To me the Iranoan women s football team not raining their anthem was a silent demonstration against the regime in Iran. Iran state media has described them as traiitors so you don't need to speculate on their fate of they return to Iran.

We know what Iran does to "traitors". Maybe they can seek asylum? If they want it.

allmycats · 09/03/2026 09:44

They are truly buggered - go home and suffer the consequences or stay and their families suffer.

Iranian women's football team signal 'SOS' from bus after match in Australia amid fears for their safety

Iranian footballers reportedly flashed the international SOS signal from their team bus amid fears over their safety as they return to Iran after crashing out of the Asian Cup.

Hundreds of supporters surrounded the Iranian Lionesses' coach as it left the stadium on the Gold Coast in Australia on Sunday evening, with chants of "save our girls".

Some supporters carried the Lion and Sun flag, which predates the 1979 Islamic Revolution and is used today as a symbol of resistance against the current Iranian regime.

At least one Iranian player was seen performing the international SOS distress signal from inside the team bus, tucking her thumb into her palm and folding her fingers down over it.

Australia has granted asylum to five players in Irans visiting football team over fears they faced persecution if they returned home.

Australia’s home affairs minister Tony Burke told reporters “they are welcome to stay in Australia, and they are safe here, and should feel at home here”.

Hotcrossed · 11/03/2026 05:40

one of them has changed her mind and is returning home

Twiglets1 · 11/03/2026 06:54

Seven had been promised they would be able to stay permanently here - but then on Wednesday, one woman changed her mind.

"In Australia people are able to change their mind. We respect the context in which she had made that decision," Immigration Minister Tony Burke told parliament on Wednesday.

Yes Australia can hardly hold them captive if they want to return home.

PrunellaModularis · 11/03/2026 07:04

Were they brave or foolish? Surely they knew the consequences for themselves and their families?

I imagine it's an incredibly hard decision for them. They will be worried about repercussions for their families if they don't return or their own lives if they do.

I think they were very brave, just like the thousands of people who protested in the streets of Iran.

Agree. If they are changing their minds it’s probably worth considering what is being threatened to get them to do so.

Re the ‘foolish’ post below, how damning. How can women draw attention to their horrendous situation?

Very brave. They are attempting to tell the world how they feel about the regime in their country.

Seems like more of them have been coerced into returning to Iran. Awful.

Horrendous. Can you imagine what was threatened to get that outcome and then what will happen when they return. Not much on this on the threads, just generally.

Twiglets1 · 16/03/2026 10:43

Really do fear for the safety of those that returned to Iran.

PrunellaModularis · 16/03/2026 18:15

If you're referring to my question, it wasn't in the least bit damning. Their protest was sadly futile - we know how barbaric the regime is. Now they and their families must face the conequences of their silent protest.

We don't know what their families want for them, i know what I'd want, and what I'd sacrifice for my daughter.

Such a horrible position for them and their families to be in.

PrunellaModularis · 16/03/2026 18:23

Easy for you to say from the comfort of your place in a liberal democracy!

But that’s true when you say they were foolish.

But the same could be said for you wondering if their protest was foolish.
Easy to call it foolish from the comfort of a liberal democracy.

PrunellaModularis · 16/03/2026 21:03

So tell me what have they achieved?

Twiglets1 · 16/03/2026 21:20

PrunellaModularis · 16/03/2026 21:03

So tell me what have they achieved?

Publicly for a cause they feel incredibly strongly about.

Perhaps they want the world to know how strongly they feel.
