Conflict in the Middle East

Again why the BBC still has a Israel Gaza War sub section on its web site when so much else is now happening in the world?

The action by Trump in Venezula is major world news with commentators agreeing that the action signals major shifts in the means of geopolitics and the actions of states yet there will be no bespoke section of the BBC website for this.

We must be at a point with the extended cease fire into 2026 that we have to question the BBCs editorial policy of having a distinct section on a war which is now in a ceasefire and at some point will be permanently ended (if not so now)

The danger is that we have the BBC as said before with space to fill in its website in this section which effectively becomes a biased campaigning vehicle for one side....the Palestinians.

Because some people still care about Palestinians, 400 of them have been killed since the ceasefire.

Newsworthy events are still occurring like Israel’s recent banning, in an unprecedented manner, of respecteded NGOs such as MSF from operating in Gaza. See below statement from 7 European leaders (Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Slovenia and Spain )they think this event is concerning enough to issue a statement

“In the joint statement, the seven European nations ( said the measures “undermine the UN mandate, violate international law and run counter to the findings of the International Court of Justice, while risking grave humanitarian consequences for the Palestinian civilian population and refugees.”

Why don’t you email the BBC and take it up with them if it’s bothering you this much.

People are barely talking about Venezuela OP, and they really should be. Look at how few threads there are on here about it, and how short those threads are. But start something about a country that already finished sorting out terrorism inside its own borders last year, and loads of people will jump on you. Just watch... It makes me really cynical about who is posting and why.

If you only consult Mn on current affairs, I'd suggest you expand your reading.

What? Lots of people are talking about Venezuela. It’s too news story everywhere or was until it started to snow ❄️

This!

KoalaKoKo · 06/01/2026 16:27

Absolutely everyone I know is talking about Venezuela, it is all over the news and all over social media.

What you don't see all over the news is that children are still being killed by the IDF in Gaza despite this "ceasefire". Maybe when complaining about BBC coverage you could also ask why they are not covering the multiple breaches of the ceasefire by the IDF including murdering a 14 year old boy yesterday!

There are many protestors being killed in Iran and while the BBC is highlighting this it doesn't have its own new section where there is the faint but desirable hope for revoution. We naturally question why there is this perceived obsession with Gaza when there are other major events occurring around the world which in my opinion is rapidly changing.

I hope the focus on the only Jewish state in the world isn't motivated by an institutional anti somitism.......that is all.

Venezuela is huge news I agree.

Doesn't mean Gaza shouldn't still be big news too, an attempted genocide doesn't stop being news just because other things are also happening. They can both be reported on.

IfWhippetsRuledTheWorld · 06/01/2026 22:06

obsession with Gaza

Wow.

Maybe because of the disproportionate number of child amputees and dead children compared with any other conflict in the world.

Perhaps the way the victims are trapped into a small area by the aggressors and shot at like fish in a barrel.

Perhaps it is because we see video footage of ambulances being attacked, fishermen being attacked, journalists being attacked, doctors being attacked, children being attacked. Perhaps because recording exist of a child begging for someone to save her as she is shot at hundreds of times. Perhaps because we are hearing of more and more medical personnel dying in Israeli custody with at least one raped to death. Perhaps because IDF soldiers have gone on record to say civilians are being targeted and they can just say Hamas to get away with it.

Perhaps because this has been going on for 80 years and continues to go on and people are finally waking up to see what has been happening to these poor people and the inherent racism that exists within the IDF.

Where is the Iran revolt tab BBC....is it not that important when it doesn't involve Israel 🤔

OP posts:
Twiglets1 · 13/01/2026 09:41

The BBCs "world news" section is nearly all articles about Iran now.

Norway-based group Iran Human Rights reported yesterday that at least 648 protesters had been killed in the recent unrest while also noting that unverified reports could raise the death toll to more than 6,000. The Iranian protestors have no weapons or anyone to defend them so God knows how high the body count could grow.

Still no Iran tab though ... strange.

You have to conclude that Iranian lives seem less important to the BBC. Or maybe it's because it isn't Israel the Iranians are fighting but their own leaders.

In Gaza reported on today,

At least four displaced Palestinians killed when strong winds caused walls to collapse onto their tents and a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia

Strong winter winds collapsed walls onto flimsy tents for Palestinians displaced by war in Gaza, killing at least four people, as dangerous living conditions persist after more than two years of devastating Israeli bombardment and aid shortfalls.

A ceasefire has been in effect since October, but aid groups say that Palestinians broadly lack the shelter necessary to withstand frequent winter storms.

The dead include two women, a girl and a man, officials at the Shifa hospital, Gaza City’s largest, which received the bodies, said on Tuesday.

The Gaza health ministry said on Tuesday that a one-year-old boy died of hypothermia overnight.

GiantBranch · 14/01/2026 11:19

Also reported today

James Elder, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, said on Tuesday that at least 100 children under the age of 18 – 60 boys and 40 girls – had been killed since the truce began due to military operations, including drone strikes, airstrikes, tank shelling and use of live ammunition.
Those figures, he said, reflected incidents where enough details had been compiled to warrant recording, but the total toll is expected to be higher.

He said hundreds of children had been wounded.

PollyPlumPeach · 14/01/2026 11:22

Over 100 children have been killed by Israel since the "ceasefire". That's still newsworthy, regardless of whether you think Palestinian children's lives don't matter.

FairPearlSnake · 31/01/2026 09:31

It doesn’t any more. Now the horrors of what Israel are on the main page. Does that make you happier?

HaMoked.
"Beyond that our objection is that the law is racially designed, meant to apply only to Palestinians, never to Jews, only to people who kill Israeli citizens, never for example to Israeli citizens who kill Palestinians. The motivation is clear."

I am glad the tab has been taken in the wake of the Iran crisis as news has to have a broad focus on world events which move on. There are other regions of the middle East that are experiencing tensions, not least Iran, but including Syria and Yemen which deserve equal coverage.

OP posts:
Bringemout · 01/02/2026 05:09

The 100 kids killed, any information on how? Because unicef said by hypothermia and strikes, if some children have died of medical conditions then thats not “killed”. This is a genuine question because there is hardly any information about what exactly the cause of mortality is. Because after the “14’000 children will die of malnutrition in 48 hours”. statement from the UN I’m a bit hmm about any numbers coming out. If anyone has any of the actual recorded figures please post them. This is a genuine post, I’m trying to understand exactly what has happened since the ceasefire.

I agree.

Jeremy Bowen crying into his cornflakes but there’s a lot going on in the world right now beyond Gaza, particularly with regard to the catastrophic situation in Iran.

mids2019 · 01/02/2026 08:08

The true death toll in Iran may never be known and more and more heart breaking news stories are emerging. It would simply be crass and revealing of a deep level bias if the BBC kept up the Gaza war sub section especially as news from this area is just one part of the emerging news cycle from the ever turbulent middle east. Good call BBC.....you've been listening to MN!
