Why did Hamas promise to return the hostages when it knew it couldn't?

What did they think would happen once it became clear?

Are they expecting Israel to dig out their dead?

Are there any Palestinian prisoners still to be released?

I'm really worried it's all going to blow up again 😕

I think they did say it beforehand that it would be a difficult task.

I think it's possible that Hamas tell lies 🤔

I mean they rape, torture, murder, kidnap, rape and shoot in head at same time, praising Allah whilst doing so, film for all to see, delight in sharing, remove uniforms and hide away when soldiers around, drive bodies around on trucks so Palestinians can cheer and spit at bodies, .....

so I imagine lying comes easy.

ExpertInAbsolutelyZero · 16/10/2025 09:30

Because that’s how they operate. Terrorists. Never believe a word they utter.

Sadcafe · 16/10/2025 09:35

Would Israel have agreed to the ceasefire if they’d said we won’t return all the bodies, probably not

CrossChecking · 16/10/2025 10:34

Everyone knew before hand that they couldn't retrieve all of the bodies. You find news articles from before the ceasefire saying as much. I don't know what kind of weird propaganda it is to try and gaslight people into thinking that this wasn't the case but it was. Israel were fully aware of the situation and agreed to the ceasefire anyway.

israelilefty · 16/10/2025 11:01

At the ceasefire deal negotiations, Hamas stated that (according to reports) they did not know the location of 9 of the bodies. The deal has a clause in it whereby an international team, informed by Israeli intelligence, will seek to retrieve the bodies Hamas doesn't find. The issue now is not that they couldn't find some of the bodies (this was expected) but that they were expected to return a larger number of bodies, and without the current delays.

Beachtastic · 16/10/2025 11:02

I know this sounds rough, but I just really hope that the "dead" hostages are actually dead, and Hamas are not playing sadistic psychological tricks behind the scenes.

All of the remaining hostages are known to be deceased, in many cases their bodies were taken hostage when they had already been killed on Oct 7. Their deaths have been announced by the military rabbinate, based on credible evidence (intelligence; findings in the field, and in some cases intelligence provided by returned hostages). The only two whose fate was uncertain (they were listed as "serious concern for their wellbeing) were Tamir Nimrodi and Bipin Joshi, and both of their bodies have, sadly, been returned to Israel.

NotrialNodeal · 16/10/2025 11:13

I know it shouldn't but I really am surprised by anyone who actually thought that promises could be made, delivered on and eternal peace would ensue.

indoorplantqueen · 16/10/2025 11:17

Equally why did Isreal think that hamas would be able to recover the bodies when most of Gaza is flattened?
it’s good that external people and equipment is being brought in to assist in finding the bodies.

Alittlefeedbackwouldbenice · 16/10/2025 11:43
  1. They didn't say they could, only the ones in their possession. The peace agreement contains provisions for searching for bodies with International cooperation for this, in anticipation that not all bodies would be found and returned.

  2. yes, Israel holds many bodies of Palestinians. Including children. The exact number is unknown, estimates range from a few hundred to more than a thousand. These include individuals that have 'dies' whilst in Israeli prisons.

  3. Israel still hold many thousands of Palestinians without charge or conviction, under administrative detention. These people are legally innocent. Interviews with individuals post release, examinations and research over the last 20 years has shown widespread concern about physical violence, torture and mistreatment of these innocent detainees.

Don’t give up yet, I hope it can hold.

Thank you for the reassurance; this was just a horrid thought that crept into my mind the other night and has worried me a bit ever since.

I'm sorry if it sounds wrong, but I can't think of another situation where I have ever felt relief to know that someone is dead, rather than the potential alternatives.

Well... I think I expected it to last more than a couple of days!

Interesting... Can you explain why Israel has been bombing Gaza?

surreygirly · 17/10/2025 13:46

Because they hate jews

Because there are tunnels under Gaza. That’s where theyve been hiding. Well apart from the really important ones who are in luxury hotels of Qatar. It’s not rocket science. Lots of tunnels. Paid for by the billions in aid given to Gaza by western countries. This aid was supposed to help the Palestinians have a better life. Not be spent on terrorists and tunnels.

This. Anyone who has seen footage of the destruction in Gaza must surely have understood this?

Alittlefeedbackwouldbenice · 17/10/2025 14:02

Interestingly there's a team of 81 body retrieval experts from Turkey who are waiting to be allowed into Gaza to help with finding the bodies. Israel are refusing to allow them in to help.

Surely international journalists should also be allowed in now, too.

NuffSaidSam · 17/10/2025 14:08

Why did Israel ask them to when they must have also known it was an impossible task?

I hope they can be found and returned home.

HoppingPavlova · 17/10/2025 14:09

They didn't say they could, only the ones in their possession

This is the bit I am very confused about. My read of what they agreed to was that they were handing over the number they knew about AND had (accessible) in their possession, and that as part of the agreement it was acknowledged there were more hostage bodies currently listed/inaccessible to them. But then to honour the agreement they didn’t seem to be able to come up with the number they said they had accessible in their possession?
