Booking a cruise and Coronavirus

pettswoodmumof3 · 08/02/2020 18:47

Had made a plan with family to book a cruise together next year. However, do not want to now due to the current news re Coronavirus. Cannot imagine anything worse than being stuck and quarantined on a cruise ship. They think I am overreacting. AIBU? Happy to book another type of holiday but for now, think it would be silly to book onto a cruise/ unless others are happy to lose the deposit/us dropping out last minute - there is a group discount.

If you're really paranoid about corona virus and want a cruise, go with Royal Caribbean as they've banned all Chinese nationals.

That should make you feel a bit better.

cardibach · 08/02/2020 19:16

Next year? Pretty sure there’ll be resolution in this way before then!

Motacilla · 08/02/2020 19:20

I'd be more worried about norovirus on a cruise, it's a risk you need to decide for yourself if you are happy to take though.

Curiosity101 · 08/02/2020 19:23

I don't like cruises because they're a breeding grounds for diseases. Being in such close quarters 24/7 is basically the best way for diseases to spread.

As someone else said I'd be more worried about norovirus, or even bog standard flu. Personally I wouldn't go on a cruise full stop, but if it was something you wanted to do then I certainly wouldn't cancel because of the Coronavirus.

However do get comprehensive travel insurance just incase it gets cancelled for some reason.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/03/2020 05:58

Cruise ships with any reported sickness on board (not just confirmed or suspected Coronavirus) have been refused entry in several Caribbean ports. The itineraries are being severely disrupted and people have been denied access to the port they are supposed to be flying home from.

At the moment the port authorities are panicking, and the cruise companies are playing catch up. It will almost certainly get worse before it gets better.

There will be some great deals to be had but be prepared for things not to go as planned and make sure your insurance is top notch.

Degree in Biochemistry here, not at all paranoid I don’t think?
Weighing things up at the moment I don’t think Id book to go on a cruise this year, unless it’s well into the Autumn.

TheNavigator · 03/03/2020 06:28

Cruise ship met by violent protest

I don't think it will be very nice if you have to disembark and do the tourist thing with police protection because the locals really don't want you there. I think, in general, we should all be attempted to travel more lightly, to consider the environment and show sensitivity to the places we visit. To me, a cruise is the antithesis of this.

Oysterbabe · 03/03/2020 06:38

There's a coronavirus topic now.

Skittlesss · 03/03/2020 06:47

I’m hoping the prices come down a bit once CV has been resolved. Love cruising, but now we can only go in school holidays it’s more expensive.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/03/2020 06:47

I'd be more worried about Norovirus tbh. But then i couldn't think of anything worse than a cruise anyway - it's the antithesis of a decent holiday for me, quarantine with flashing lights . No thankyou

pedanticstyleguide · 03/03/2020 07:28

Cruises are incubators for any illness.

Also horrible for the environment. How about going on a train trip instead.

GinDaddy · 03/03/2020 07:29

FFS

rookiemere · 03/03/2020 07:45

Oh gosh yes I wouldn't even be thinking about booking a cruise at the minute. For one thing if this continues prices are going to go down.

Lweji · 03/03/2020 07:47

By next year it will either have gone quiet or we will all be dead.

Either way, I don't see why you shouldn't book the cruise.

Writersblock2 · 03/03/2020 08:58

We’ve booked for next year. As above, it will have resolved itself one way or another. Besides, booking is usually deposit only.

ShirleyPhallus · 03/03/2020 09:01

Personally I can’t think of anything worse than a cruise. It’s like Diseases On Tour.

Rosalo · 03/03/2020 09:04

I wouldn't be booking a floating Petri dish anytime soon.

No thanks.

MrsT1405 · 03/03/2020 09:05

I love cruises of all types from Cunard to Turkish bullets. Been on about 18. Never been ill. Just do usual hand washing etc.

Ilovefluffysheep · 03/03/2020 09:37

We booked last week to go on a cruise next week, and already have 3 others booked next week. Love cruising! We've got good insurance, what will be will be.

SerenDippitty · 03/03/2020 09:44

Just been on a cruise (one that we booked a year ago). Was fine. Have been on half a dozen cruises over last 20 years none had norovirus or anything else.

PotholeParadise · 03/03/2020 09:47

We booked last week to go on a cruise next week, and already have 3 others booked next week. Love cruising! We've got good insurance, what will be will be.

What, 4 cruises all in the same week? How? Do you have a TARDIS?

ExtraOnions · 03/03/2020 09:49

I love cruising ... Easter ones are one cheap as chips, so we are booking a week. Also booking 2 weeks over summer

Comps83 · 03/03/2020 09:56

I wouldn't book it
I know you said next year but I think a lot of travel companies are going to go under after this and I'd be worried about losing the money

RoseAndRose · 03/03/2020 10:18

I think coronavirus is just showing up how germy cruise ships are. Floating petrie dish is a good description!

If you want to go, then choose a small ship - perhaps one of those Norwegian river cruises which are advertised all the time on daytime telly?

onalongsabbatical · 03/03/2020 11:11

Diseases On Tour Sounds lovely! Grin I agree.
