Multiple countries reject Hamas request for sanctuary abroad

Hamas seeks asylum abroad for gunmen trapped in Rafah tunnels; request rejected by multiple countries

Over the past week, Hamas has reached out to several countries seeking asylum for 100-200 of its fighters trapped in tunnels beneath Rafah in an IDF area of Gaza, but all the requests were rejected, Channel 12 reports, citing Israeli officials.

The countries reportedly approached included Turkey and several unspecified African nations. According to the report, the requests were made with Israel’s knowledge.

Under the 20-point peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump and endorsed by Israel, Hamas is required to disarm and relinquish control of the Gaza Strip. While the plan includes a mechanism for safe passage out of Gaza for operatives who opt to depart, no country so far has signalled willingness to receive them.

No one wanted to give sanctuary to a load of vicious, murderous terrorists? Colour me shocked 😒

Good on the African nations rejecting them. The last thing they need.

I guess it is a flaw to the peace plan - which country in their right mind would want to give sanctuary to Hamas operatives?

Though the BBC still can’t bring itself to use the word “terrorist” and some on MN act as though Hamas don’t need to be blamed for starting this war, the reality is no country wants them anywhere near their civilians.

I agree @SharonEllis about the African nations - hope they can hold out against taking any.

But, but, but..... they are freedom fighters aren't they ....(as per posters on these boards). Guess no one wants 'freedom fighters ' who rape, torture, kidnap and murder. Who have thought!

They're freedom fighters until they are coming to a town near you...

Israel reportedly conveyed a proposal to Hamas last week that allowed the release of the Hamas fighters trapped in these Rafah tunnels on condition that they surrender. They have been in the tunnels for weeks now.

According to the report on Channel 12, which cited an Israeli official, Israel sent the proposal to senior Hamas officials through mediating countries. Under the proposal, the remaining fighters in the area would be permitted to emerge if they surrender and agree to be transferred to Israeli prisons.

They would later be eligible for release and relocation to the Hamas-controlled area of the Gaza Strip, on the condition that they pledge not to return to terrorism and agree to disarm. As of the beginning of the ceasefire on October 10, Israel controls the eastern half of Gaza, while the western half is under Hamas control.

Since the proposal was made, the operatives have not surrendered and have on multiple occasions emerged from tunnels in attempts to flee or attack IDF forces. Channel 12 noted that it is unclear whether Hamas leaders can even communicate with the trapped fighters.

“We gave the terrorists in Rafah the option to live and to leave the tunnels,” an Israeli official told Channel 12. “So far, they have not agreed to meet the conditions we set. It appears they have decided to become martyrs.”

It's almost like opposing the actions of the Israeli government doesn't equate to support for Hamas.

Yeah obviously, who says otherwise?

I expect that is the case for most people who criticise the actions of the Israeli government.

Not everyone though - Hamas have their supporters in the West.

Case in point - the NHS employed Dr Rahmeh Aladwan (currently suspended) who said on X: “I don’t condemn Hamas. I don’t condemn October 7. I don’t condemn armed resistance to occupation. I condemn the state of Israel.”

She has actually only been suspended at the present time for 15 months.

Though it is likely that she will be facing a misconduct hearing in the future.
