Saudi Airport - attack or terror?

Again I think the BBC should go for terrorist attack here as an airport is civilian. A military airport would be an attack but targeting civilian infrastructure with the intent to kill indiscriminately is just terror.

Smoke rises from a building as people standing near parked cars watch.

Twelve killed in attack on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport

Another 309 people are injured, with the Saudi-led coalition saying the attack by Yemen's Houthis is "war crime".

For info see my previous upthread about some airports in the region (and TBF around the world) having a military side.

I think Sanaa Airport might be one such.

Very likely.

And for reference

As said, the incompetent Saudis FAFO. For a decade, they have not done anything to get the Houthi's to back down. If anything, the Houthi resolve is stronger.

Bringing down the "House of Saud" is no bad thing. The US and the world should bomb the Saudi's and bring democracy there too.

I do not disagree with the first bit. I do disagree with the 2nd bit ( I am anti war). The third bit would be good.

And just to bring another factor in, and I think your post opens it up, is this -

UK military support to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

I disagree with this. Not in terms of being against the Houthi ( because nobody actually likes them, I think not even Iran), but because why support Saudi Arabia, when they should actually be supporting the Yemeni Government. This is classic mission creep, and war escalation.

This is a civil war in Yemen. The Houthi (tribe) against the Yemen Government. These folk. And the Houthi are a really odd fundie religious crowd ( Maybe cult ?)

Government (yemenembassynl.org)

This is who Saudi Arabia entered the way over a decade ago to support. Saudi Arabia are an external actor in a civil war. But for some reason, the actual Yemen Government, and it's leader, H.E. Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, are never mentioned.

That is who the international community should be supporting against the Houthi. But for some reason, they are siding with an absolute Monarch of an authoritarian theocratic state, Mohammed bin Salman (insert emotive' "Mr Bonesaw"), rather than the recognized government of Yemen.

This H.E. Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi, the actual leader of Yemen, must be really bad that people prefer Mr Bonesaw.

Perhaps he is a socialist? No Idea.

UK military support to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

The UK will provide additional defensive military support to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia following renewed Houthi attacks and escalating violence in the region.

The irony of course with Saudis and all Fake-Royals in the GCC is that there is NO concept of "royalty" in either Sunni or Shia Islam.....

The Wahabis of Saud have a LOT to answer for.

Saudi's gave the world 9/11, AQ, ISIS, Brotherhood and all suicide bombings in mosques. I struggled to find a comparative event where a Shia was a suicide bomber in a Sunni mosque in modern times....

As said, Saudi's FAFO - I have zero sympathy for what they do or stand for.

As I understand it, the Houthis are a tribe not an ideology. They’re basically warlords.
They follow the local form of Islam, Zaydi Islam which Wikipedia tells me is Shia but with a number of the features of Sunni Islam (sorry no idea)
In short, they seem more like the Italian mafia: deeply religious but motivated by organised crime rather than ideology.

Yup. So far as I can work out, they are a fundie religious cult. But everyone seems to be saying "terrorists". And fair enough, but loads of people are lumping them in with all the other Islamic groups. To me they are more like the Taiping crowd of the mid 1800s in China. Where a fella called Hong Xiuquan claimed to be the brother of Jesus. And nobody, except his followers, agreed.

And as I said, I can't work out why nobody in "the West", is supporting the actual Yemen Government.

Maybe lessons from history? The Taiping rebellion cost an estimated 20 million dead. And here is the thing I think. A cult such as this can only be dealt with by eradication, or re-education. Both of which are abhorrent these days (correctly IMO).

So hedge the bets on Mr Bonesaw ? That he will somehow manage to deal with it without eradication or re-education camps?

I suspect that the Yemeni Government favour either or both of the bad options ?

I agree about the Yemeni government - but I’ve no idea why. I know very little about them but it’s hard to think that they’re significantly worse than many of the other governments in the region, as you point out. Or than the Houthis.

There’s an interesting article about then here:

How the Houthis Are Winning the Yemeni Civil War

By Matthew ParishMonday 21 September 2026There is something profoundly strange about the Yemeni Civil War. One of the poorest countries on earth has been the scene of one of the most technologically uneven wars of the twenty-first century. Saudi Arabia...

There is more democracy in Saudi Arabia than there is in your proto-fascist country Yankee.

LOL

Wahabi Arabia has ZERO democracy. Zero political parties, no elections - nothing. No women in leadership at the helm of Government either.

They persecute women just as bad as the Police in the UK do. Worse, maybe.

Also, my reference to the US democracy was tongue in cheek.👍

It sound like terrorism since the countries aren't at war and The Houthis do not govern Yeman as a whole, just a piece of it, but have grown in power over the years, killing many along the way.

Fighting has recently escalated between Yemen's Saudi-backed government forces and the Houthis, who are backed by Iran and control most of the country. Again we see Iran involved - they back several terrorist groups, Hamas, The Houthis, Hezbollah, to name a few. They do appear to be behind attacks in various different countries and we have seen some in the west defend or support them - therrefore one would assume they support killing of individuals at an airport without any millitary activity in a country not at war. Interesting times.

Ihatetomatoes · 12/10/2026 11:16

If feels like some countries in the Middle East want to leave behind war and conflict but some other countries want to drag them into every ongoing conflict/war/terror. It doesn't appear that safety, secuity and a better life for people is important to some. There seems to be little effort at resolving disputes and a huge number that want to keep the religious groups/tribes/countries/ in an ongoing kill cycle. Imagine what they could be if they all resolved to work together for the betterment of all.

Being backed by Iran doesnt mean the Houthi's do their bidding.

That much is evident in recent weeks. The Houthi's are doing what they think is in their best interest.

Also, as I posted above, the Wahabis of Arabia have given far more to terror groups than Iran ever has.

Saudi's gave the world 9/11, AQ, ISIS, Brotherhood and all suicide bombings in Shia mosques the world over, support to Hamas, IJ, Syria's crooked new leader and so much more, including IS and AQ-inspired attacks across Europe. High time the Saudi regime was taken out and democracy and freedom brought to them so women can also be free.

Probably because of the oil.
