AIBU to ask whether you have cancelled or postponed travel/holiday due to Coronavirus

Up until this weekend I was relatively relaxed about Coronavirus. However, I was due to go to Dublin with work this week for a conference and my organization (global business) has temporarily banned attendance at conferences and all non- essential business travel due to Coronavirus.

It has caused me to read up a bit more about it and I am feeling a bit more anxious about it all. I am a chronic asthmatic very prone to chest infections which usually result in one hospital visit a year.

I am meant to be going to Lanzarote with my family including mum, brother, my husband and children for holiday in early April, a little over a month away. I see there is now a confirmed case in Tenerife!

I mentioned to my family that we may need to keep an eye on it and could need to cancel postpone if things escalate. Most thought this was an overreaction. Maybe it is. I wasn’t saying we definitely should but just wanted to put on their radar that we may need to.

Has anyone else postponed travel or holiday plans in light of this virus?

My trip to Singapore has been postponed - it was a work thing and the event has been postponed until march next year.

LonelyBones · 25/02/2020 09:57

If you cancel any flights on a non refundable ticket, dont forget that you can claim the tax back from your ticket. Which means its not a total loss on the cost of your flight ticket.

Saoirse22 · 25/02/2020 10:03

Your concerns are very reasonable! Honestly, I'd cancel the trip right away, the sooner the better as you might have a problem getting your money back if cancelling too close to the date booked.

I have family in Croatia that we're supposed to visit in late spring. Croatia doesn't have any confirmed cases yet, but with Italy being so close, it's merely a matter of time. I'd be 20-something weeks pregnant at the time of the flight and I'm absolutely not willing to risk anything. I'm normally a sickly person and I'd be concerned even if not pregnant! If the epidemic escalates, I'm cancelling the trip.

There are huge concerns in the whole Mediterranean region right now and many fear the whole tourist season will be ruined, there's already plenty of cancellations. And masses of people coming for holidays from all over the world can contribute to a massive epidemic... Just not worth the risk.

No, I just booked work travel last night for April. I work in public health and some of my colleagues are actively working on the wards where the quarantine units are.

So sometimes I’m a bit Hmm about going into the office. But hasn’t put me off travel. I get really good guidance though and I certainly would stop travel if I felt it was necessary or PHE advised us to.

ddl1 · 25/02/2020 10:21

No, but I already tend to restrict winter travel where possible, due to flu season. My mother once caught a really bad flu through plane travel, and it's influenced me. So far, I'm still much more paranoid about plain old flu than the coronavirus, though it may change if there are more cases of the latter nearby.

Right here on Mumsnet i was called neurotic, psycho and all sorts of other things because i too was concerned about flying. People thought it would blow over and now look what's happened. Considering your ailments i wouldn't travel. But im waiting for someone now to say im being unreasonable

duebaby2 · 25/02/2020 13:58

My parents are going to Thailand in 2-3 weeks via Singapore. They are still going ahead unless advised from PHE or WHO. If they cancel now the insurance won't pay out and they'll just loose their money, if in two weeks there announcement about Thailand or Singapore then they can get some money back. They are prepared with all they need to be out there to stay free of the virus but they do have another holiday in mind as a back up that's in the Caribbean just in case

DinaCaliente · 25/02/2020 14:00

@Saoirse22

Croatia now has a confirmed case

There seems to be a distinct ramping up today 😢

Agree there seems to be a ramping up of panic today. We're due to go to Thailand over Easter and while I was fairly OK about it, I am beginning to worry now.

Doobigetta · 25/02/2020 14:49

I think it probably will for a couple of days, and then they’ll have to accept they can’t contain it.

I think one the the government really ought to do is force travel companies to allow cancellations and refunds, and insurance companies to pay out, in the event that people can’t travel because they’v got flu. That will encourage sensible decisions at least.

Watchagotcha · 25/02/2020 15:07

Hmm we are due to fly to Singapore in August to begin a trip that includes Borneo / Sarawak and Indonesia (Lombok)and transiting through KL. At this point, as none of us have any pre-existing conditions, we will only cancel if the government or the airline tells us to.

justasking111 · 25/02/2020 15:17

Think we just have to wait and see, if the whole world gets it then it does not matter where you are. We are last minute bookers impulsive choices so are holding fire at the moment.

Guardsman18 · 25/02/2020 15:19

My DM was on the phone to her cousin last week. Cousin's son, partner and young son were at their home.

He works in Hong Kong and the company have closed for a while so he thought he'd take advantage of having some spare time to come over to the UK.

Thanks mate!

Guardsman18 · 25/02/2020 15:20

Closed due the virus

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 25/02/2020 15:22

I have postponed booking two flights/trips to see family abroad (1 Europe, 1 South Asia). I am lucky as I have no compelling event or date, it is just as and when I get a good fare.

But not even booking in advance just yet.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 25/02/2020 15:25

BTW, I am not especially worried about getting ill myself, I am hale and hearty, but the family I'm visiting less so - older, bit less robust etc. Would feel awful if I glibly brought infection along for the ride.

MaryShelley1818 · 25/02/2020 15:29

I'm booked to go to Poland next weekend, Barcelona a few weeks later, and Holland in May. I'm nowhere near the concerned enough to cancel stage. There are confirmed cases in this country.

amaryl · 25/02/2020 16:01

Having seen the chaos at Tenerife airport over the weekend I’m a bit concerned
Apparently some displaced holidaymakers were put up at that hotel on Sat!!

DartmoorChef · 25/02/2020 16:05

I'm due to fly to lanzarote on 14 March. I really do hope it's not going to get cancelled. I've been looking forward to this as it's our first holiday in two years. 😕

JudgeRindersMinder · 25/02/2020 16:08

I was actually going to be flooding flights to Tenerife today for the end of April, now I don’t know what to do-it’s not being inTenerife that concerns me, we self-cater and won’t be going anywhere where there will be crowds, it’s the airport and flights....

drina27 · 25/02/2020 16:08

Have decided to holiday in the UK instead of Europe this year. Shall not be flying either.

JudgeRindersMinder · 25/02/2020 16:09

I was going to be BOOKING flights, not flooding them🙄
