Who is cancelling their holidays and who is sticking with them?
Over Easter time, current advice ok so would lose money if I choose not to go. What are other people doing?

currently hoping they come up with a vaccine before my wedding in the Caribbean

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 02/03/2020 15:48

There's another thread on this. I'm going to Cape Verde at Easter. Still going.

Hugglespuffed · 02/03/2020 15:48

When is your wedding?

It's here now. So unless you go to a heavily affected area then the risk is the same here.

Cancelled our trip to Amsterdam in late March. Would not have cancelled if it was just dh and myself, but would feel very guilty if ds 2 years old were to get ill. Also advice from work is to travel outside uk only if essential - would not want to self quarantine etc if things did get worse. We booked the train so have rescheduled to the autumn and luckily we could cancel the hotel up to 48 hours before check in. Am really disappointed as wanted to go bit better to be safe than sorry etc...

Glittercandle · 02/03/2020 15:52

DD1 is going to Amsterdam on Saturday and refuses to cancel (I’m worried she’ll be quarantined over there!).

My mum has a trip to Italy booked in May - I imagine the tour company will cancel that as a few people have already dropped out.

DH has a business trip to California booked in a couple of weeks.

We have a family holiday booked in October- hopefully everything will be ok for us to go!

Hugglespuffed · 02/03/2020 15:59

Sorry just noticed the other thread, had not seen it.

Oh gosh I hope it is sorted by October. I have another trip in August and was hoping it was blown over by then!

It is so hard knowing what to do (I'm not worried about catching it per se, just the potential quarantine)

We are going to lanzarote a week on Saturday. Im a bit worried about ending up in quarantine while we are there but not cancelling. So far lanzarote is safe and no cases. Hopefully it will stay that way.

I work in two Devon hotels and we are getting a lot of booking cancellations. Im very worried for my job and the hospitality economy in our area.

BlastEndedSkrewt · 02/03/2020 16:54

@Hugglespuffed - end of July so hoping things will have calmed down by then rather than got a lot worse

Hugglespuffed · 02/03/2020 17:28

We have a wedding abroad in August too so fingers crossed for you blast
Just to let you know though- they say a vaccine won't be available until about 18 months because they have to make sure it is safe.

My son's school trip to Battlefields is still going next week...

I assume you are joking!

There still isn't a commercially approved SARS vaccine. It took 20 months to develop a SARS vaccine at all. The Ebola vaccine was approved in the USA under a compassionate use protocol to allow it to be used without full trials and FDA approval. Compassionate use protocol products will carry risks because they haven't been fully tested.

If by some miracle they did come up with a vaccine that was both effective and compassionate protocol approved, the priority would be front line medical professionals not someone going on holiday.

I don't know what to do. We are going on a holiday of a lifetime to Tokoyo in Easter. We want to go but are worried about being stuck out there or stuck in quarantine when we get back. To cancel would mean a massive financial hit, we spent absolutely ages saving for this holiday so effectively we would never get the chance go again. I am hoping the Government will take this decision out of our hands......

TheMammothHunters · 03/03/2020 07:57

Supposed to be going to Gran Canaria for a week at Easter. At the moment no cases there, 40 here.
Just have to take a view in a month unless flights cancelled or other advice says no.
My parents are currently in India!

WashHandsTwentySeconds · 03/03/2020 16:07

I've got some European travel booked in a couple of weeks (for pleasure, not business).

I'm just going to wait and see up until the last minute. My concerns are less about getting the virus, but more that flights may get cancelled and just that sightseeing places may shut so won't end up being much of a holiday!

auslass · 03/03/2020 17:36

Hubby and I are headed to Barbados for a babymoon next week. No cases there and plan on "happy birthdaying my hands twice" all the way. Not cancelling it.

Roselilly36 · 03/03/2020 17:50

We have cancelled our trip to Spain, we were due to go this month, as I have an autoimmune condition, it’s not worth the risk. We have lost money on flights etc.

KoalasandRabbit · 03/03/2020 17:57

We have a trip to Thailand and Malaysia in August. Thailand has just announced its quarantining anyone from France ill or not for 14 days and DH is French so am attempting to cancel the Thai part, difficult though as its 2 non-refundable hotels, 1 Avios point hotel, 1 transfer and 4 flights. Insurance won't pay out at this stage at least so just trying direct to start with.

Canshopwillshop · 03/03/2020 18:19

We’ve got a big holiday planned with 2 teen DC for Easter to Dubai and The Maldives. We would lose a fortune if we cancel so will go ahead if we can. I’m concerned about quarantine and travel disruption though.

Keeping a very worried eye on the situation.

Hugglespuffed · 03/03/2020 18:53

Thanks all. It is hard to know what to do.

@KoalasandRabbit is your DH in France at the moment then?

OP posts:
Aragog · 03/03/2020 18:55

We have a short break booked in France at Easter as part of DD's 18th birthday celebrations. We will only cancel if we are ill or having to self isolate, or if the FOC says we can't go. Travel insurance would pay out for that but not if we just decide we don't fancy going anymore.
Also have a long weekend away in London in May for a friends wedding. Same thing - only cancel if we have to.

KoalasandRabbit · 03/03/2020 18:59

No he's in the UK but is French and travels on a French passport. He could apply for a British one but would have to give up the French one so doesn't want to. We maybe OK as flying from London rather than France but don't want to risk it. Also if UK numbers rise we could be added to the list pretty soon. Am trying the 2 non-refundable hotels and seeing what they say.

Fidgety31 · 03/03/2020 19:10

I’m going to Disney world on Saturday
Not going to cancel

BridgeToTerabithia · 03/03/2020 19:35

For people going to France: France have advised their citizens to stop non essential travel. www.diplomatie.gouv.fr/fr/conseils-aux-voyageurs/informations-pratiques/article/nouveau-coronavirus-covid-19-02-03-2020
