advice from 111.

I work in public health and we are expected to carry on as normal and I will be unless I have flu symptoms (not cold symptoms), or guidance changes about limiting public exposure.

Where I work we don't get sick pay, so people trudge in regardless. There are several workers who travel in by car and all catch each other's colds on a regular basis. At least one of them is sick with something most of the time. My partner's immunity is compromised at the moment as she's a cancer patient on chemotherapy. My part time job is our only income, and I am running the household (partner's care, dog care and looking after elderly mil who lives with us). So I continue to work but I get there as late as possible so I'm not hanging around with the others before work, and I leave as soon as work ends for the same reason. I stay physically as far from them as possible throughout. What to do- we all need the money.

And I shower and wash my mouth out with antiseptic mouth wash as soon as I get home.

If it’s a runny nose cold then they should work it’s not Coronavirus. If they are having symptoms of coronavirus and if they have the option of working at home they should.

"And I shower and wash my mouth out with antiseptic mouth wash as soon as I get home."
What...isnt that a bit extreme? Advice is to wash your hands.

not if there is any reason to expect Corona exposure. I mean it's cold season. if everyone stays at home with a runny nose the country would come to a halt. There has to be a balance. All this panic is helping noone.

@19TabbyMumz I shower and wash my mouth out with antiseptic when I get home from work because my OH is a cancer patient on chemotherapy. Still think its extreme?

I have a cough and I've come to work. No fever (first symptom) so I don't think it's Coronavirus either. I wash my hands a lot anyway, just a bit extra today.

It's a damned if you do and damned if you don't really. You don't want management thinking you're on the skive, and you don't want colleagues to feel at risk... so not sure what the answer is to that one.

@Allonym yes thank you that was exactly my worry. I work with people who suffer from bad asthma and was mindful of their concerns due to corona. Assured them I just have a big standard cold and all was well.

I'm currently WFH as our house has had a virus and although not suffering directly or badly(floored everyone else though!), I'm at home because I work with people who have very vulnerable family members. We've all been careful this flu season as it's been worse than most years. My virus + CV hitting soon after could really floor them, and potentially would be life threatening. Luckily we can all work from home as we need. Previous years I've gone in through viruses, other than worst days and just practiced good hygiene. If there weren't vulnerable people in my colleagues families, I'd have probably gone in.

Everybody is full of cold, flu, chest infections, D&V at this time of year. And hospitals are always over-stretched because of them.

Stay home with D&V obviously, but otherwise, no, of course no one is expected to stay home. We'll have to spend the entire winter months locked in otherwise.

Standard cold symptoms like a runny nose and a chesty cough aren't Coronavirus symptoms, so no need to self isolate - but going into work with a contagious cold is a pretty crappy thing to do in general so best to stay at home OP.
