Our first holiday abroad as a family is booked in may in Tenerife and our baby is going to be 8 months old (7 weeks prem.)

Cancelling right now will mean losing all of our money and I’ve been really looking forward to it, I would just like some positive reassurance really. I’ve kind of buried my head in the sand thinking this will go away or die down at least. Of course If the giver ember advises we will cancel.

My anxiety is sky high right now so I’d just like some reassurance really! Please everyone tell me it’s going to be okay Grin...

One fact... China has peaked and it infected a huge... 0.0014% of their population... Some governments saying 80% could get it is just covering their own backs in case of the worst possible case scenario.

BlastEndedSkrewt · 04/03/2020 10:53

I sympathise - i'm terrified that my Caribbean wedding in July will be cancelled because it will be everywhere in the UK & they won't let us in!

GloriaMumsnet · 04/03/2020 11:04

We've moved this to our coronavirus topic!

ifonly4 · 04/03/2020 11:13

We're going away in a month, it's all paid for we won't get our money back if we cancel. So I'm planning as if we're going but agreed we'll review things a few days before.

At the moment the country we're going to have far less cases than we do here and nothing at all on the island, whereas we already have cases in our county. That could all change, but at the moment we'd be at less risk on our holiday. Also, I come into contact with masses of people, taking a week off and I'll actually be coming across less.

oldwhyno · 04/03/2020 11:21

why would you cancel now if you'd lose all your money? why not just wait and see how it plays out?

WhiteCat1704 · 04/03/2020 12:25

We are supposed to go to Majorca in May and so far only paid 10% deposit. Need to decide by this Friday if we are going or not- as balance is due...

SouthwarkRoad · 04/03/2020 13:08

I wouldn't go. There are more important things than money.

SouthwarkRoad · 04/03/2020 13:11

One fact... China has peaked and it infected a huge... 0.0014% of their population.

Quite, because of the extraordinary measures they took to curb the spread. The government here are doing no such thing, and I would be very surprised if it wasn't already spreading unchecked throughout the UK.

LittleSwede · 04/03/2020 13:17

During yesterday's press conference it was suggested that if you were visiting a country with a less robust (I think this was the word used) healthcare service than the NHS you might want to bring this into consideration when choosing to travel. In case you end up ill when abroad.

So maybe some research around the quality of hospitals in Tenerife is a good idea?

Babdoc · 04/03/2020 13:21

I echo all the PPs saying don't cancel just yet and lose all your money. The travel insurance won’t pay out unless the FO has banned travel to the affected area.
Wait and see how things go. The epidemic may just fizzle out, or peak well before then. Or your family may have all had it and recovered.
I’m booked on a cruise (!) starting in Italy (!!) and visiting 3 other already infected cities in three countries. The thought doesn’t fill me with joy either, OP, but I’m waiting til May to reassess the situation.

Teateaandmoretea · 04/03/2020 13:26

This isn't the place to get talked down about it.

Instead talk to people in real life.

We have a holiday booked at the end of May, I'm assuming I'm going. I don't think I'm any more likely to catch coronavirus on a plane than on the tube/ at the various activities I'd do at home.

Before someone jumps up and says everything in the world will stop, no it won't. If it does we'll be in more trouble because we need the infrastructure to support treatment, medicine, food supply etc. It is older people who are at risk anyway in the main and they will need to be really careful where there are outbreaks while the young people keep things going/ care for the sick.

We will have to be more careful than usual about going out and about while ill. There will be more cases and outbreaks for sure.

It is also bollocks that the Chinese government have done amazingly well - there was a cover up and they pretended nothing was happening for possibly months. Once it was totally out of hand they then closed down whole cities in a desperate attempt to contain it. In the UK otoh thousands of people have been tested and only a handful have tested positive. So it's unlikely it's circulating undetected in the UK. I was baffled by the idea of getting retired doctors and nurses back though as by 60 the risks are higher Hmm

SouthwarkRoad · 04/03/2020 13:28

I don't think I'm any more likely to catch coronavirus on a plane than on the tube/ at the various activities I'd do at home.

It's not really about you catching it, it's about you being quarantined in a hotel room in a foreign country and unable to get home.

Teateaandmoretea · 04/03/2020 13:31

If that happens it happens.

I could have an accident/ other illness on holiday and end up in intensive care. It happened to a friend's daughter a couple of years ago.

You cannot cower through life worrying about everything or if you thought of every outcome you would never go anywhere or do anything.

madroid · 04/03/2020 16:00

Its about doing your bit and what you can to help slow down the spread of the virus to give the NHS a fighting chance to cope with patients who need their help.

That will make a huge difference to survival rates and numbers left with ongoing damage.

Teateaandmoretea · 04/03/2020 16:20

@madroid is your point relevant to the thread?

The economy also needs to be kept going or there won't be any money/ resource to feed people. If no one visits anywhere lots of companies will go out of business, causing long term problems and deaths for other reasons. That attitude is a bit like the approach that was initially taken to foot and mouth that caused chaos in rural Britain. We need common sense not panic. If you are ill or think you may have it self isolate otherwise keep on with your life.

This ridiculous 'go out for any reason and you're selfish' mindset on mumsnet is utterly ridiculous and selfish tbh.

I’ve been here 10 days and things have changed rapidly here in los cris.
Our flight comps turned back in mid air.
Some businesses have been told to close.
Even they don’t know what is going on
So far Easyjet and Ryanair appear to be still flying and tui for some bizarre reason aren’t flying for 48 hours.

On our way to the beach, Zara was shut with a sign saying it was closed for 60 days
Springfield and calzedonia also shut

Some of the beach shops are closing on Monday.
The ticket sellers have gone home early and don’t think they will be back tomorrow. The ragnarok Viking ship has been told it has to come off the water.

Going along to el cine restaurant for a hunk of fish while we still can.

Normally the streets are buzzing as the carnival is on for 13 days but that was cancelled on Thursday night.

Teateaandmoretea · 14/03/2020 19:24

Yeah I think things have changed. I've cancelled mine since fwiw but we were lucky in that we had only paid deposit.

Dowser · 14/03/2020 20:27

Sounds like we are following Spain’s hard line approach and going on lock down on Monday
Only allowed out for supermarket and chemists, then home
Police and or military on streets

All restaurants seem to know they are closing so I can’t see this changing
