..to say Homestead Prepping Lite is not Doomsday Survival Prepping. So here's some non-panicky ideas

I'm a general prepper so I know about this stuff. It's my "hobby", if you like. Best case scenario is it all goes away and is nothing. We all want that but it might not be like that. Next best case scenario is two weeks boring self isolation. Yes, you can ask your pals to bring you food but this pal has their own stuff to deal with. I'll help you up to a point as long as I'm not required to self isolate too. Next best case scenario is a general lockdown in your area when nobody can bring anyone anything. No one in your house is poorly but there's only so much TV you can binge watch before you get hungry or need a wee or do other hygiene stuff. This is where homestead prepping lite comes in.
You don't need to worry about utilities going off etc but you do need to eat. You probably have stuff in your freezer and cupboards but enough for two weeks. Frozen sweetcorn and spaghetti for breakfast, anyone?
And bog roll? Yes, there are general prepper approaches but who's got time for that shit if you aren't a prepper? You need to get extra but where to store it? Get a hold-all. Take the bog roll out of its packaging, squash each roll down and pack it in there. Yes, you might lose some on the outside of the roll, they'll look a bit bumpy but it's better than a bog roll wall in your bedroom. Or rejig your drawers Grinto make space.
I'm not a medic, I am over 50 with an underlying health problem so my situation is different to you regarding getting poorly. Follow general advice about good hand hygiene and eating well to boost your immune system.
I hope the worst that happens is you get bored. Don't beat yourself up about being concerned. And stop willy waving about how it's all nothing to you and everyone else is being silly. Take back control Grin of this situation and don't give in to hype either way. There's loads of great advice on here.

Squashing toilet rolls??? And we don't live on homesteads. I think 2 weeks isolation would be an excellent way to force me to tidy the house out of sheer boredom.. And there is such a thing as supermarket deliveries. Personally I'll paniic when I have to.

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 07:24

What part of the "area in lockdown " means Sainsburys still deliver?😂

OP posts:
Thisisworsethananticpated · 29/02/2020 07:25

Will the supermarket deliveries come ? I don’t think that’s very fair on the poor delivery drivers

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 07:26

No, we don't live on homesteads, but it's an expression among general Preppers. You may well be in a flat in tbe middle of a city but if you can't go out, you might as well be on a farm in the arse end of nowhere. At least you'll have utilities and the internet but you can't wipe your arse with Netflix.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 29/02/2020 07:29

If you make sure you have a little extra in, you won't need to panic at all.

I agree with you Bellini. Keep forgetting medicines. Can't do anything about my prescription stuff except keep on top of reordering it, but should prob grab a few extra packs of paracetamol.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 29/02/2020 07:30

Homestead prepping? Squashing toliet rolls?

I'll continue as I am, thanks.

PureAlchemy · 29/02/2020 07:32

I think a lockdown would be a terrible time to tidy, no way of getting any discarded clutter out of the house!

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 07:33

Cheers @HoneysuckIejasmine , I'm deliberately steering clear on here of talking about medical stuff because I'm not a healthcare practitioner and I have my own health problems unique to me. But seeing those people stuck in hotel rooms or cruise ships in developed democracies like Spain and Japan. Or what's happening in Italy should make people have second thoughts about dismissing it all as hype and bollocks. There's stuff you can't control and stuff you can. Why make yourself a problem for the authorities when they have more serious problems to deal with that aren't you being hungry.

I do think with the online shops that it could be difficult to get slot or they could be limited to regular customers like Tesco do at Christmas with the delivery saver for the Christmas slots, when I tried to get a slot then it was very difficult. I have already booked my usual Wednesday slot for next week as I feel it could be busy.

As an aside I have a toilet roll mountain of 9 packs down the side of the wardrobe, you wouldn't know they were there, I always buy the bulk ones from Amazon as they are the ones I like.

Shineynew · 29/02/2020 07:35

It’s likely to be 2 months not 2 weeks

RedHelenB · 29/02/2020 07:35

Cleaning windows and the like. You coUldale fill sone hin bags ready. Deliveries of food will have to happen, you can't starve people to death. A load of nonsense, why get some hysterical?

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 07:35

If squashed toilet rolls for the next two weeks are the worst thing in your life, you're bloody lucky.

OP posts:
Owlsintowels · 29/02/2020 07:36

Why is squashing toilet rolls a step too far for people? I'm baffled by this reaction.
Having to make soup out of toilet roll is there is nothing else to eat is a step too far, fine but an idea how to store them: thanks!.
People are odd, they react so defensively against stuff which seems a little scary or far fetched

As I often think when reading on MN - what do you or the universe gain by posting something snarky to an OP who is trying to be helpful? Why not just ignore if you don't want to think about it?
You just come across as small and bitter

PureAlchemy · 29/02/2020 07:36

We’ve got a few bits extra in though. Extra toilet roll too, happily our usual brand was on special offer the last time I was at the supermarket.

And having seen how empty the shelves at the local shop got a few years ago when heavy snow stopped deliveries for a few days, I think it’s sensible to have a bit extra in if things do start heading in the direction of a general lockdown.

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 07:36

"Deliveries of food will have to happen,"
By whom?

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 07:43

@RedHelenB Say supermarkets can't deliver - a reasonable scenario because I haven't seen any in those lock down areas in Italy - and so the authorities have a choice: Deliver food to you, a healthy person who's a bit bored of pasta and frozen sweetcorn or spend resources on an elderly person or sick person . It's a tough call. Not.
Take some responsibility for your own situation and stop expecting other people to do it for you.

OP posts:
PureAlchemy · 29/02/2020 07:49

Seriously though, not everyone can afford to stock up, just look at the numbers of people using foodbanks.

Will the government have planned for things like delivering food parcels to households that genuinely have nothing to eat in?

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 07:50

No idea. But if you can, why shouldn't you. It means that efforts can be for people who need it, not people who couldn't be arsed.

And the highly recommend Jack Monroe's Tin Can Cook. Or her website cookingonabootstrap.com/ for budget ideas.
Corned beef chilli has turned from an experiment in our house to something we've added to the "standard list of recipes that are ok " in our house.

I like the idea of being prepared in a sensible way. I’ve never done it before so I’m finding it REALLY tricky to know what to buy. Problem is it’s no good me buying tons of lentils, chickpeas etc because we just don’t eat them. I bought extra pet supplies, toilet rolls, dishwasher tabs, paracetemol and porridge oats because I only got as far as essentials and breakfast ideas in my head. As soon as I got to lunches I got stuck! It seems like such a task to think what would we eat if I had no bread or fresh stuff in the fridge.
I genuinely think it’s sensible to have extras now but someone else who doesn’t plan on living on rice and lentils help me out. I can’t read those proper prepping threads those are bonkers.

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 07:58

@TwoleftUggs , ok , what do you eat? The power will still be on so you can still store things in your freezer and fridge.
Don't forget breakfast. Pancake mix is good. Or porridge. You don't even need milk for that - think of where oat milk comes from. Porridge in water (I know, sounds weird) on the hob. Stir it as it cooks to make it creamy. Add whatever you like. Nutella, honey, drained tinned fruit. Whatever. But boring after a bit but butter than frozen sweetcorn and spaghetti for breakfast.

OP posts:
PureAlchemy · 29/02/2020 08:00

If you’ve got room in your freezer you can freeze bread and cheese for a few months.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 29/02/2020 08:05

Plus you can buy bread mixes that just need water and oil. Buy things you like to eat.
Microwave rice packets are always handy for your larder ( plus you can cook them on the hob for those without microwaves).

TankGirl97 · 29/02/2020 08:09

I don't see why it's a controversial issue at all tbh. We've all seen flooding, storms, power cuts, heavy snow. In 2000 we had to walk bloody miles because of the fuel strikes! I was a young adult during the foot and mouth outbreak and remember the huge impact that had locally.
Even if you've not been directly affected before, surely you can see it's a possibility that you'll for one reason or another need extra supplies in, especially in winter.

bellinisurge · 29/02/2020 08:13

@TwoleftUggs . My apologies, I saw you are already switched on about porridge.
for lunches, butties are great. Cheese on toast. Tinned Soups. Again, not earth shaking. Likely to be a bit boring after a bit but they will do a turn.
There is also ....[whispers] pot noodle. I love pot noodle. Or fancy versions of that with Soba noodles or whatever.
