Ski trip, go or not?

Atalune · 02/03/2020 19:29

We have a family ski trip booked for the French alps next week.

We have been in touch with the travel company and our insurance company. Basically if the travel company/airline etc cancel we are covered.

We are NOT covered if we decide we don’t want to go because I am worried about it.

So....as much as this is a first world problem, I can’t afford really to eat the cost of the holiday and I don’t want to put my children at risk.

I don’t know why I’m posting. I’m just nervous be stressing.

We are all thankfully healthy and fit but even so I don’t want to be stranded in the bloody alps!

I was only making a joke about autocorrect! (Les Arcs is in Savoie not Haute Savoie if anyone’s interested which I doubt.)

Notstrongandstable · 09/03/2020 09:40

We just got back from Haute Savoie on Saturday, everything was fine there. You're outside in fresh air a lot of the time and we were in a chalet with just our friends. Low risk. I would definitely still go to France in the next week or two. Summer on the other hand is a different story...

mammmamia · 09/03/2020 09:51

I know @fluffiphlox Grin

Atalune · 10/03/2020 10:47

Surely ABTA would mean you’re covered?

Still good out here. Haven’t been paying any attention to the news and it’s a bit of a bubble here.

We are home. Friends are on their way out. I think the pistes might close soon....

we are due to go out 2 weeks today..we are driving, self catering in appt..basically had no intention of eating out as dsd has and eating disorder and needs feeding at set times and to her meal plan. we will still be going unless resorts shut
our holiday company saying no refund if you choose not to go.
For me this idea of lockdown only works if everything is closed...but partially closing things like schools and some travel , wont stop the spread, it slows it.
being outside in fresh air is best thing

Atalune · 14/03/2020 15:17

I agree with you. But you can ski if the pistes are closed. Closed in Italy, Austria and Spain.....

Other areas will follow soon.

Theredjellybean · 14/03/2020 15:25

the holiday company we booked with will do full refunds only if borders shut so cannot get to france or if pistes shut...

i agree with them..if we can travel and pistes open we will go.
sadly i think we wont be going...:(

bengalcat · 14/03/2020 17:23

Off to Flaine next Saturday hopefully

Nononoandno · 14/03/2020 18:10

Does anyone know what the return travel situation is for Bulgaria? So back to the uk, I’ve looked on various sites and it’s a bit unclear I can see some flights to and from other destinations are affected.

Atalune · 14/03/2020 20:10

France has just declAred full
Lock down as of midnight tonight. No restaurants no cinema.

Mountains next.

I am so gutted for those of you who are about to have your holidays cancelled.

I have just read France closing all but essential public service areas.. This seems to mean shops except those on a list which included tobacco shops.. So it's OK to go and get your cigarettes that cause underlying lung disease!!!

Yes I imagine pistes next.
Oh well.. Off to Cornwall instead then

Atalune · 15/03/2020 07:05

It’s For the best but I am gutted for you.

When you say you cant afford to... is what you actually mean i cant afford to book another holiday if i dont get the money back?

Thisisworsethananticpated · 15/03/2020 07:32

Fair point . Every one is now missing their holidays . I barely know anyone who isn’t

Myself included , but to put things into perspective , there are worse things than missing a holiday . Missed
Surgeries , missed salary , redundancy , not getting healthcare for
More serious issues etc

brendansbuddy · 15/03/2020 07:57

ALL accommodation in Salzburg region closing from tomorrow so our hotel has cancelled us. But the flights remain... Frustrating that airlines won't refund even though tourists would have nowhere to stay. Anyone know if the airlines will cancel in these circumstances? Otherwise we lose the cost...

MsTSwift · 15/03/2020 07:59

French ski resorts shutting from tomorrow

clearsommespace · 15/03/2020 07:59

@Theredjellybean

I am a non-smoker.
However I agree with keeping the tabacs open. I really think depriving smokers of their nicotine fix at a time like this would just make the situation worse.

Atalune · 15/03/2020 08:16

Friend landed out there on a holiday that they put together themselves.

No insurance will cover it. Snow train only runs twice a week.

They are stuck a bit. And if they come back they will be massively out of pocket.

rookiemere · 15/03/2020 08:39

Well my friends and I decided not to go on Thursday and lost the total cost of our ski trip - even though pistes now closed so our decision was correct - people will lose money through this, it's disappointing but inevitable.
