I wonder what people's opinions on whether the talks between the US and Iran will ultimately lead to steikes?

Personally I think they will as surely the US negotiators aren't going to settle on an agreement that simply involved nuclear enrichment as a lot of the facilities are already destroyed and I think the regime will happily abandon the enrichment scheme to save them selves.

I think the US must have the Iranian ballistic missile arsenal in their sites in negotiations and to see these removed will mean Iran being completely defanged as a military force as well as being a huge humiliation. To my mind this is a bridge to far for Iran.

At tone level it's a win win for the free world as either Iran is brought down as a military power in the region through negotiation or force. It's up to them to choose.

This is one area where I do wish the US would intervene and support the people of Iran for freedom from the horrific Islamic regime.
Work jointly with Israel and get it done.

dairydebris · 08/02/2026 08:03

Any intervention from the Big and Little Satans will go down like an absolute lead balloon with a significant portion of Iranian society, and will legitimize the current regimes complaints of foreign intervention on sovereign soil.
I sincerely hope Iranians can get this done without any intervention.

I would like Iranians to be able to overthrow their horrible regime without foreign intervention.

Not sure it’s possible though. Honestly, I’m feeling conflicted about whether the US should escalate things or not, assuming the talks prove unsuccessful.

Like @mids2019 I’m interested in others opinions.

I'm conflicted too. Ultimately I dont know enough to say what's right and what's wrong. I do think foreign intervention will delegitimize any new government- that obviously wouldn't be good for future stability.
I'm very much in favour of Iran never getting a nuclear weapon though. Just not convinced on intervention for regime change.

Following the thread to listen to those who know more than me!

Exactly @dairydebris I’m also following to hear from people who know more about the situation in Iran than me.

And definitely feel that Iran should never get nuclear weapons. Don’t care if anyone thinks that is “unfair.”

Here’s an expert opinion from Chatham House.

It will cause massive instability for the region including Israel (and world energy markets) if U.S. strikes and if Iranian regime feel they have nothing to lose.

notimagain · 08/02/2026 09:51

I think that article sums things up very well.

If the US act Iran will respond as best it can with amongst other things it's missile arsenal (plus possibly long range drones) and even though the assumption is those will be conventially armed they have the potential to cause serious problems for some neighbouring states.

That's the reason why a lot of the visible build up of US forces in the region as been as much about Air defence, in the form of guided missile destroyers and SAM batteries, as it has been about offensive systems.

I have no idea how this will unfold but I do know it's difficult to hold systems and personnel on a high state of readiness for weeks on end.

Sobering read, thankyou.
I think Trump is the most dangerous man in the world. I can't believe any nation would negotiate with him with any kind of trust at all.
I also don't believe he gives one single shiny shit about any protesters in Iran etc, every single thing he does will be in service of what he believes is best for his America. Interesting times.

Islandsofsand · 08/02/2026 17:04

Trump was driven to respond to what was happening to the protesters in Iran, but I don’t think that’s why he is building up the “armada” in the region at present, as the protests have been quashed.

Trump is due to meet Netanyahu, who clearly is not a dove!

Netanyahu may feel there is much to gain and not much to lose for Israel?

Lets hope level heads prevail.
